ASM’s First SSV (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Fearthebite
I’m honestly just looking for some tips to be successful in my role. I recently took on an SSV role in my store from my previous barista role. I am our stores ASM’s first SSV as a part of their development. I feel like I have gaps throughout my training, and like I haven’t been set up for success like I’d hope to be.

It all happened super quick, probably like four days? I only half completed my activities with them, before being thrown into the floor. Now I’ve been running floors for about a week and a half.

I do feel like I’m getting much more comfortable during the shift, but there always something I seem to miss. I have some ideas on how and what to improve, but would definitely appreciate any advice from those with far more experience than mine.

Is the SM supervising and checking in on your training? Are you sharing this with the SM?

Honestly it’s more so whenever I reach out, but yes I have talked to the about everything. Other than that, I have yet to complete a practice/shadow shift. It’s pretty crazy, but I’m getting there.

Same thing here, but like 3 yrs ago. Memorize you daily tasks that must get done. These change from shift to shift. I was a closer. Restock, remake, clean, count out. Do this for whatever day part you are, do the daily notes and temp checks. Run your breaks. Really, The biggest thing is to take care of the partners with you, and they will take care of you. Always remember that.

In the beginning I was overwhelmed on everything a SSV had to do in different day parts. So I made a list of each task I had to do in order for morning, mid, and close to help me build a routine. I looked at those lists for a good two months until I didn’t need it anymore.

Also, I always run tens exactly 2 hours after a baristas start their shift. Doing this helped me knock out those tens and learn to time each of my own tasks better.

Be there for your baristas during rough patches and always be specific with the tasks you assign them so you can lift some weight of your own shoulders. Before a baristas leaves ask them to do something like a trash run or restock milks before their shift is over.

And take you lunches and breaks!! It may seem like there isn’t enough time in the day but I promise there is and you deserve those breaks!

This was super sweet to read, and definitely helped me with tonight’s close. Thanks so much!

Hi! SM here. Have you tried to talk to the ASM about clarifying any gaps or training you might have missed? The SSV training plan is short with a lot of info packed in a few days followed by practice shifts. I give my new SSVs a checklist with times and tasks to help stay on track. I can send it to you if you would like. Every store is different and has different times, but general SSV tasks should be same.

That would definitely be super helpful! I’ve talked to both my ASM and my SM! I discussed going over training again, and my SM was shocked that I haven’t yet gone through a practice shift, but was just thrown on.

Anyways, definitely don’t blame my ASM! They’re doing pretty well in their new role, and I’m sure they have tons to take on and learn.
