etiquette of discussing hours with manager? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Classic-Lack-6404
this is maybe a stupid question, but i’m relatively new to starbucks & have worked in various service industry places in the past. something i’ve noticed is everywhere has a different etiquette around talking about changing the amount of hours. in some places, i’d only need to shoot a text saying “hey, i’d like to switch from 20 to 15 hours a week”, and others, i’d be expected to have a pretty in depth conversation with my manager before such a change.

i’ve found starbucks to be pretty weird in that it’s simultaneously quite in depth/specific (thinking of the way shift leads schedule everyone’s actions, breaks, etc) but also detached (it took me a while to adjust to the scheduling app, where i can just request time off without talking to anyone or explaining why), so i’m not super sure what the vibe for asking to work a different amount of hours would be like.

obviously, this is going to vary store to store. if it helps, i’m in a mid level busy, cafe (no drive thru) store. i just wanted to know y’all’s general experiences and how you go about these things.

thanks!

I usually text my manager the change so we both have it written down.

honestly I just change my availability and put in the reason, and if I want to work a certain amount of hours then I will let them know the rang I want to work (like 20-25)
