New Hire (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by tjdurl
Hey everyone, I just got hired as a shift manager at a store in Massachusetts, but I’ve never worked at a Starbucks before.
I have supervisor experience, but I’m a bit nervous.

Any tips or anything?

all the shift responsibilities shouldn't be hard for you to learn so i wouldn't let that stress you out 💛 i would recommend learning how to do what your baristas have to do though because typically if you're short a person and need to cover breaks or somebody that was on your shift calls in you might have to cover for them for awhile and it's really not pretty seeing a shift supervisor thrown on bar or in drive thru and they had no idea how to do it 😅 on that note, feel free to ask your baristas questions! if you've got a good team they'll be more than glad to help. My home store has had a few shift supervisors that came from different companies and everyone definitely prefers the ones that realize just because they are the "boss" on the floor, that they are new to the company and always have something to learn, especially from baristas that have been there significantly longer than them. We've unfortunately also had some shift supervisors who didn't care to learn how to do barista tasks and responsibilities and was for some reason on a High Horse and power trip every time they came in lol it wasn't cute 😅 not only did it make a lot of the baristas lose respect for them because of their attitude paired with the lack of knowledge, but it would make them bad at their job even as a shift because they wouldn't be able to read the floor as best as they could and wouldn't be able to call plays as best as they could (if you think it takes 5 mins to prepare X and it actually takes 30 you're going to make a bad call, if you think you have enough of X prepped and you don't because you don't know how to judge how much of it we are going to sell, youre going to have the next shift upset with you because you've screwed them over, if you think you need 1/2 people on bar but you really need 2/1 on bar for this time of day etc etc little things like this are going to build up)

TLDR; learn basics of what you expect your baristas to be able to do and don't be afraid to ask questions of anybody on your team 💛
