How do you all handle the emotional stress and decompress from shifts? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Nieios
It might just be my particular store at the moment, but the tryhard culture and general vibe is just grinding me down emotionally at the moment, to the point where I'm getting home almost every shift with no social battery/spoons left whatsoever. Especially with consecutive shifts decompressing enough to be at baseline going in the next day is getting harder and harder, and I'm having very little left to give at this point. Truthfully, I work at a decently run high-DT volume store that is properly staffed, so it's really not the volume or the work itself that is giving me issue, but a couple of the baristas and one particular ssv (i am ssv myself) are just really burning me out. For reference, been at this store about 4 months now coming back to corporate from licensed, so there's nothing I can do except look elsewhere when my 6 months comes up. Tips for handling the mental load would be greatly appreciated.

nicotine. jk don’t do that. but i remind myself that its only temporary and look forward to my check. and i just have a lot of calming hobbies i do when i get off. like play video games, quilt, crochet, listen to podcasts to keep my mind off it. i always try to find one positive thing that happened that day. or if i have something to look forward to doing after work i’ll keep reminding myself if i get thru this i can go do that thing. it took years of working at starbucks and spending countless breaks crying in my car. also i kinda just go numb like i just autopilot all day i don’t let anything a customer or a barista says get to me anymore.

a warm or hot shower helps me relax for sure . i know its sometimes hard to find the energy for that especially when u come home feeling absolutely exhausted but just letting the hot water spray on my back & neck makes me feel soooooooo good. if im feeling too tired to get in the shower i'll get a hot washcloth and just put it on my shoulders and neck since thats where i feel like a lot of my stress(?) comes from. aside from taking actual physical breaks from work (kinda hard to say no to working a lil extra these days bc we need all the hours we can get😭) this has seemed to help me a lot :) i believe in you! better times are coming soon <3

So when it comes to scheduling, I told my SM and ASM I have two requests: 2.5 days off (two days off and at least one short shift), and not to be back at work in LESS than 12 hours. The reason why I said not to be back at work in less than 12 hours is because I explained on how I like to have a balance between home and work life. Another thing I like to do, and I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE, is like every 3 weekends I request a whole weekend off (Friday-Sunday) so I can use that time to do what I want, visit family, or stay home and relax.

Shower and cuddle w pets or loved ones for me. Also hobbies or just watching a show or video you don't have to pay attention to. Make sure you give yourself some time to just "be quiet" because you're taking and listening all day. Turn off the music, turn off anything that makes noise and just listen to the silence

What Sriracha Said but also in my case I generally only work mornings. Also in a high volume dt store. I'll go home and lay down after my shift, hate myself for about 7 minutes and then just take an hour or two to myself before starting my day of homework or cleaning or whatever. It really helps me to have that balance

That does seem to be the common method. I'm a closer only with a naturally late sleep cycle, so I tend to go to sleep around 2am, wake 10am, in 12pm. I tend to keep my responsibilities to the time right after I get home, because I want to have my free time block not weighed down by what I have to get done, but that's just me. Idk, I feel like if I standardized my time any more than that I'd feel like I'm at work still, emotionally speaking

Oh, I also used to smoke weed but im currently studying to be a homicide detective so I quit that. But it was nice to smoke after work too.

Yeah I totally understand that. Due to mental problems I personally need to adhere to a relatively strict schedule. I can handle a few deviations but I generally keep a tight leash on things. It's what works for me, and it's not for everyone
