Why do shifts & managers try to stop you from promoting yourself? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MemesandSpeech
Honestly, ever since I shown interest to becoming a shift, two of my shifts becoming at my neck on what to do and all. **(Make sure everything is dated, FIFO, Cleaning, KNOW YOUR BEVERAGES! etc.)** In which of course I understand **(I talked to them about it and asked for advice on what I need to do and approve on, etc.)** but also find it hypocritical at times they don't follow their own advice.

I seen them put Foam on lattes **(When the sticker says No Foam)** and cup it like no biggie. BUT, when I do something like that, they will tell me how I'm not reading the ticket and say **"how can I become a shift if your not reading the ticket?"**

Same for Ice pitchers. They will reuse the same pitcher even though they will talk about **getting a new one once the current one is empty because it's a health hazard / risk.**

**I get some shifts let us do what we want but at times they don't do their job. (Not trying to bad mouth all shifts.)**

Honestly as a shift, whenever I find out someone is trying to promote, I purposely put them in situations where they need development in and then walk them through whatever they’re struggling on. (Like deescalating situations with customers, coaching newer partners, etc.)

If you’ve already talked to the shifts themselves about it and they brushed you off, my best advice to you would to be to either bring your health code violation concerns to the store manager or apply for a shift position somewhere else and transfer to a different store.

Another thing that I can add to this is that the thing which helped me promote was becoming a trainer before I became a shift. You learn a lot about the process of things, how to coach your fellow parents, and you develop fundamental leadership skills. (I was on the fence initially when my manager first brought it up, but it ended up being a TON of fun.)

I’m really sorry that you’re going through all of this. Starbucks is supposed to be fun and it sounds like you’re straight up not having a good time 😅 I hope that things start looking up for you soon though and everything gets better soon

maybe lead with your ending line haha. i have to say this is not all shifts and it’s a bummer that yours are breathing down your neck like that.

This post is incredibly relatable to me. I am now a shift but it was a hell and a half to get there. I have many horror stories about my experience so far at my store, and how horrible it was for me to finally get the promotion I very much deserved.

Call them out on what they are doing wrong and if they say something just tell them you are trying to lead by example
