CS is confusing (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nearby-Philosophy-25
I don’t know if I’m just a little slow, but the way my fellow partners set up the brewing station is just mind boggling to me. I never know what’s supposed to be brewed next. Granted, I didn’t get much training on this part of the job. I also find myself not really knowing what to do when I’m put on CS. Help?

hey! so depending on the time of day, you'll be brewing at most 3 types of coffee, blonde, pike, and dark, over the course of each cycle. if its in the morning and you're brewing all three, you'll set your timer for 10 minutes. if you're brewing two, you'll set it for 15, and just one coffee is a 30 minute timer. each time the timer goes off you'll brew a new batch of coffee and restart the cycle. the order for the cs cycle is brew coffee, check signals, clean/wipe down the cafe, and then complete a signal task!

CS can be confusing or overwhelming at first- sometimes it feels like you're not helping enough or you feel like you're frozen in one spot bc there's not much to do. depending on how busy it is, after i brew coffee and check the signals i basically check what needs restocked (outside signals obviously- things like cups, lids, taking dishes back, etc). you're mostly playing a game of Find Something To Do. your store should have a tiny posted list of cycle tasks to complete towards the end of each cycle- something like doing dishes, sweeping the cafe, organizing the RTD&E case, changing one trash, etc.,, just do one at the end of each cycle.

as for not knowing which coffee to brew next, it doesn't really matter the order! you can always write it down on a sticky note to help you keep track too. if i'm brewing all three coffees, ill write blonde, then dark, then pike, for example. i'll brew a new batch of blonde first, dump the old one, and set my timer for 10 minutes. then i run over to check on signals, see who needs ice, milk, whip, etc.. then after that i restock on cups and lids and i'll wipe down the counters for the people on bar if it's looking a little swampy. if the cafe has been busy that day i definitely will run through and wipe the tables and give it a little sweep. at this point the 10 minute timer has probably gone off, so there won't always be time for a cycle task, which is okay.

sorry i wrote so much LOL i just remember being super confused and overwhelmed when i started learning CS!!! dont ever be afraid to ask your SSV what to do next if you get lost or stuck. i always just try to keep myself occupied when that happens- do the bar people have enough cups? lids? are the sani buckets full of muddy strawberry water? what about that puddle of milk on the table in the cafe? the cycle doesn't always have to be super structured as long as youre following the basic guidelines of it i guess. im a huge over-explainer but hopefully this helped😭😭😭

Cs Cycle Tasks

1) brewing coffee
2) stocking milks
3) stocking cups and lids
4) emptying trash cans
5) filling ice buckets
6) changing sanitizer (every 2 hours)
7) work on back-ups ( like whipped creams, refreshers, chai etc)
8) wipe down/ sweep lobby
9) check to see if sandwiches and bakery items are stocked (during peak when a partner can’t leave the area due to having so many orders 😅)
10) load of dishes

I hope this list helps! There’s always something that needs to be done.

During peak, coffee should be freshly brewed every 15 minutes (one coffee at a time)! Once your coffee is brewing, work on the cycle tasks until it’s tome to brew another fresh batch and repeat!

Cs is one of my favorite positions now that I know what I’m doing 😂 hope this list helps!

There should be a sticker on the side of your brewer that lists the coffee types (pike, blonde, dark) and has the little hang tags for putting on the urns. Follow the sticker. Look at what was brewed last (normally the right brewer) and then brew whatever comes next on the sticker.
