asked to find my own coverage(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bsta19
so i woke up with a fever & a sore throat.. my store is apparently already down a person & the shift asked me to find my own coverage. i don’t think it’s safe for me to go in, but also no one is responding. it’s almost 6am here which is why i’m not getting responses on a sunday morning. i’m not really sure what to do because i feel like sh*t. calling out on a sunday sucks, but i’d rather not put my coworkers at risk. thoughts?

You called in… you tried to find coverage.. you took all the right steps. You take it easy today, take care of yourself and maybe touch base with your manager to let them know how you feel. Do not go into work. It’s is not your fault at all even if they have to close the store for the day.

thank you, i’ll definitely do that. i appreciate your feedback.

You don't even have to find coverage if your sick. That's the SSVs job or manager, whoever is at the store.

yeah that’s what i was thinking. thank you!

Sometimes I ask my barista to try and txt other partners for coverage but I never force them to come in if they don’t find it. Sometimes being understaffed and having an additional person call out makes it really hard to flex off the floor to see if anyone else can come in. But you shouldn’t have to go if you are truly sick. Take care of yourself first.

It does make it really hard, but it is still never the baristas responsibility to find their own coverage when calling off sick. If you were the barista in that situation, I’m sure you wouldn’t want the added stress — especially when it’s clarified repeatedly in training that you don’t have to find coverage for calling off sick — of making a bunch of texts or phone calls to coworkers who probably don’t want to get that text. I encourage you to do what you need to do, even if it means slowing down your lobby to remove yourself from the play, to find coverage for your baristas, or pass that responsibility on to your SM.

List all the people you attempted to contact and say you had no luck so they can try anyone else besides them. And tell them you'll call the store if anyone gets back to you.
Side Note: if you are actually sick it's not your responsibility to find coverage unless you are a key holder and are physically at work but need to go home.
But doing the above will give them NO reason to say anything about or to you about it lol you did your best and that makes you a great partner!

thank you! i always feel bad when i need to call out, especially with the way my shift told me to find coverage. i did what i could despite being as sick as i am, so hopefully they won’t be mad at me

It can be overwhelming when the team is short a person but things happen!

I do also have a question about this. What happens if you do come in with like ten masks on your face and just answer Yes to all the covid check questions and fail the temperature test? Would you then be finally excused? Lol

Depends on your store, I’ve been told to stand in the corner and wait for my fever to go down
liansu_2 points1y ago
That’s not cool at all. Way against policy
Ibebarrett-1 points1y ago
Agreed. But we were a few blocks from the SSC, so being understaffed wasn’t an option 😰😰😰 gotta save face for corporate and keep them in their detached bubble

As long as you’re using sick time, starbuck’s policy is it’s the SM’s job to find coverage
Ibebarrett0 points1y ago
Doesn’t mean that’s the managers policy 😂😂
verdeuce1 points1y ago
Tell your SM when you can that you called in and were asked to find your own coverage. Not required and they should know so they can talk to that ssv

at my store, our manager asks the person to try to find coverage. Its never a situation of “find coverage or you have to come in anyways.” Its more like try to get your shift covered so we arent down a person, and if you cant then we will figure it out. I think thats the right way to go about it tbh
