I agree that what Russia is doing is disgusting and awful, but think about the workers here. If they don’t work, they won’t be paid, it’s not just about Starbucks making money
KJ2998SJ107 points1y ago
I agree. I get we want to punch back at Putin, but this isn't they way to do it. Shutting down Netflix, Starbucks, whatever else, it's only going to make the Russian population more miserable, and the vast majority of them haven't done anything to deserve it. They're already living under a miserable leader. Punishing civilians isn't going to do anything beneficial.
nicknenashev-55 points1y ago
They should feel more miserable. Because of their political inaction, they were forced into a dictatorship and now the ciliclized world is suffering. We can’t remove Putin from the outside. Therefore, drastically decreasing the quality of life for an average russian, switching their attention from the propaganda on TV to their fridge is the quickest way to encourage change.
KJ2998SJ35 points1y ago
"they were forced into a dictatorship" you just said it yourself. As a person living under democratic government, I have no idea what it's like to be governed by a ruthless dictator, and I'm guessing you don't either. They're already miserable under Putin, the rest of the world trying to make them more miserable isn't going to encourage change it's just going to increase suffering.
SunBusiness82917 points1y ago
It isn't possible to employ sanctions AND not hurt the general population. Sanctions will hurt the working man. It is intended to cripple their economy and cause them to rise up against their dictator. There's no nice way to do it. Starbucks in Russia should close, along with those who already have: VISA, Mastercard, Amex, Apple, Samsung, Nike and many, many, many more. Ask the Ukranian mother grieving over the body of her 16 month old. This war is a crime.
nicknenashev1 points1y ago
I actually do. My whole family is from Russia and I was born in Ukraine. People are quick to downvote without understanding the seriousness of this political situation. Those people should be suffering right now no matter how harsh it sounds. That’s the only way to stop this war.
pervasivebarrier8 points1y ago
holy shit. least sociopathic/most empathetic liberal
terriblescreenwriter8 points1y ago
Wow. What an ignorant thing to say “they were forced into a dictatorship”. Do you honestly think Putin cares? Look at Kim jong il who let half the population starve while he sipped twenty thousand dollar whiskey. You’re literally an example of tell me you know nothing about dictatorships without telling me
cookiemonstah870 points1y ago
What is ciliclized?
Bryancreates4 points1y ago
Sanctions suck. They are a nightmare. It’s on purpose. If everyone just got on with their lives because they were an exception (like oligarchs) it wouldn’t do anything. We if we had side channels to help these people, god-forgive me for a Kup Fund joke but honestly something like that. But with financial channels like Apple Pay, Venmo, all being wiped out. It’s horrific, and I hate it. It’s meant to bring a call for humanity to the one person(inner circle) doing this so he pulls back to restore order. And see how much he’s hurting his people and the world. No one wanted this, it’s been nothing but chaos. But it will get worse. Find a legit backend to help those in need, and I’m not sure how. Ukrainians, Russians, the world, all lose. People in the US or Canada pissed about gas prices should be lucky they have gas.
Praxlyn81 points1y ago
Majority of Russians are against this war. It’s clearly Putins personal project. It takes less than 30 seconds to find a video on twitter of Russian anti war protesters being beaten. Why are you trying to punish citizens for being caught in something they fr didn’t want?
Sahalio7 points1y ago
Exactly lol
emmiedaryn0 points1y ago
because it’s their responsibility to remove putin. russia is a drmocracy, they have him as a president. for the past 20 years they’ve turned a blind eye to his egotistical leadership. it is not the russian people’s fault that this is happening, but it is their responsibility to remove him as they are living in a democracy. acts like these are ways to influence them to action. again, want to be clear this war is no one’s fault but putin’s. however, the russian people have avenues to remove him which they should be using
Ok-Mix-512967 points1y ago
Starbucks already responded to the Ukraine crisis. Think of the people working there. They need jobs. It’s not their fault. Starbucks is donating what they earn in all the 130 Russian licensed locations to Ukraine. Closing stores doesn’t help. Helping Ukraine helps

This is stupid. The Russian PEOPLE have nothing to do with the conflict.
beestockstuff [OP]-23 points1y ago
I agree. So the only recourse we have right now is financial recourse. What do you propose? Standing around and doing nothing? Sending troops ?
gun_along_with_me18 points1y ago
I'm saying there's no need to hurt the Russian people. Nothing we do from a corporate standpoint well have any effect on the Russian military. They operate completely independently from the private sector. What movements like this are doing is creating resentment for Russian people. Not a day has gone by where some Russian wasn't ostracized for being Russian despite having nothing to do with the conflict.
Where was this energy when Saudi Arabia was slamming Yemen, or when we were slamming Yemen, Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya etc.
Seriously_jst_4real3 points1y ago
Those are "brown" people. That's why the corporations didn't care.
Conversely though "sanctioning" countries by cutting business ties, the hope is to cause a public uproar through its citizens to enact change through legitimate means in their country's political system. The only problem is that so many countries political systems are corrupt, just enough, that it is ineffective on changing the minds of the people in charge. But I bet those businesses also benefit somehow in their home countries. Shell in Britan, Starbucks in the US, even if it is just the free marketing. Hopefully while the stores doors are closed and inconveniencing the customers, they'lloffer crisis pay to their Russian employees much like the COVID paid time in the States during the beginning of the pandemic.
cbcbstargirl22 points1y ago
Most average Russian citizens are against the war in Ukraine. If they speak out against it they will get arrested and likely sent to labour camps/killed. Taking away their jobs and food and money won’t help, Putin does not give a shit
starrrrrfruittttt19 points1y ago
is this a joke??? it’s been said countless times russian civilians don’t want anything to do w this war and even other russian higher ups??? this is just putin being a crazy egotistical dictator!!! russians should still be allowed to work and provide for themselves.
im_a_pimp19 points1y ago
yasss starving and making the russian population impoverished is praxis!
darkwolf52316 points1y ago
What did the Russian people do? They are innocent In this conflict. It’s their government that is doing this
PriparaParadise12 points1y ago
This is so dumb, stop trying to make the lives of Russians worse when they don’t even WANT to be involved in the war. It’s just the government being assholes
xCherryBombshell10 points1y ago
The businesses there are giving jobs to civilians who are likely really suffering right now as their resources are getting cut off because of their unfortunate government officials. We need to have more humility for the innocent and focus on the actual evil.
bigghostb00ty10 points1y ago
Did anyone read the letter? It said all Russian sbux are licensed!
forevermoonshine8 points1y ago
The people do not deserve to be punished for the behavior of their government…
Praxlyn5 points1y ago
im saying?? by this logic all US & Canadian partners should be nuked to hell for what we’ve done to the Middle East
forevermoonshine1 points1y ago
Exactly. And every Starbucks in China should close bc of humanitarian crimes committed by the govt.. make it make sense!
springbreak325636 points1y ago
Think about how you are as a barista would you like if someone shut your store down because the us was in Afghanistan. Getting rid of Starbucks in Russia punishes only the workers.
AcanthisittaLazy26815 points1y ago
pretty sure the weekly update mentioned that Russian stores are donating their profits to Ukraine
Aurora_Boreallis5 points1y ago
You want the Russian civilians to be suddenly jobless? That’s pretty messed up considering they don’t even want this war. They don’t even want their president. They’re stuck in this situation and removing their ability to make money hurts them. PLUS Starbucks is donating Russian store profits to Ukrainian causes. People like you are what’s wrong with the world.

Pretty sure putin could careless about all these businesses pulling from Russia. Its only hurting the citizens who live there.
dysfunctionalwombat2 points1y ago
McDonalds just announced they are closing all their locations in Russia....AND will still be paying their employees.
Starbucks needs to do the same. There's no excuse.

They HAVE suspended business
anonbiotch011 points1y ago
Yeah it's Putin's war not Russia's. Don't punish the citizens for his wrongdoings. They don't deserve any of the backlash they're getting.
AUserNameThatsTaken11 points1y ago
I dont support the war but a vast majority of russians dont support it either so Starbucks pulling out of Russia caysing people to lose jobs due to something they didn't do isnt the way. If businesses pull out of russia like this because of what Putins is doing then that can convince Russians to start supporting the war or cause many to go hungry or homeless since they lost their jobs. The baristas in Russia have nothing to do with the war they shouldn't suffer thanks to a power hunger ass
kastalaesi1 points1y ago
This HAS been addressed. Starbucks will be donating all royalties from Russian sites to relief aid for Ukraine.
breadcat31 points1y ago
Why do you want to punish the citizens for their governments war?
beestockstuff [OP]2 points1y ago
Don’t the citizens always pay for the govts war? Do govts even exist without the people? No. 100% of govts money comes from citizens. Further if you don’t want to go fight on Ukraine the only other option is to cut off Russia financially. Lastly; it is the responsibility of the citizens to overturn their own govt if they are in a situation like this.
anonbiotch012 points1y ago
You're so ignorant you dont even realize what you're saying. Step back for a moment and think
beestockstuff [OP]1 points1y ago
My degrees are in economics so that’s the lens I see it through; what are your degrees in?
dstnygn1 points1y ago
my degrees are economics too but people like you in economics disgust me.
anonbiotch010 points1y ago
You're acting like they have a choice homeboy
beestockstuff [OP]2 points1y ago
They are the only people on earth that can do anything. We can’t topple their govt.
breadcat30 points1y ago
So what’s your plan to help the citizens to overthrow the Russian government? Any ideas?
beestockstuff [OP]2 points1y ago
There’s been dozens of international conventions that really frown on that conversation occurring. The only thing we can do is make it painful enough for the govt and the people to hope to facilitate it sooner than later.
Lil-Snow-Dragon1 points1y ago
But what about people who need the jobs or WILL need them after this?
What about the people that don't participate?
I don't feel this was necessary to say

Did they not just send out an update* today specifically saying they don’t have operations in Ukraine or Russia? Or did I miss it?
Edit: update sentence structure.
-beam-me-up-17 points1y ago
They don't have any stores in Ukraine but 130 stores in Russia (2000+ partners) and all the profits from the Russian stores are going to go to Ukraine
Comprehensive-Gate942 points1y ago
Ah I see, thanks for the info ☺️
imathrowayslc1 points1y ago
Is there any profit with the RUB at current level? Not sure how they can operate without posting a loss right now.
csophb2 points1y ago
There is 130 licensed stores in Russia
Comprehensive-Gate942 points1y ago
Yes, I heard. Another commenter updated me yesterday. Thanks!
angelsbear84-2 points1y ago
Yet my store is cutting hours by a lot. Funny world I guess.
Ordinary-Theory-82895 points1y ago
What does that have to do with anything that’s being talked about here?
Aurora_Boreallis1 points1y ago
Absolutely nothing
Aurora_Boreallis2 points1y ago
That’s a straw man fallacy. Two things can happen in the world and not be connected. I sneezed today and there was an earthquake in another part of the world. My sneeze did not cause that earthquake.
angelsbear841 points1y ago
Did I say that?
Aurora_Boreallis2 points1y ago
You made a comment that had literally nothing to do with this post. I pointed it out.
angelsbear841 points1y ago
Yeah talking about Starbucks here is crazy talk I know. And two pieces of info doesn’t make causation.
looker009-1 points1y ago
One thing i refuse to get in to is politics at place that i work. While it's awful what is happening in Ukraine, i am staying out of this
