i turned 18 and woke up to getting kicked out of my parents house. i know everyone’s hours are getting cut but mine are literally half of what they were these past few weeks and if i can afford to do so i really want to continue working at starbucks because i’m in the college program.
1) would it be any use to ask my manager for more hours
2) how do i ask for that
3) if not, what’s the best job to keep at the same time as starbucks?

you should definitely ask to pick up hours from ur manager! if that doesn’t work, i would call to other stores and ask if they have any availability too. as for other jobs, if you have a car uber, doordash, etc jobs are good since u can choose ur own hours!
i wish u the best of luck and hope everything works out :(<3

With gig work, keep in mind insurance increases, gas prices, and normal wear and tear on your car.

Former partner/shift here. Ask your manager for (1) more hours and (2) that you're able to pick up shifts if there are callouts. If you have a message board somewhere in the back, leave a note that you're looking to pick up extra hours if your fellow partners need shifts covered. I've found that if you are reliable and willing to work, you will get scheduled more going forward. If you flake/call-out/have weird availability you get scheduled less.

You can always ask for more hours but doesn’t mean they’re going to do it. Whenever I asked my manager for more hours before hour cuts she would do it but now since hour cuts she can’t give me any because she literally has none in the system.
You would just ask to speak with your manager and be like “Hey, *explain situation* may I please have more hours”
Now if they give up you more hours, they may not give you enough. One time I was scheduled for 19 hours, asked for more and got 25.
But definitely go for it

There is also the cup fund which I believe is to help out baristas in this situation isn't it?

You might be able to get some money from the CUP fund and/or partial unemployment

asking for more hours is great ! u don’t know if u can get more if u don’t ask, and let all ur partners know that if they need a shift covered to let u know ! as for second jobs, when i first started at starbucks i only worked mornings and had another job at the mall, since i would get off around 11 and the mall opened at 11, closing there worked perfectly for me. you can also call other stores and give them ur number to let them know to call u if they need coverage, it’s a bit hard to come by rn but it’s totally worth a shot. im sending u all the good vibes rn and i hope everything works out for u, that’s a really terrible situation to be in

Worst answer you can get is no. With corporate wide shift cuts it may not be the hours you need. One of my coworkers workers also worked at the local hospital scheduling appointments. Personal question. Do you have a safe place to stay? When giving you that terrible birthday present did they give you important documents like your birth certificate? Ive been on my own since 17 and I at least want to confirm that the actions of your parents are neither normal or healthy. I also want to encourage you every year of my life has only gotten better. My DM is open if you need someone to listen to you.

Express your concerns with your manager. I have said from the start I want as many hours as possible before I’m off to school full time. I’ve expressed my gratitude with her flexibility with my schedule. I actually picked up another shift by posting my need for a shift on our local shift exchange on FB. That got me a shift in the same day and it’s relatively close to my home store. Sadly if they don’t give you more hours I’d jump ship. ASU is pointless for me but you can still go to school on your own. Being able to afford your living expenses has too be top priority. If you can fight for more hours and receive them and want to stick around do it. Hours fluctuate at companies like Starbucks but they will go up… eventually.

If your store has a group chat, put it in there and ask if anyone wants to give away a shift.
marvelmanda1 points1y ago
My sm said if we want more hours to just look at marketplace. She says she has no control over the less hours situation going on
No-Pearl0001 points1y ago
you can always ask to pick up shifts from other stores
