“Real job” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Affectionate_Fart
Does anyone else’s parents disregard their work for sbux as a job?
Like the way I view it I have decent (if not great benefits like ASU/401k/Medical/Dental/Vision, ect) and my mother had the audacity to say “Is your SO okay with your job change?” I work less hours per day, have time to sit down and chill, OH and make about the same as my prior job where I made MAYBE $.50 cents more an hour (?) if that, but without tips and with patients assaulting me. I also get free coffee…which is a plus as well.
I just find it frustrating as it’s every time I see my parent they’re like “Is your partner okay with this?”
If I said SO Is super supportive two weeks ago, why ask again because they care more about being happy than working in healthcare.

They confuse the gainful employment and upward mobility for concepts that still exist in the work place. 'Not real jobs' are the jobs these days.

But even in nursing there is no “upward mobility,” end of the day you have the probability of wiping ass and getting smacked. I also remind them that Sbux just cut a $4k check to ASU so I can attend classes for free. -.-

Yes that is basically what I said.

People see our jobs as a joke and like “anyone can do them” I can tell you right now, most people aren’t cut out to work at Starbucks. It is a lot harder than it looks. Not the actual job, just the crazy fucking customers we get.

Eh, i think it’s pretty easy…but I’ve also cried in a supply closet because of how a 2 person kiosk is.
Then proceeded to hide in said supply closet when an ex coworker/friend got pissed that they were fired for giving away free product and tried to blame me…so…it’s not normal lmao

My parents aren’t super happy with me working here. I was an ED social worker and I got tired of it and wanted a job change. My partner was good with me changing my job and I’ve been at Starbucks for 9 months and I absolutely love it. I am a SSV now and my mental health is a lot better. Yes the pay isn’t the best but I enjoy going in to work. I wish my parents would see that. I get it that they helped me get through school and they were proud of me for being first generation college student but social work is hard man. I wanted a break. Le sigh…

Dude I work in the ED, I know your pain. The patients are the worst. I had a patient say “oh you’re the nurses’ sidekick!” And I just rolled my eyes and said “No. but let’s make this clear, I’m giving you new socks while your nurse sits at the station on TikTok.” I’ve lost a massive respect for healthcare. I get paid the SAME amount at Sbux as an ED tech with an 8 minute commute (over the typical hour) and am more productive than doing 12’s.

dude I totally understand you! I was a CNA making $14/hr. Understaffed, underpaid, and over worked. Why would I do all of that for $14/hr when in June of this year I can make coffee for $15/hr+ tips. Techs and cnas go under appreciated and it’s absolutely disgusting
Affectionate_Fart [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, I was getting paid ~16 an hour as an EDT where I was expected to know ACS, know what a stemI looks like, and also know everything else under the sun, and god forbid I tell someone “That’s outside my scope of practice *asking about iv fluids and meds*, and..not gonna lie I have met some pretentious nurses…one took home some Iv supplies and gave a chemo patient some fluids and her daughter had a blog and said “I’m so thankful for nurses. They helped mom, gave her an IV outside the hospital, made sure she got fluids…ect wrote more stuff, but didn’t put down the name…” and the nurse was like “I’m glad she didn’t put my name down…”
And i almost turned around and said “Oh because that’s a lot like medical battery? Because your license can be revoked for doing shit like this? Or is it because you were practicing medicine and that’s not what your degree is in and you could likely go to jail??”
Note: with elderly and the frail, it’s not wise to just randomly pop a liter or two into someone because the electrolyte balance is frail and you can cause serious illness, especially if someone is already sick.

Jesus… glad you’re out of there!

Last year when I was promoted to shift the first thing my parents said was “oh that’s cool when are you gonna go back to school though?” I kinda regret going back to school. I also quit Starbucks two months ago and I kinda regret that. Starbucks is a pretty decent job imo. I think without pressure from my parents things would’ve gone very differently.

I’m starting to figure out that my parents are like they are because they’re piss poor judgements. I’m a lot happier with my SO and I’m glad for his personal insight. I quit Starbucks six years ago (to get a “real job” made $13.00/hr as a medical secretary and almost crashed my car more times than I could count, would not recommend. Now I’m a shift making $16 with additional tips. (I made $11 for a 5 hour shift…which isn’t bad)

yeah if ur not working corporate wearing a suit and tie daily or going out to save lives then working customer service as a barista isn’t seen as a “real” job which…. sucks
Aurora_Boreallis 3 points 1y ago
My mom is mad I quit my career in cosmetology to go back to Starbucks.
1. I hated the salon I was at
2. Running a business is forking exhausting
3. Health insurance
4. I make more money now than I did doing hair because covid and all the price inflations but nope this isn’t a real job

I used to teach full time for a few years, Starbucks was my job throughout college, and I worked once a week, and in the summers to keep my discount.
I'm sure my parents are disappointed, and so is my bank account (I taught in a very high paying area). But, I no longer have anxiety attacks on Sunday nights, and I don't need daily migraine medication anymore, so I don't care.

Have either of your parents ever bought coffee at any shop? No?

If they have ever bought any drinks they need to either keep their mouths shut or stop going. 'Baristas aren't necessary'

Love how they also encourage you to prioritize your partner's approval of you over your own personal happiness.
Affectionate_Fart [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah. My mother is all for attempting to use my discount though! She bitched that we don’t sell coke…and it took everything not to say “it keeps the peasants away” lol…but imagine the BS requests if we did soda… “I want a 1/8 coke, with 2/3 water, with 2/8’s of lemonade, and a cherry on top…oh I also want it hot and with no foam!”
