Does your store let you wear gloves? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kittybear_
I know this may be silly to some of you…but I really want to have painted nails while working at Starbucks- not even acrylics. I’m willing to bring my own latex gloves and switch them out whenever needed. I understand why Starbucks/health dept. doesn’t want their employees to have their nails painted (although it’s interesting almost every other restaurant you can have them painted). I feel like it depends on the SM but I would love your guys’ input and wonder if some of y’all can pull this off at your store.

If I’m willing to bring my own and switch them out I don’t think there’s a good reason to not let me do this. I enjoy Starbucks and don’t want another job as I’ve already worked many other places and Starbucks is where I want to be.

You probably won't be allowed to wear latex gloves. Some people are allergic to latex. Even other gloves, like nitrile gloves, have some form of rubber that is used. If you can bring your own gloves, I would suggest nitrile gloves that are specifically food safe.

My former store wouldn't allow this type of thing, but some stores seem to be more relaxed than others. Our store had the clear food prep gloves.

Good point about the latex. Yeah I’d be down to do food safe gloves. Thanks for the comment!

There’s no way you could do that and be on bar. There’s not enough time to make that nonsense work.

When I have cuts on my hands I wear gloves on bar and have no problem
Comfortable-Plane944 1 points 1y ago
Lol that’s different than putting on gloves for every new drink you have to make

It’s actually a food safety law that food handlers/prep cannot have anything on their nails. Also why we can’t wear rings (other than a solid wedding band,) or watches or bracelets. Servers/bussers in restaurants can wear polish and jewelry bc they aren’t preparing food. It sucks. I’ve been in food for 20 years. Have had nice nails three times…and had to remove the polish before I went back to work. As for gloves, they don’t allow it because food safety regulations require gloves be changed between tasks. So you’d have to change gloves every single time you prep a new order or drink.

Ah ok. This makes sense! I appreciate the clarification! Right it sucks cause I tend to like food service jobs but I guess that’s the price we pay😭 thank you!

It’s actually on the dress code that says you can’t wear gloves to hide nails or tattoos.
kittybear_ [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Huh didn’t know that good to know!
the1noir 2 points 1y ago
It says it’s because of “Due to hand-washing requirements” that they don’t let us use gloves for long periods of time. Which makes me wonder what the policy for gloves were when Covid was taken more seriously.
kittybear_ [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah that’s interesting! I also wasn’t there when Covid was more in its peak

Starbucks has changed so much in the past two years it’s insane. Things we don’t do anymore, new things we do now. It’s actually kinda insane

if you’re on bar , you’re gonna have to switch them off and wash your hands for every drink . it would be a hassle js

if anything , get some press on nails
kittybear_ [OP] 3 points 1y ago
See this is where I’m confused. If we don’t wash our hands after every drink we make, why would we need to change our gloves?

Also, we can wear press on nails?? Cause wow I’m super happy if that’s the case. I mean they couldn’t be long I imagine but even if short I’ll take it
throwaway2825272 3 points 1y ago
i do for every few drinks . i’m weird about syrups or milk / anything else touching my hands . technically from my understanding we’re suppose to wash our hands every 30 minutes . my store has a timer .

and for the press on nails situation , im suggesting it because you can technically take them off , thus take them off during your shift and put them back on after .

the only reason i’ve seen why you gotta wash your hands between drinks when wearing gloves is cross contamination . but , i think they’re saying that so you don’t get your nails done lol . but as another commentator said , you won’t be put on bar .
kittybear_ [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Ohhh I see gotcha. That makes sense. Yeah lol true though😂 nobody wants people to go to the extent just to have their nails done. Well fair enough! Thanks for your reply!

We have boxes of gloves ready for partners to use always. Mainly because its policy to wear a glove if you have an open cut/bandaid. Painted nails would be another valid reason within policy.

Servers and bussers don’t prepare food is why. When I worked at Nothing Bundt Cakes a while back, we could have nails while working as Guest Services, but not as the cake decorators. I also couldn’t have them while working at a cafe where I had to prepare crepes. It’s a rule across the board it’s just some places don’t enforce it (which is a red flag for me) or the position doesn’t require it.

I miss getting my nails done too lol.
kittybear_ [OP] 2 points 1y ago
That definitely makes more sense. I guess I didn’t understand the role of preparing vs serving. I admit that I feel better as a customer knowing there isn’t going to be nail polish in things I eat/drink, it’s just a sad reality as a worker to not be able to paint nails. At least we are all suffering together😭 haha

Before I started Starbucks I began doing my own gel nails and really enjoyed it. It makes me feel like I have my life together, and a little of a destresser when I do them
goddessofwaterpolo 1 points 1y ago
Right, like I would hate getting a nail or nail polish in my food or drink, and also look at it like- especially acrylics, they could potentially break and cause injury if they get hit on the machines or anything else. I often hit my hands or squish my fingers enough, I don’t need to risk breaking nails too lolol

Other restaurants do not allow it. People who work there simply get away with it.

It's a huge waste of time to be putting on and taking off gloves and washing your hands constantly. Within the first day I'm sure your SSV/SM will be over it and tell you to undo your nails.

It's just not worth it.
kittybear_ [OP] -1 points 1y ago
Hm. Where I’m from I’ve worked at multiple restaurants and it’s allowed and even when health department came in they never said anything. Maybe it’s just the area I live in.

It’s true it could be a hassle. I imagined doing it about as often as one person washes their hands which isn’t too bad but I get that
