Is star bucks a good choice for a 16 year old? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by IronOld8254
Hey I’m 16m and I was wondering if Starbucks would be good cause I’m kinda antisocial at times but I’m a hard worker so I was or less curious about what y’all think and if it’s a good choice

i think if this is not your first job, then i would say it’s has the potential of being a good choice. when i started i was definitely more introverted and was just generally awkward around people. but having this job has pushed me to grow and continues to push me. but this isn’t my first job, nor is it my first job in the service industry.

i highly discouraged people if this is their first job. and it has nothing to do if people are hard working or not. but in my time here, i’ve noticed A LOT of highschoolers that want to get a job here, but end up quitting between week 1 and month 3. out of the 30+ underage partners that’s i’ve experienced at my store alone, and this was their first job, 5 of them still remain (and this is within 2years) and only 3 of them excelled.

our job isn’t technically hard. anyone could do it, but i would argue that a lot of people can’t handle it. it takes a lot of discipline and restraint. so i would say that our job isn’t easy either.

my intention isn’t to discourage you! i just don’t want you to apply and wanting to work here with unrealistic ideas of what it’s like to be on the inside.

This was my first job… and pretty only job other than when I had a 2nd job at Pizza Hut. It’s very demanding and lots of hard work for a first job. I did not expect it to be the way that it was. But I ended up being fine.

i started at 16f and am now almost 22 working there as a ssv. this was my first job. i will say this job has helped with the whole antisocial personality i had. helped me gain really good people skills i can use later down the road for when i’m ready to start my career. so if you’re looking to overcome that i’d start there tbh. it is not a hard job it just can be tough in certain situations (short staff, busy, etc.) i’d say give it a shot!

totally agree! i started when i was 17 and am now 23, also my first job. i was actually diagnosed with social anxiety when i was 14 and working here really got me out of my comfort zone! i think this is a great first job

Be prepared to work hard in a fast paced environment and think on your feet. We have a few high schoolers who are amazing baristas. My friends son at 18 quit after a week because he found it very overwhelming and couldnt deal.

hey! i joined last year when I was 17 (now 18) and I’d say this is a pretty good first job! it can be really stressful and fast paced sometimes but since u seem to be like me (a little antisocial) it will def bring u out of ur shell and help u become better at making convos and reaching out to people :) Plus if u don’t like it, u can always quit! the benefits are also pretty ok for a part time job :9

Do you like coffee?
Crowchick1731 3 points 1y ago
As a 2 year barista who doesn't like coffee and works with plenty of others who also don't like coffee, this is semi irrelevant
Blonde-RU2-Mastrena 2 points 1y ago
I know. Don't you find that amusing?
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
You don't use your own product
Blonde-RU2-Mastrena 2 points 1y ago
Basically. This.

I guess? I know several people who work at McDonald's that don't love McDonald's too
IronOld8254 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yes I do actually I make coffee at my house all time and I experiment time to time
Blonde-RU2-Mastrena 2 points 1y ago
Great! We need more people who like coffee. Come on in.

It was my first job and i started when i was 16. i’m 6 months i can’t compare it to much it’s a very intense job, you have to be able to move to a different position in a second, people are rude( ik that one seems obvious but until u experience how people are towards people they think they are above. rude means something else ) it’s going to rake months for you to feel like you know what ur doing, it took me 3 months to stop feeling useless there. the people you work with make or break the job. bc i’m a minor i work a generally short week but make sure u speak up if something is wrong with ur schedule/ availability. it’s a fun job but ur required to be social u have to make a connection regardless of how awkward you or the situation is u have to try and that was one of the hardest parts for me.

Not to discourage but at least from my experience it was incredibly hard to get a job at Starbucks. I was applying and going to interviews since I was 16 and it wasn’t until I was an adult (turned 19) when I interviewed and got the job. Despite being the equivalent of a shift lead at a coffee shop I was working at at the time.

The reason for not being hired sooner (from what I was told by a couple managers) was because I was under 18 and the stores I interviewed at told me they’d love to hire me however they were only allowed a curtain amount of minors/hours to give minors and if they already had x amount of minors there wasn’t any hours they could give out for another minor without cutting the others hours

That being said definitely apply and try! I love working at Starbucks and I’m going to be staying here for at least a couple of years. It can get very stressful depending on what store you’re at and how busy they are so just keep that in mind when you’re applying to specific stores!
