Just a small rant… (i.redd.it)

Four hours is the minimum length of a shift that they can schedule you per Starbucks policy (and often state law). They need to pay you a minimum four hours if you're scheduled and don't volunteer to leave early.
Weird-Abalone-2008 27 points 1y ago
interesting, i thought that non coverage hours were for things like meetings so this rule wouldn’t apply? i never knew that
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 16 points 1y ago
Damn okay, this is why I went to Reddit with this.
sci-fi-lullaby 8 points 1y ago
Those 2 might be clean play
bigghostb00ty 5 points 1y ago
Or a meeting.
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
That’s what I was thinking, but I’m an opener so I’m really confused.
sci-fi-lullaby 1 points 1y ago
Omg :(
Critical-Touch4244 6 points 1y ago
For everyone who’s confused, it’s a deep clean shift. You’re only there to do cleaning you can’t get done during business hours
Weird-Abalone-2008 3 points 1y ago
i thought clean plays were paid
capybaraRage 3 points 1y ago
They are. Non-coverage is label to what kind of hours are being used. Coverage is for the floor, admin is for SMs to work on payroll/schedule, non-coverage is for things you need to do without customer interruptions (clean play, putting away the order, etc.) Hope that helps
persona-2 5 points 1y ago
Starbucks has no minimum shift length. If your state does starbucks will follow that.
cookiemonstah87 4 points 1y ago
Is it 4? I thought it was 2
SplashStick 3 points 1y ago
I’m curious about this policy too. I’ve often seen clean play shifts scheduled 2 hours for 3 partners each. Unless noncoverage doesn’t apply
joongiesem 1 points 1y ago
wait your saying my manager broke policy last week when he last min changed my 4 hour shift to 3??? (and i cant even get him in trouble for it since i got called in early)
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 35 points 1y ago
I’m supposed to be working 40hrs!! I’m so confused. My husband and I can only work morning shifts, and we only have one car. Wtf am I supposed to do!? Can I take this to court!? I need to pay fucking rent!!
Flowerfuls 15 points 1y ago
Check state laws regarding partial unemployment. Some states have them.

Otherwise I hear it’s a common spring thing. Would have to give it a few weeks to see if things get better when the slow season is over.
overturned23 9 points 1y ago
Nobody works 40 hours a week expect the SM, sorry to break it to you
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Before I was hired and scheduled for 40hrs weekly.
dthomp0806 1 points 1y ago
40 hours aren't guaranteed and usually only given to shifts and managers. If you've always gotten that, you've been lucky. Or have a nice sm. But no one is guaranteed any amount of hours, even shifts. So unfortunately they can cut as many as they want/ need to.
overturned23 -9 points 1y ago
that’s just not possible with the hour cuts right now
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 11 points 1y ago
It was before the hour cuts. What I’m meaning by this is I thought they’d be cut down to 36hrs that I could do. Just not 22.
woodsprite5 6 points 1y ago
What? I was working at least 40 hours a week and often went into overtime for months on end until I finally lost it and quit. The only people at my store who were getting scheduled less than 35-40 hours were teenagers
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
I was regularly scheduled 40 a week the past almost three years until recently, nice try tho.
sci-fi-lullaby 1 points 1y ago
Tell your sm for sure
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
She actually just quit…
sci-fi-lullaby 1 points 1y ago
Is there an ASM or another person assigned to yalls store?
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
There is, and I’ve talked to her. She just keeps telling me that she’s trying to fix it and then does nothing
riilss 26 points 1y ago
See if you’re able to pick up shifts at other stores. Starbucks can’t guarantee 40 hours as a barista/shift but you can go to other stores for more hours.
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
They guaranteed me 40 when I got hired three years ago, and only recently cut my hours.
chuckywucky 2 points 1y ago
By guarantee, I assume you mean they just said, "yes we will give you 40 hours." Or did you get a signed contract?
dthomp0806 1 points 1y ago
Yes that's what usually happens. During the interview the sm will tell them oh yeah you'll get 40 hours. Then they start and 99% of the time do not get that and cannot believe it when it happens. I've seen it so many times over the years.
happybowlita83 17 points 1y ago
For some of us it's a blessing to at least work 20 hours and still be able to claim benefits. I've worked with some SM that try to hire to keep everyone at that average and never give baristas over 30 hours to give that opportunity to more people. Some SMs will offer more hours when they can but then during this time of year have to cut back for almost all partners, and they usually try to distribute hours evenly so everyone that needs to qualify for certain benefits is able to. Current SM has no one under 20 hours unless they're a minor or were already working under 20. Previous SM had some partners getting over 35 hours that weren't using benefits while they had others that needed benefits at a fluctuating 15-20 hours, making it complicated to be eligible.

Honestly the policy does say the company can't guarantee a minimum or maximum amount of hours, and that ASMs amd SMs are the only full time employees.
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
My store still does over 80 k a week in sales during this time a year, and still cut all our hours so that’s bulll. Half of our employees don’t even use the benefits because they started hiring tonsssss of minors, so it’s not like they need to save on that.
happybowlita83 2 points 1y ago
As I said it's up to the SM, your SM is clearly one of the ones that hires tons of partners to cover as much possible availability and doesn't care to distribute hours fairly.

Once again its up to your SM, the DMs and RMs are the ones that instruct to cut hours per district, if your SM isn't persistent they usually cave in and cut hours. Our SM cut back the bare minimum in our schedules because our sales are close to normal and today we had a proxy come in and cut more for the week, something our SM would never do.

I've worked at stores with those numbers, and had both types of SMs at each. One that didn't cut our hours to keep up with the actual sales, because they'd work on the floor too and another that only ever worked off the floor and would cut hours to please the DM and so on.

I suggest you look for another store close to you that has a better SM if possible.
rlogranite 5 points 1y ago
That's a clean play shift, probably after the store closes. I work at another job in the morning, so I definitely would not show up for a 2 hour non coverage shift in the middle of the night.
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yea, plus I’m an opener. I don’t know that stuff.
rlogranite 2 points 1y ago
Talk to your SM and let them know. Don't just do a no-show
Joshmaysart 5 points 1y ago
This is why I quit! I had rent, food, all the normal adult stuff to pay and I was scheduled 5 hours a week. Luckily I work with teenagers so ofc nobody wanted to work, or left early, so I ended up regaining mostly 40 hours. But i was so burnt out, so I found another job. My mental and physical health is doing so much better.
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yea, quitting may be what I need to do.
neighborrcat 3 points 1y ago
Our DM has been on our SM’s ass about labor hours because our DM’s higher ups at the regional level are on HIS ass about it. It’s technically the “slow season” and each store has to accrue hours of labor based on multiple things. 36 hours a week for a barista is a lot at starbucks and usually only given out like that when there are staffing shortages. There may be a problem with your availability too and what your SM has available to schedule others as well. If you can get the app, shift marketplace has been a savior for me recently. But Like someone else said, some states have partial unemployment laws but usually there’s nothing you can do about this besides get another job. It sucks and I hate work life in the 21st century.

edit: spelling
smoolbeean 2 points 1y ago
if you live in california fyi there is no minimum. but say you got scheduled 4 and only work one hour you are entiled to 2 hours pay
TigerAffectionate659 2 points 1y ago
I could never work a schedule like that. Consistency is all I ask for 🧐
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I’m looking for more consistency. So, this sucks
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
Like if they want to schedule us barely 20 hours a week, why tf is it being spread across 5 days??? Give me more days off if you are giving me short hours
NKuiken 2 points 1y ago
It's getting real tough out here..
Silver-Towel-4449 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
