Out of state transfer advice (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MacaronJolly
Can anyone working in Knoxville, TN give me some insight on the pay rate for an SSV?
Potentially transferring from another state with a fairly high wage and wondering how big of a cut I’m gonna take.
If anyone has ever transferred to another state, is negotiating your pay rate possible? I would like to avoid reducing my rate as much as possible so I can like… survive lol :(

When I was a barista I had to move home to Florida from California for a few months during the height of Covid. I was going to go from $16.xx to $7.xx. My jaw hit the floor. Luckily I was able to negotiate up to around $10.

How did you go about negotiating?? Did you negotiate with the SM at the store you were transferring to? I think I’d be going from $16/hr to about $12/hr which is pretty significant so I’m hoping to get at LEAST $15 if not more

Tbh, and I don’t mean to be harsh, I don’t think you’ll get 15. It depends what the market minimum is for that state and that area. I worked with the manager and said I can’t go that low, she negotiated with the DM because ultimately the DM signs off on it. You can try and ask for $15, but be prepared for them to possibly say no

Well it’s supposed to go up to at least $15 in the summer anyways so I didn’t think asking for $15 was that unreasonable. I mean I’m willing to try but if they aren’t going to pay me more I’m going to have to look for something else.

It’s all about what the minimum wage is where you’re going, and the market minimum for your position

Always attempt to negotiate. Your manager and DM can advocate on your behalf for a more reasonable amount. This exact thing happened to me coming from Portland, OR having made 16.xx and they offered me 11.xx in St. Louis as a shift. I have also been with the company for 11 years and made several pay raises over the years and was at 10.xx when I moved to a Oregon 6!years prior.

I definitely will try to negotiate. If not, it’ll mean I’m going to have to look for something else pretty quickly. Thanks for the input! :)

I'm a barista here in Nashville making 12.50 an hour and I am pretty sure my SSVs are making around 14-15. Never transferred but I would suggest negotiating!
