Hello, I’m starting as a barista soon and I wanted to know what I should expect for training/tips on how to make things easier/faster. Advice is greatly appreciated! (self.starbucksbaristas)

Ask questions! If you don’t know something ask! As an SSV I love when new baristas ask to learn something or ask what they can do during down time. I also love when they are making an effort to find stuff to do during down time instead of doing nothing and just standing. I do understand there is a learning curve though but tbh asking questions and just putting in effort is amazing in itself!!

As an SSV also, I second this! And when I was a trainer, I loved the trainees that would ask questions because it meant that they understood the content to a point, and also wanted to know more! Ask questions, and just do your best!

Indeed, I’m just nervous about all the different drinks to make lol. I think I’ll learn eventually though :). Thanks for your input!

I just started 4 shifts ago and I would agree with the previous SSVs. Ask questions, keep yourself busy, ask if there’s anything anyone needs help with, do a customer support cycle task, ask to try a drink or tea if it’s slow.

You seem genuinely excited! That’s awesome! Show your excitement Ned share your excitement with the customers and other partners and you’ll do great.

You’ll have plenty of time to learn the drinks, I’m sure. Everyone there wants you to be a successful part of the team.

Ayeee a fellow green bean. I wish you luck on your journey! And yesss I’m excited and I’ll take what you said with me as well. I will definitely be asking questions and keeping busy. As a retail manager or supervisor would say “there’s always something to do” lol. Thank you for your input! :)

dont be afraid of using the "im new" card and ask questions
Coolguys5 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Probably gonna be using that “I’m new” card for the first month 🤣

As a SSV and someone who used to be that barista that was afraid of asking questions, ASK QUESTIONS. You'll learn faster and become a better partner, versus people who work on my team who think they know things but then constantly get caught being defensive because they either misremember something or were taught wrong. We've all been new before, don't worry about needing help sometimes. At some point, also have some confidence! Second-guessing yourself can be destructive after so long.

Yeah that seems to be the resounding answer. Especially dealing with people’s drinks or food items it’s important to be correct in making things and not just guess/be stuck because somebody is too scared to ask a question ab something. I will make sure to do ask questions when I first start! Thank you for your response! :)

i’m jk (mostly….) don’t get me wrong i love this job and the benefits are great but the customers are awful. they will make you go sit in the back and cry. they do not care about you and starbucks has made it to where they feel it’s okay to be shit human beings. sure it comes with all retail jobs but god it’s bad here. don’t let that scare you away though, your coworkers will be awesome and will make you feel so supported even when it’s hard. and there will be customers who just brighten your day. around the holidays we have tons of people who bake us goodies! there’s a really steep learning curve also, so just be prepared to feel like you’re drowning. i was told to give myself 3 months before feeling comfortable and 6 months to feel like i know what i’m doing, and that’s so true. i recommend using quizlet to study the drinks, i wrote the amount of syrup/shots on my hand for the sizes for like the first month. you got this! it’ll be difficult but i’ve met some of my favorite people through this job

I totally get that. But I do think the good customers make up for the bad ones :) I’ve been here just under a month and I’ve had my fair share of rude customers bht I’ve also had customers literally make me want to cry from how sweet they are.
Coolguys5 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Ah ok I get that. I’ve had my fair share with horrible customers in the past with my previous retail jobs, so I’m hoping that lightens the load a bit. I appreciate the warning though and I’m sorry that happened to you :( , customers can be real a-holes sometimes! I heard about that 3 month thing and I’m just gonna give it time (hopefully it’s no more than 3 but you never know). The quizlet technique is genius advice lol I didn’t even think about that! Thank you for your input :).
