so any partimers being told they have to have open availability or separate? I keep hearing the words, " Going forward post Covid..." limited availability is not acceptable. do any of you feel like you are being forced out? (self.starbucksbaristas)

There’s no way they can enforce this. People have lives and are truly unable to work at certain times. As a shift our manager really pushes us to have open availability but it’s definitely not required
canidieyet_ 12 points 1y ago
yeah, if they threatened to fire me because I refuse to work past 4:30pm I’ll do them a favor and just quit on the spot.
overturned23 5 points 1y ago
as you should. may I ask why you don’t like working past 4:30? absolutely no hate just curious

i’m the winter months, it gets dark at 5pm (my commute is 30mins so it gets dark as i drive home) and i can’t see well at night. it’s easier to keep it the same year round rather than having to change my availability twice a year lol

i’m also in college, and i ruined my physical and mental health trying to balance working late at night on top of school, chores, etc, just to have to be at work super early the next morning. i wasn’t eating or sleeping for days at a time. that way, i knew i would have time to balance work, school, and personal time.

so valid

It IS in the Barista job description "Availability to work all shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays." I don't meet the job description at 3 Weekend days a month.

I'm not sure where you're seeing that? Per the partner guide, an hourly partner will be asked to provide a schedule the days and hours available to work by filling out a partner availability form. There's another blurb about how a partner will be expected to make himself or herself available for work for a minimum number of days or hours each week, but that's incredibly vague. I've known partners who only work 2 days a week, partners that cap out of 15 hours tops, and partners that have at least 3 days completely unavailable. There's two partners at my store that refused to work any weekends ever, still gainfully employed as they have been for 4 years.

I could be wrong but I think that they definitely can fire you if your availability doesn’t meet the stores availability. At least in states where you’re an at-will employee.
sheep_heavenly 5 points 1y ago
Of course, yeah. But that's more like when you have 8 people that all have open - 7 am M-F only availability but you only have enough hours for 5 of them. I've honestly never seen it result in termination, that's more of a SM shoving someone they don't want out. They usually just make it clear you won't get anywhere near the hours you need with a narrow availability.

I don't think Starbucks can specifically state you have to meet certain hour requirements or amount of days worked to be employed by their company. However, depending on your schedule (for example college students or minors or whatever else life has to offer for anyone really), the manager does not have to hire you if your schedule does not make filling the store schedule beneficial. Example would be that if someone applied but needed to have weekends off but the stores busiest days were the weekends and they're short staffed , their schedule just wouldn't fit.

Overall, the company wouldn't be saying that but managers don't have to hire you based on your availability and how it fits into the stores schedule. Starbucks is not a full time job , but a part time job that offers possible full time hours. Your hours aren't guaranteed (in light of current circumstances) and this is a job with high turnover rates.

Yes, OP, I wish a current or former SM would weigh in here. I had totally open availability although my former SM scheduled me for mids almost exclusively. So I arranged all my other life activities around working mid shifts and now prefer them. New SM scheduled me at 5:30 am Just one day without even asking, I had not even met them yet. I decided to change my availability to 9am to midnight. That was 3 days ago and they have not approved my change. I have given them 12 hours that the store is open and 3 beyond for if we are ever allowed clean play again. And they can't approve that? An SM used the issue of availability in the firing of Cassie Fleischer. That SM claims if you're not on the schedule a minimum amount of hours you are "termed"? That's BS.

A new SM isn’t going to know your preferences. You have open availability and they scheduled you at 5:30. Nothing is odd about that.

Have you talked to them yet? Maybe they haven’t looked at it yet. Maybe they need more early AM people. Maybe they suck. Who knows until you talk to them.

Wow.

I think my district manager is forcing this. I am surprised not to see this being talked about here and the lack of response to this question.
4shotsin [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Oh dear...well I am in school but at the tail end of my degree. Going forward post Covid, I have obtain a great paying job in my field. I was on track to be ASM and then SM and then life threw me a curve all. I was going to be a lifer. Lol

I am glad to know this isn't company based but managerial based.

Edit: I'm 58. Don't ever give up or think you are less than because of your age. I love Starbucks and I hate they won't let me keep a foot in the door, but at the end of it all, I have to do what is right for me and mine. District Managers and Managers don't last, they move around, things change. I might be back some day.

I haven’t heard about this specific issue but I 100% feel like I’m being pushed out.

I used to work 4 days, but now I’m only able to work one weekend day/week. My manager left for her coffee break two days after my new availability was submitted and somewhere along the way I’ve been scheduled for both days for the next month.

Any manager I’ve spoken to has told me it’s my responsibility to find coverage for the additional shifts, even though it’s blatantly a management oversight.
BeardiesRule112 3 points 1y ago
Nope nope nope. They schedule you out of your availability… do not look for coverage.
persona-2 1 points 1y ago
Unfortunately it is their responsibility to find coverage. It’s crappy, but if they don’t work it and don’t find coverage they can be fired for it.
BeardiesRule112 1 points 1y ago
Nope. Not when they schedule you out of your availability. I just went through this.
Practical-Mind3174 3 points 1y ago
I was forced out eventually of two locations that I tried switching to. Its rough cause not many people can afford it. Would be greate having extra cash right now for my bday
Bris50 3 points 1y ago
I always tell people to never choose a job over school. I know it's hard when you have bills, but you don't want to be 40 years old working at Starbucks. It's depressing. I know because that's me. I hate my life right now😑
Practical-Mind3174 2 points 1y ago
Thats why I left I saw so much discrimination when people reach 30 still working at Starbucks to pay bills. I am conserdering proceeding with legal action against my starbucks. I know well the person who instigated can get sued.
habitzouis 3 points 1y ago
I am in school. If they start enforcing that I will have to leave. My availability is very limited, due to school and internships, but I’m literally doing something everyday of the week.
4shotsin [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I really believe this is a district thing now, and I am very sad about it. This is all happening bc my manager is transferring and a new manager is coming in. It's going to be terrible for the district.
krty98 2 points 1y ago
I only have availability to work two days a week and my store manager has no problem with it
4shotsin [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Every store, every manager, every district is different. They are going to cut the staff by half they say, so when people leave, they won't hire anyone to take their place.People that have limited availability aren't needed. So my resignation is signed.

Funny thing is I left Reddit bc if so much negativity towards the company. I was drinking the coffee...I didn't understand it.

I do now.
4shotsin [OP] 2 points 1y ago
It's in the Barista handbook and they are using that fact to force me out. This isn't the first time they have tried this sadly.
