Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I told my manager I needed 40 hours when she hired me and she said twice that she had that available for me. But she just bumped my hours down from 40 to 35 next week. Should I be worried or is this fluctuation kinda typical? (self.starbucksbaristas)

You should feel a little better knowing that you might have the best case and don’t be surprised if the replies are getting half the hours you are as a full time employee. I wouldn’t worry I would realistically expect even less hours.

But like why would my manager tell me multiple times that she has the hours and then start cutting me 🥲😅

You seriously need to understand Starbucks business is an an entity itself. Your manager is one of the least powerful people at the company they just manage to keep your store afloat by following directions to a T. It seriously is corporate consistently straining the manager to cut as much labor as possible you need to give them slack im sure they’re trying as hard as they can to assist each and every one of their partners better than corporate would treat you if they had the opportunity.

Yeah that’s true. I worked for a small business for 7 years before this job so it’s a big culture shock(? Idk if that’s the right term) I came here because of the promise of 15 an hour in may and the benefits. I’m just worried I made the wrong decision.

I will say in my own opinion that you have a very good situation going for yourself & I think you should hold on!

That’s really tough to say but the benefits will out weight that of a small business in the end. I just say be patient $15 and hour will come and if you transferred to the west coast you would make over $16 automatically. Starbucks wants to care but we are the back burners when it comes to a lot of there tough decisions.

No one I know gets 40 hours a week unless you’re an ASM, SM, or your SM approved the OT.

I went from being scheduled 35 hours to being scheduled 13 hours. Be grateful for only loosing 5 hours a week

35 hours basically is full time at Starbucks. Probably the best you’re gonna get.

I don't know anyone who gets 40 hours except managers. If you regularly get around 35 hours, see if you can pick up a 4 or 5 hour shift from someone at your store or another.

No one gets a full 40 on schedule because of possible OT.

Partners use to get scheduled between 30-38 hours /5-7 hour shifts so they have that bumper Incase they go past their time.

But also everyone and I mean everyone is being forced to cut hours.

My store has changed our schedules twice already and we all lost hours.

Have you gone into overtime at all?
mekayla96 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
No I just started 2 weeks ago

Well that’s the obvious answer gone. I will say that this is common practice for most Store Managers to avoid overtime. I’d make sure that you’re clocking in and out on time, if you’re asked to stay late a little then do that. Don’t ask to go home immediately at the end of your scheduled shift and you’ll get pretty close to your 40 hours. Starbucks is extremely strict about OT so we will never schedule anyone for exactly 40 hours unless they’re salaried.

Okay that makes sense. I mean I have clocked in like 5 minutes early a few times. Idk if that’s a problem or not. And I never ask to leave until someone tells me to lol. I genuinely love the job it’s really fun so I don’t want to have to look for something else. It took me way to long to land this job
