That isn't normal. I'm new and I am put on drive way more than other people but have been allowed thr opportunity to learn bar and other positions. I still feel it's unfair I'm on DT so much but not as bad as what you described. Like I was on it for 4 or 5 hours the other day and was about to be ask to switch to another position bur my shift ended up moving me because she knew I was there for a while. They should be rotating you. I would speak up and say you need more time doing other roles

Trust me. I understand what you mean. Newer partners want to learn how to make drinks and bar so they can help others who actually get tired of bar. But as an SSV it's also our job as playbuilder to utilize everybody's strengths on a certain role when necessary. Now, I'm not saying that your SSV is a terrible one for saying stuff like "what did you learn in training?" because that's really how some of them are. For me personally, I always give as much bar time to green beans as possible and whenever they ask questions about a drink or about bar in general, I give them straight answers along with an explanation of why a drink is made a certain way or how to bar more efficiently.

That being said, there really is a reason why certain people are being put on certain positions. Do not be too discouraged or upset at your SSV. If you don't feel comfortable asking that SSV or any other partner to help you, just ask your SM to schedule you more time with a trainer and let them know why.

What shifts do you work? If you’re AM, try to pick up some evening shifts with a different supervisor & ask to be on bar. You can always ask other partners your questions too! Or if you have the time, type the drink in at DT and it’ll show you how many shots/pumps/etc in the drinks

that’s not normal. ive been at SB for three years and have been a trainer for about half that time now. if any of them are trainers, THEY need to be retrained bc as a new person, you’re in the right. you should be moving positions a LOT so that you have the chance to be a well rounded, cross trained barista like i bet they are. i get when it’s busy you gotta put partners where they shine best or fully know the position BUT my best training technique that’s made some of the best baristas is throwing them into the fire and letting them learn as they go bc it REQUIRES them to ask questions and learn from them so they won’t have to ask the same question again!!! Talk to your SM and if they don’t do anything, transfer to a more reputable store, don’t quit completely!!!!

Not normal. Speak to your SM.

i get this completely: i started a little over a month ago and have been on left bar (mobile and cafe) twice. like i get that i can only work mornings and it’s busy and i’m new but i’ve offered to have a few night shifts a week (i babysit 3 days a week) and nothing has been done. i don’t understand how i’m supposed to know bar if i’m never given the opportunity to learn it

definitely say something! i feel like it’s pretty normal for shifts to put u on dto or dtr when you first start out but it definitely shouldn’t take this long for you to transition! when i first started i wasn’t getting any bar time after i felt i was ready and i mentioned it and never had a problem after that!

“Ew no i want to be on bar” right back at them and follow it up with an "I *need* to be on bar to actually learn and retain everything."
