The grass is always greener... (self.starbucksbaristas)

I'll keep this short. I worked at a fantastic Starbucks in Florida and loved every minute of it. Easily my favorite job I've ever had. However, due to some personal issues, I had to move back across the country to my extraordinarily small town and the closest Starbucks is about 45 minutes away.

Between the hour cuts and that crazy drive, I knew it would be in my best interest to just go full time at a local coffee shop. I started last week and I hate it. I always thought that working at a locally owned place would be so much better, so much more chill, and you could just enjoy crafting drinks. For some, that is probably true. For me, not at all.

I just miss working at the Bux. For me the pros always outweighed the cons.

I'm not sure what the point of this post is. I guess I just wanted to put my voice out into the void. But I hope that it inspires some of you to love your job just a bit more, in spite of the (very valid) complaints that can be given about working for the Siren.

Much love to you all.

More than anything, it’s the management and coworkers that make or break your job. I’ve scrubbed jail toilets and enjoyed it because my coworkers were kind and pleasant to talk with (many of them were immigrants from Eastern Europe, so I always had some interesting story from them). Likewise, I’ve worked other food service jobs and simply the shift change between supervisors was a night-and-day difference between if I wanted to work there or not.

Sbux, as a company, has its problems, but let’s not forget that our coworkers and SMs make the greatest impact on our experiences as Sbux employees.

A whole mess of things. The short list:

1. No "standards" are enforced so everything is made slightly differently from barista to barista.
2. The training was literally nonexistent.
3. No supervisor or manager on the floor at any given moment.
4. My coworkers are condescending as hell. Whether it's intentional or not, this one infuriates me. They all knew I was coming from a Starbucks and yet were "so impressed" I knew even the most mundane, like how to make a latte vs a cappuccino.
5. Food. This place wants so badly to be a restaurant whether they admit it or not, and the amount of food on the menu is straight up preposterous.

There's so much more I could go into but that's the big stuff. It's just not a good fit for me at all.
