News from my SM about unions(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by RGBME24
From what I hear from my boss. Each store is its own union and by that I mean that each store has its own plan. Even when those partners leave the store the agreements made earlier would still stand. I know the union is still in its infancy but from what I heard it sounds like chaos! Not sure if anyone else is hearing differently or is more involved 🤔 but I would love to know what's going on with my future being a 10nyear partner.

This is not how unions work at all. Your manager is lying.

OP's manager is correct. Each store is bargaining for individual contracts.

Right, bht they’re not each their own union. It’s not uncontrolled chaos and every store for itself without resources or guidance (the way OP’s manager is portraying it).

OP clearly clarified that by each store being its own union meant each store having its own plan. This is accurate. OP never said anything about lack of guidance or resources. If a store unionized and every partner that voted to unionize left the store, it wouldn't change the stores union status. Nothing that was mentioned in OP's post is inaccurate or portrayed wrong.

I think OP said they think it “sounds like chaos”

So each store is unionising individually - this is because the current push against unions (not just from Starbucks, this has been an ongoing issue for decades) favours starting in smaller groups. Votes for unions depend on majority vote, but education about unions can take time so it is much easier to start as a store-by-store movement.
With the number climbing every day, they may be planning out a new method for negotiations, but I believe the original intention was to have each store have their own union contract. Mind you, this was the plan when the number of petitioning stores was *three.* I believe we are over 100 now...
Ultimately, a lot of the stores want the same thing, but the original Union Organisers for these efforts was insistent that every partner have a say. They wanted to negotiate the contract, but before they come to an agreement they wanted every employee to be able to have a say on the final negotiations.
At the moment, I believe we are at 4 total, *official* unionised stores, but I may be wrong - it might still be 3. This is *just* the beginning - contract negotiations may not even begin for another year or two. The majority of the chaos on everything largely stems from Starbucks Corporate for fighting it so hard.

So yes and no, Each store will be allowed to negotiate their own contract, but its likely that individual stores would agree to join negotiations, and that Elmwood (the first store to unionize) would be able to create a template contract for stores. Currently there are 6 stores (Elmwood, Genesee, Sheridan, Walden, and Depew in Buffalo and Baseline in AZ) joined by the Memphis 7 in Elmwood's bargaining committee. Ideally we will be able to come out with a good template that other stores (especially those 6) would be able to sign on to. We now have over 140 stores filed for elections, and we are still building this national movement. We have continued to reorganize how things work as this builds out of Buffalo, and now that we have stores in 26 states we are creating more city-wide and state-wide committees for organizing. I can only guess that these would continue on into negotiations, but stores would have to agree individually and elect partners to those committees (sort of like how we run social media currently).

Bosses made a plan to hold anti-union meetings to mislead workers because with the union the bosses lose money and the workers gain it.
