“venti pink drink spilled on bar” sized rant (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Salt_This
Hi y’all, I am using a throwaway, and I could really use some advice. I’ve been at Starbucks since the first week of January and I’ve been given two skill checks by my SM so far. I haven’t passed them, why? I have been on bar maybe three times. I am always put on drive thru or front and warming for my entire shift. The times I’ve been on bar I’m taken off in under an hour, one time I got a literal five minutes before my shift told me to go to warming because I was in the way, apparently. Pretty much everyone who’s more experienced treats me like this. A few days ago when I was given my second skill check, my SM took me to the back and told me that I have two weeks until my third skill check. If I don’t pass this one, I’ll be separated from the company. My fellow partners that I’ve talked to haven’t received skill checks, and don’t think what’s happening is right. I told my SM that I don’t get any bar time, and they said that they’ll try to get me some. This happened at my first skill check, and I did not receive this promised bar time. They also say that while I’m on drive thru I can be “looking at the recipes of what the customer orders” however I find this to be impossible since we’re almost always busy and there’s hardly any time to even breathe? I don’t want to be separated from this company because despite its flaws and the difficulty, I enjoy it. Does anyone have any advice for this situation? I apologize for this messy rant, and thanks in advance.

I started in August and had that same problem so I mainly just tried to talk to my shifts and get me put on front bar to get as much practice as possible and do drive bar at slower times. Your SM sounds like a piece of work though. Also understand with hour shortages and 4 hr shifts its easier to throw just one person on bar and leave it like that unfortunately especially when they have corporate breathing down there necks about drive times lol . Good luck tho

i didn’t really get any bar time until i started working night shifts. if you’re able to work nights, it might be worth trying to get some night shifts in!

hey there, i first started in 2016 and have left the company twice but always come back. ive never had a skill check but i’m a great barista now. if you need help with recipes or anything, feel free to message me! your SM sounds tough…. i’ve never heard of anybody being let go bc they didn’t learn everything fast enough. try to work nights if you can bc it’s much slower and you’ll be able to get bar time

Maybe reach out to your dm and explain you haven’t been given bar time and you have been promised by even your sm? (Aka making it known they’re aware, but not helping). They can’t directly put you on bar, but they can intervene and make sure you’re getting the practice you deserve

Right now Starbucks has been trying to get rid of employees. Since you’re new it might be that they are targeting you, and it’s unfair. Im not new and I’ve been being targeted and it hurts. Im a premed student and I can’t afford college without Starbucks paying for it 😢 losing my job would be losing my education so it really hurts and I’ve been doing my best not to mess up, got a final write up for being 8 minutes late despite not ever having an issue before
