I’m so over the bitter old men. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by heyitsme963
We have a regular who is rude every single time he comes through drive. He stops at the box, says “grande pike” then drives away. When I’m on window, he always lectures me on something I “did wrong” with his order.

A few days ago, he looked at me and said “stopper” so I tried to hand him a stopper. He rolled his eyes and said “why would anyone want a stopper? That’s stupid. Nobody wants this thing. I DON’T WANT A STOPPER.”

Yesterday, he pulled up to window with his hand out, holding a 5 dollar bill and said “I’m good,” which meant nothing to me because it was the first thing either of us had said. I thought maybe it was a sarcastic response to me not asking him how he was. I handed him his drink and tried to give him his change. He again rolled his eyes and said slowly and loudly: “I don’t want this shit. I said ‘I’m good.’ That means I don’t want change. ‘I’m good’ means ‘no change.’ It’s not that hard.”

At a different store I frequently work at, there’s another condescending, bitter old man who gets a grande dark roast in a personal cup and specifies “no room.”

Except that he complains if you don’t give him an inch of room. He also complains if you give him too much room.

He won’t put his cup into the mug we use to avoid touching personal cups, says “you need to get my coffee now” when I tell him his total after typing it in, and complains and lectures if someone who hasn’t seen him before dares to ask him what size fits in his cup or if he wants anything else.

And these are only two of them. I have stories about at least 5 different regulars between those two stores, all old men, all condescending and rude, and all who make jokes and talk with the men but roll their eyes and yell at the women.

I’m over it.

i hate the bitter old men.

one comes every day and gets a venti americano with cream. he won’t even say “i want a stopper”, he makes a hand gesture when anyone hands him his drink without one. imagine my poor green beans who have no idea what the fuck his stupid hand gesture means. and GOD FORBID WE GICE HIM HIS CHANGE. it’s infuriating. be a fucking grown up and use your words. i don’t care what you’re life is like outside of your visits to starbucks. the baristas are people too who have to deal with these coddled fucking babies who can’t make simple coffee at home.

Covid made it worse. Old men don't like change. I found they really started getting worse then.
Practical-Mind3174 5 points 1y ago

lavendersigil 33 points 1y ago
As soon as a customer curses at me, I stop making their drink or ringing them up and say "I won't serve you if you curse at me". I dont care who you are you don't get to do that shit to me
mewwissa 32 points 1y ago
He definitely snacked on a few paint chips when he was a kid…and sniffed the gas….a lot
anitasdoodles 31 points 1y ago
Why is it always old men??!! I snapped at a few when they were rude to me, and they were so shocked! Like yeah dude, it’s not the 50s anymore, women don’t take your shit like they used to.
[deleted] 10 points 1y ago
PERIOD!!! no one ever believes me when i go off about how lots of the old men who come through are so entitled… they look at me like i just said women are the superior beings and all men need to be killed. bruh, i’m not a radicalist for wanting basic respect from people who demand i all but kiss their boots every time they come in 🙄

i just hate old people

I work in an area where people move to, to retire and die, lol. I'm used to the older people. Yes, covid has made it worse. In my long time working at Starbucks, sometimes I treat these customers like a game. Sometimes you can make them change. I get to know their name, and then when I see their car roll up on DTO, I say "Hey (insert name here)! Grande hot like with no stopper right?" Then if I'm soloing dto/dtr, I can ask them how their day is on window and kinda get to know them. Some of these old men are bitter and lonely. That approach works sometimes. I still have crotchety old men who don't budge, but I just say to myself "I'm really happy I am not related to those people". Don't let someone steal your energy. Its sad that some people choose to live life so angrily.

I try my best to complain once, quickly, to a coworker then have a positive interaction with a customer after someone like this, but it still hurts. More in a “this is what the world is and I just have to deal with it” way than a directly insulted way, but it’s not a great feeling.

I have had so many of these it hurts...There was this one guy who always ordered a tall coconut milk mocha, decaf, no whip, but would do so in the most condescending and dismissive ways. He (jokingly?) called me an idiot once, b/c I had forgotten what size he wanted or something, and any time one of the newer baristas had to ring him up, it was a whole thing. And god forbid you actually try to charge him for his coconut milk.

But yeah, mostly with these kind of guys it's just straight black coffee...like, if you're going to have black coffee, why go to Starbucks? Brew it at home, or go somewhere faster or cheaper, because they always complain about the price and the time it takes to get through the line.

I could just go on and on about guys like this...we had an entire three tables outside that a big group of them would push together and hang out at for hours, every damn day. We called them the raisins, b/c they would just sit in the sun all morning talking about rightwing crap and complaining about needing to wear masks to enter the store. Don't miss that at all lol.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 4 points 1y ago
The price of plain black coffee isn’t even that much. Maybe at a bodega you’ll get it cheaper but 3 something for a large coffee you’re not gonna get much cheaper than that lol
yboold 8 points 1y ago
Pathetic old coots are gonna rot dw about it too much

THANK YOU for pointing out how sexist these men can be. no one seems to believe me when i say some regulars treat the male and female workers differently. NO ONE BELIEVES ME, they call me a “sensitive girl,” despite my he/him pronouns pin 🙃
so thank you for not being afraid to say it, this post validated my anger sm!

there’s a bitter old man who comes to my store often. He gets a Venti black tea lemonade with extra lemonade and extra ice and a trenta peach lemonade (“NOT THE TEA! JUST THE LEMONADE!”) with extra peach. If it’s not right in color he throws a hissy fit about it. He never says thank you either. By extra lemonade and extra peach, he means EXTRA. His wife came by once and she was so much sweeter and even tipped us. Bitter old men are part of the reason why i put my two weeks in yesterday lmao

edit: peach lemonade is a trenta. i wrote venti on accident🤦🏻‍♀️
dj-dawg18 6 points 1y ago
I once had a man at the window hand back a perfectly handcrafted latte because the DTR guy put a stopper on his drink when he didn’t ask. God people are so entitled
Sdee1234 6 points 1y ago
Im over it too. Im to the point with this one guy that all I say to him anymore is the total if at all. You dont deserve pleasantries. Especially not after threatening VIOLENCE on my baristas when we were oh so rude to his wife by telling her "Im sorry but we are out of black tea for the day, can I get you anything else?"
Levinem717 5 points 1y ago
I treat shitty customers as though they don’t exist.
heyitsme963 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Oh I definitely raised my eyebrows at “stopper and change” guy then turned away before he drove off.
Independent-Ear9140 4 points 1y ago
had an old man yell at me TODAY because he ordered an iced coffee w/ milk so I made it with 2% and he actually wanted half and half. so he sat at handoff and berated me until i got done remaking it. SIGH WHY ARE THEY LIKE THIS
FfierceLaw 4 points 1y ago
Our older dudes are pretty sweet guess we're lucky or it's the South
batman_thedead 3 points 1y ago
we have a regular who’s also some bitter old guy, and he literally doesnt say words anymore, just shoves the exact change in our hands and walks away

today was especially wack, a different not-regular grouchy man comes up while I’m on register and says he’d like a cafe mocha. i ask what size and he says “just a small” and i ask hot or iced, he says “hot” with his head turned away and then “HOT PLEASE” immediately after. he then asks for a croissant, so im like you want it warmed up and he said yes, looking really annoyed. he’s trying swipe his card several times so i assume he’s done ordering and i ask for a name for his order and he goes “WOULD YOU STOP ASKING ME QUESTIONS, I CANT HEAR YOU, JUST THATS IT, THATS ALL I WANT, PUT WHATEVER” and he pays and leaves. i was and still am kind of confused as to what i did for him to have that response
Koala-Fluffy 1 points 1y ago
You didn't do anything. He's just mad at the world for losing his hearing.
Zealousideal-Star448 3 points 1y ago
They all need to be lectured, stop taking their shit. Say your human not an alien who can read minds. They need to be told that not everyone knows everything about you and get over it
Joranaxis 2 points 1y ago
The worst of it is how different their energy is between guy and girl baristas. Im trans (ftm) and changed stores twice after coming out (been working various licensed and corporate stores since 2017) and the bitchy old man customers never treat me how they used to when I was presenting as a woman. I was used to getting chewed out so I have a really thick skin, but I almost never have a need for it anymore because guys, old and young, always want to buddy buddy up with me opposed to how I’m used to being talked down to or creeped on by men. I had a male customer just yesterday get pissed at me for the first time in like 3 years (asking me if I had a problem and if I wanted to start shit because he asked me a question while I turned my back so I didn’t hear him) and I just didn’t know what to do since I’m not used to it anymore haha. Old men are still scawwy :’)
bottlehalffull 2 points 1y ago
I have cracked a few of them over the years. One won't leave until he waves hello to me now. Just be a respectful smartass back. One tried to spell out G-R-A-N-D-E to me because I didn't hear the size the first time, so I wrote his name as M-I-K-E and a smile next to it. He picked it up off the counter and laughed so hard. Idk, I'm grumpy so I just match their energy a bit but with playfulness.
Minute-General-2090 2 points 1y ago
I ain't afraid to spite back. A old guy came in, yelling at me that he wanted a mocha to the hottest setting we can make it. I said ok but he kept going on and on about how "cOfFeE Is MeAnT tO bE HoT! nOt iCe, nOt lUkE wArM... HOOOTTT!" and I said "yell at me again and I will have my store manager here to take you out. I will not take this, especially from a old guy like you". He shut his mouth and I kind of slammed his drink down and walked away. He grabbed it and wobbled away. haven't seen him since but honestly, if customers get mouthy, I get mouthy back but with finest so I dont get fired or something.

Reminds me of this one guy (70's +) that comes every morning. I work at a licensed store and apparently before I worked there he was super friendly to the other girls. Cue me getting hired and the first day he snaps at me because he couldn't use EBT to pay and him yelling at me because I didn't know his order. After covid the team changed 3 fold there's only 2 baristas left that were there before I got hired one guy and one girl(27). He was friendly to the guy and to the girl he was excessively friendly telling her her his life story. I told her be careful becuse creeps are gonna creep but she said he was cool. Que him asking her out and when she said no he snapped at her and berated her. Now he glares at us why walking by. He still tries to talk her up or berates her depending on his mood btw.
Practical-Mind3174 2 points 1y ago
You and me both, old men is the reason why I am not at my job anymore.

I had to go to pcc, my store keep this ahole away from me tell my shift supervisor this was a stalker lol.
xylophonezygote 1 points 1y ago
Once I asked an old man his name and he was like “you don’t need my name. Just get me my coffee and hand it to me” like gotdamn
heyitsme963 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
They all think they can do our jobs better than we can but they wouldn’t even be able to figure out how to clock in for their first day of training
xylophonezygote 1 points 1y ago
In nyc they stopped having stoppers and these nasty old men act as if that was a personal decision I made to ruin their day
