Why do availability requests get denied? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sadgirlzzzz
Not my request but I’ve heard from several people their requests get denied.

Why is that even an option? People have school/class and other obligations in their lives. Denying someone their availability is stupid in my opinion. If their new availability doesn’t fit the store’s needs then they can transfer or find a new job. Why deny? Either approve it or just let them know the store can’t accommodate and offer another option like less hours or transferring?? People are just gonna start calling out or switching shifts if they already said they cannot work a certain time or day and you continue to schedule them when they cannot work.

Usually it's easier to speak to your SM before submitting a request explaing why your availability will change. With students they usually already expect changes every so often for weekdays and availability for weekend is usually either fully open or a bit limited. People that have kids or a second job usually also have a limited availability. There are very few with open availability. A lot of the ones that get denied is because they either put 0 availability for weekends and some SM want to be fair to everyone and rotate weekends off for partners and very few partners truly need every single weekend off.

When I was hired on I had full availability and then got married and asked to change my availability to opening - mids and it was approved, but a few months later a sub SM tried getting me to change it and I just told them I couldn't. I moved months later, transferred stores and opened my availability for like 5 hours on sundays, my only day unavailable after the SM told me they had this "rule" where they didn't allow any of the partners in the store to have 0 availability for either sat. or sun. Weeks later they were asking me to open it more because they'd approved a few openers to have 0 Sunday availability neither had kids, school but they had to be at church at 12pm (I went at 10am) so I said no and transferred again when there was chance. Now at another store and pregnant my SM is telling me beforehand that they'll work with whatever my availability will be because they understand my circumstances are changing and don't want me to quit.

I would see when too many people request off on one day they would deny it.

I see your point that it would be difficult to be staffed on a day where many can’t work but regardless it’s still someone’s availability and life. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ some baristas as my store have class to go to and their availabilities get denied. That’s just absurd

I totally agree. Best way is to talk to your manager before then submit the request so they know it’s coming

Exactly. Everybody wants sunday off. My manager accepts them and then wonders why there is 2 people available to open on Sunday.
