How long did it take to get used to everything? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by EitherRefrigerator41
I’m brand new, working in an already understaffed store and I’ve only had a few shifts that weren’t strictly training, but I keep messing up orders when on register (mishearing them, entering in stuff wrong, etc.) and working so slowly when on bar. Which I know is normal, but I don’t know if I’m messing up a normal amount or if I’m just doing terribly. How often did you mess up when brand new and how long did it take for you to get comfortable enough that you were working like everyone else?

I also tend to take it personally when I mess stuff up (having to remake drinks, ringing something up wrong, mishearing a customer, etc.) so again IDK if I’m at the level of a normal new barista who’s overthinking everything or if I’m just doing badly.

I always share with my green beans this; it takes 3 months to know the basics of the job, 6 -9 months to feel comfortable, and a year to be confident. You'll get there, my friend. Be patient with yourself. It's not a race. Ask your teammates all the questions; they want you to be successful also. Practice and ask for cheat sheets if you haven't gotten them already. You got this!

I'm 2 months in and just feeling somewhat comfortable with DTO. In my store cafe folks are way more understanding towards green beans and repeating.

It gets better. Register is tough to master. I find it's easier if you've got your beverage recipes memorized to be able to ring. When you have down time, go through the different screens and try and build some muscle memory where the modifiers and base beverages are. Go easy on yourself!

It’ll get easier soon. Hang in there!! You’ve got this!

you’ll get there eventually. I’d say it took me 3.5 months to actually know what I was doing. This also was my first job. There are still things I don’t know how to do. Like clean the ice machine? No idea ask somebody else

I always tell my partners to give themselves 6 months to settle it. We have a ton to learn and we're expected to learn it all in a ridiculously fast-paced environment. You're going to make mistakes, and that's ok, everyone does. Hell, I'm a 7 year partner and I still screw up fairly often! 🤣

Be kind to yourself. You're doing just fine.

It took me about a month to fully adjust to everything. I was in the same boat of coming into a store that was understaffed, mostly due to covid, and the only way I adjusted was by being reminded that this was all new to me. Everything comes in time and practice, don’t be afraid to ask your coworkers if you can for guidance and look at the recipe cards! Those things definitely help!

6 and a half months in and I made cold brew for the first time a couple days ago :) learning with this job can be a slow but steady progress.

It will be okay! I’m 6 months in and I still make mistakes here and there. It will all click for you, there’s lots to learn! You got this!

about 3 weeks of at least 3 days a week working/ training for me to be able to close alone and handle the drinks, you'll get the hang of it just memorize the shots/ syrup rules and don't hesitate to bust out the drink recipe book
