i keep seeing 20/25 feet of building, starbucks property, etc comments, but can anyone provide a link or ss of the policy? we aren’t supposed to ask customers to put out their cigs/ not vape bc it could “hurt cust connection” but i’m really tired of people smoking in the dt.

It's not a policy as far as I understand, it's a local law thing. Unfortunately there's a lot of ignoring local law so that way customers aren't sad.
Something that generally works, but not always, is if few customers complain on your guys behalf. You can smell the smoke in the cafe when someone is smoking at the window. A few customers complaining and noting that you guys aren't allowed to even ask the smoker to stop despite local law shows Starbucks that there's money potentially being lost by breaking the law. That's all they care about so unfortunately that's the angle we have to fight from.
And like we were all told a few years back, everyone who enters the doors is customer! Even you.

yeah my manager said we can’t tell them to because they’re in their car which is their property. (which is on sbux property? but whatever ig.)

Nope. SMs aren't law specialists and many lie about what's legally possible because it's convenient, either because they don't know the law or they hope you don't.
It has zero to do with private property and everything to do with local code regarding smoking in public. For example in my state, it's not allowed within 25 ft of any entrances/exit/windows that can open/ventilation intakes. Some customers pull up a bit far away from the window but they'd be hard pressed to manage 25+ feet.

Girl contact your DM right away if that’s what you’re SM is saying. If your DM is saying the same thing contact OSHA and get you some money.
Im pretty sure it’s illegal to smoke anywhere near a public place in all states. If you’re smoking in your car and next to the window, that’s not 20-25 ft away.

Oh maybe I’m not supposed to, but if I’m dto and I see them smoking on the screen, after taking their order I always say their total, remind them to please put out the cigarette before approaching the hand off window for the safety of my partner, and thank them for choosing Starbucks. My dm or ssv’s never have a problem with it. Plus there are a couple of other partners that do the same.

We say the drive through is private property and close the window in between taking their cash/ handing their items if they refuse to put it out.
mekayla961 points1y ago
People do it all the time at my store it’s so annoying. There’s literally no smoking signs on the building.

We had a person smoking on our patio, harassing customers at their cars in DT, then screamed and threaten all of us when we asked him to leave
