New Supervisor, question about calling people in (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ilikepie740
Tonight was my first official shift "in charge". It was only me and one other person... Also we just so happen to be right next to the local convention center, where there was some sort of rodeo event going on. It was pretty crazy all day but we managed to do just fine with two people. Eventually mall security comes by our kiosk and informs us that we had a surprise delivery just sitting outside the storeroom the floor above us. This is where we both realized that we had an issue. The barista was trained to take deliveries...I am an external hire supervisor who has not yet been trained on how to handle deliveries. And with the crowd we had at the time neither of us felt comfortable leaving the other alone on bar while the other one was putting the stuff away. So for the last hour and a half I called another barista in so we could get everything handled and all get out on time.

My question is will I get a "coaching" when I work next because of the current crunch on hours? My logic behind my decision was we had a surprise delivery just left outside our storeroom. Neither of us knew that it was even there until mall security came by and informed us that it was sitting there. Rather than risk having what was there jacked + us staying there way past closing time to get everything in order for tomorrow's openers I chose to call in someone who lived up the street for an hour and a half.

I’ve never worked a mall kiosk and I have a feeling you’re licensed? But I work at a corporate cafe location, I’ve called people in before when the schedule has been wonky or we get crazy busy for random things (school events, for example) and I’ve never had a problem before. As long as you have a valid reason I don’t see why not. It all depends on how understanding your manager is. I know If I did that with my old manager she’d understand, my new one would not. Sorry if that doesn’t help but that’s my view on it. I’d just be honest and explain

I'm also a new shift, but I feel as though you handled it fine. You needed the help and it wasn't like it was a full shift or anything.

Next time, just call the SM and ask. Better to ask than assume. If you don’t hear back, than I would just make the best decision. Always best to do and ask for forgiveness later.

Probably best to contact your SM for approval but otherwise I don’t think it’s an issue

With the current labor crunch probably. Shifts are not allowed to add coverage or keep partners later without SM approval right now.
