Can I apply for the cup fund to help with rent? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by icecreamsadwitch
With my hours getting cut so badly I'm really worried about rent. Would it be worth trying to apply for the cup fund, or would it be a waste of time?

Nope. I looked into this a while back, unfortunately you would have to provide an eviction notice from your landlord to be approved for it. So basically you'd have to get yourself kicked out in order to get rent assistance for the apartment you were just kicked out of. Makes a lot of sense, right?

With an eviction notice, they usually give you at the very least a 5-to-7 day ‘warning’ of actually being evicted, right?

This is what happened to me, and as soon as I got the notice I applied for the CUP fund & sent the proper info & they sent me $1k in less than 48hrs.

It wasn’t *all* the money that I needed, but I was able to combine it w the money I did have & I’m still living here.

This very well could be the case, at least in some areas, I'm definitely not an expert by any means. Although even so it's certainly still a bit ridiculous of a requirement and certainly a risk you should consider thoroughly before pushing your luck that far with your landlord. (Ofc sometimes you have no choice.)

When I applied I was down bad with about $24 to my name, with several non-utility bills overdue, which I had to inform sbux of during my initial application. Despite having all that information, I was still denied any assistance because I didn't have an eviction notice. Considering a large portion of the CUP fund is raised by partners themselves, I think there are some insane restrictions on partners who are seeking help in desperate situations.

It likely won't help. Back when I tried to apply for it, it stipulated the you already had to have late rent notice and/or evictions in place. It won't help you pay for rent you're not behind on, unfortunately.

Okay, thank you so much for the info!

That being said, when I applied for it as soon as I got an eviction notice, I sent a photo of that notice to my manager along with applying for the fund and they were able to wire me money in less than like 2 days.

If you’re efficient with getting back to them, they’re efficient with helping you out.

When I tried applying for it back in early mid 2021, they wanted me to tell them how I spent my money because I asked for the full amount.

It's not worth the demeaning and condescending "Oh, you need money? What happened to your money, huh? Show us where it went."
