Any other green beans get anxiety before their next shift? How do you manage it?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by felinefireghost
Just started about 11 days ago, today is my 7th shift and last day of training. I worked for Starbucks about a decade ago for 4 years and I knew it like the back of my hand, but I’m older now and having a hard time catching on again. I worry that I’m not going to get it back, and I just hate being new and trying to learn the culture of my store.. you know like what’s okay what’s not okay, who’s nice who isn’t.. just overall being-new stressors. Anyway, I get mad anxiety before my shifts. Like I have to go in tonight and I’ve had anxiety since yesterday, couldn’t even enjoy my day off. I don’t know about what exactly except I’m just nervous. I know it’s just coffee and I know it’ll get easier but the anxiety kills me, my logical brain is having trouble overriding it. I know I need to eat before my shift at least once but anxiety has eaten my appetite.
Are there any specific things you guys do to deal? Certain ways of meditating or mantras you tell yourself or exercises/stretches… I’m desperate. I try listening to music to get me hype and get into a “I can do anything I set my mind to!” type of mood but it doesn’t always work because it doesn’t get down to the root of the anxiety. Please help. TIA.

I have gad (generalized anxiety) and depression. I can’t really eat in the morning cause anxiety and it’s the morning so I don’t eat much before work. I leave for work 30 minutes before my shift. So like tomorrow I work at 5am-10:30am, leave my house by 4:30 but be at work at 4:40. I listen to music on my way there. When I get there, I look to see who’s on the floor. The shift and the baristas. If I’m like super okay with everyone then my anxiety isn’t as bad. But if it’s someone who is always rude to me, it’s pretty bad. When I get on the floor, I always check to see where I am or ask. I personally love drive thru. I would rather be on drive thru than anywhere else. I have no idea why. Bar is stressful and causes me a lot of anxiety. Warming is alright, I get annoyed in those early morning of brewing all three. And CS is meh, I’d take it over warming but not over bar.
Hopefully that helps some! That’s my routine for work!
Edit: this month on the 28th will be my 2nd month working at sbux

CS is probably my least favorite! I utilized your routine today though and I got to work early, listened to music on my way there, and looked to see who I was working with today. Still learning everyone’s names but the leads happened to be super cool today. The first one put me at the window and the second lead ended up moving me to bar, which I later thanked him for giving me a chance. I did pretty well, two of my coworkers said I was killing it.. so I guess until I’ve been there for a while it’s gonna be a new experience every shift while I learn how everyone works.
On another note, I came home and took a nap after my shift and legit dreamt about work the whole time lol. I wasn’t even thinking about work but my brain was I guess, and I basically worked a whole extra shift in my dreams and woke up tense AF. Hopefully the Sbux dreams are temporary haha.

This is my general advice, and work is basically the bane of my existence. I’m about a month into it, and it’s going better than I expected.
Whenever I start to get overwhelmed, I try to think of the absurdity of the situation. Call it “floating rock” mentality if you will, I pretend I’m playing a game. Got yelled at by customer/manager? Lose 5xp. Forgot how to do something? Mini side quest, gotta get the information from a wise elder. Slammed on oven or bar? Wooo you’re in buckwild mode earning double xp. Pretend it’s girlsgogames and you’re playing the barista simulator.
This may be helpful, or useless. But I can honestly say it’s what gets me through every single shift, good or bad lol. At the end of the day, it is JUST COFFEE. Do your best, learn from your mistakes, ask questions. But don’t forget it’s all just a game you have to play to earn the coins you need for your rent, and you’re done playing as soon as you clock out. :)

Hi OP! I’m going on three months at The Bux so I’m still considered a green bean. It’s very difficult when you first start and it can definitely cause anxiety. I battle anxiety and depression daily, and things like this can affect it a lot. Mine came from not being good on café or cold bar in the beginning. Do you feel like you’re anxious because of a lack of training? Or is it the customers?
felinefireghost [OP]2 points1y ago
I think my anxiety is made worse by just not knowing what to expect, I’d say the customers really because sometimes they ask for crazy things and I’m not sure what we can and can’t do yet.

I completely understand the feeling! It is super overwhelming to learn the till and these customers are some of the most complicated I’ve ever worked with, and I’ve been a waitress and host. I learned the register in just under a month, if you want to DM me I’d be happy to show you some tricks that helped me and just be here as an ear to listen if you need it! It is super difficult, but you’re doing wonderfully. Don’t hesitate to reach out or ask for help!

I super appreciate you! I didn’t get to work much of the register today but we’ll see what tomorrow holds.. I’ll identify where I’m struggling the most and definitely hit you up for some of your resister tips and tricks. And you’re right, they are some of the most complicated customers ever lol. Thanks so much for your support<3 I’m so glad I found this sub!

Not exactly the same circumstance, but I think you'd still benefit from another person who's got anxiety.
I don't let myself worry about work off the clock. Sure, a thought or two might come across my brainum, but I don't dwell on it. I strictly ration my mental energy I give to this job. My overthinking about work is designated for during my shift, and the drive home from it.
As a green bean it's entirely normal to be anxious. You feel out-of-place with the store as a newbie, you've got a lot of complex things to learn, and it seems like the customers are impossible. If it makes you feel any better, we've all been there. And that fear goes away when you begin to get comfortable.
It took me a while to feel confident, but now my biggest source of anxiety is legit waiting in my car before my shift.
Biggest way to reduce anxiety as a green bean is to STUDY bar. Learn the shots, syrups, and combinations (I know I contradicted myself saying not to focus on work off the clock). That shit will be the biggest hurdle and the building blocks of everything in sbux world.
Hope this helps, good luck mate

I really like your rule about not thinking about work off the clock. Fortunately I’m pretty comfortable with the recipes and now it’s just getting used to how each lead wants things done, how each of my coworkers works, and how to handle crazy customer requests. But I’m gonna be better about not worrying about it until the drive to work and the decompression-drive home haha.
