never thought I would have to make a sign to let customers know they can’t reach across the counter and put their grubby hands on a bottle of something we charge extra for and pour it on their drink, but here we are. (i.redd.it)

You know people will still act like they can't read, especially for extra syrup
Assiqtaq 45 points 1y ago
They do for splash sticks, cup caddies, straws, and everything else. Of course they would to save eighty cents and still get what they want.
WingsofFlight 1 points 1y ago
Oh yes.
MattyScrant 106 points 1y ago
I’ve never seen a store design like yours lol. Super interesting!

But anyway, have you guys ever thought to just move it a few feet somewhere where customers won’t be able to reach it? Don’t get me wrong, I hate it when customers grab my stuff behind the bar too but if I were to walk in to your store and see the bottles the way they are, it would make me immediately think “oh, these are condiment bottles” like what you would have at a restaurant or something that you can just grab.
pickled_goblin [OP] 86 points 1y ago
we’re on a college campus! the cafe doubles as the merch store. and I just switched everything around so they can’t grabby grab! my coworker said the sign looked condescending lol
Affectionate_Fart 49 points 1y ago
The sign being “condescending” reminded me of the SBUX who posted “Closed. Someone shit on the floor >:(“ …to which I cackled.
RubySapphireSage 29 points 1y ago
I feel like customers shouldn’t even have an urge to touch drizzles ! Had a lady touch our syrup bar over the black screen that was PROTECTING it I almost suckered punch them lol.

>said the sign looked condescending

i wouldnt expect to see such a sign on a non-college location; college kids are wild aniamls and need to be contained
Pyrexiana 42 points 1y ago
I had a customer reach over our bar divider between the Mastrenas and pump vanilla syrup into his coffee and when I asked him as politely as possible not to do that he yelled “well why are they just sitting there if we can’t use them?” And I-
pickled_goblin [OP] 30 points 1y ago
this is why. this is why i’m going to snap one day and be the compelling story that Keith Morrison will be telling on dateline.
moon_light523 20 points 1y ago
I once had a lady do that and ngl I lectured her a little LOL

she reached over a plexiglass where our espresso machines are, and just took some of the stuff we have for toppings and non sugars. I just said to her “please don’t reach over into the bar and take things that are obviously not for customers to take” and she resorted “well you should have them out so we don’t have to reach over! 😡” and I just responded “you can ask a barista for it, as again, there’s a reason we don’t have them out for customers” and she just got mad and walked away.
champshere 41 points 1y ago
“Sorry it wouldn’t let me order it on the app”
pickled_goblin [OP] 44 points 1y ago
don’t forget “oh! and can I get extra drizzle on that?” AFTER they pay at the counter 🙄
ihateyousoymatcha 17 points 1y ago
Oh, that sucks. Pop over to the register and we can ring you up real quick.
pickled_goblin [OP] 33 points 1y ago
exactly. they think they’re REAL slick.
oh you just remembered you wanted sweet foam and caramel drizzle? Pay up bethany, I won’t fall for your tomfoolery.
downlbsbydw 9 points 1y ago
Points for using tomfoolery in a sentence as if it were an everyday word.
ihateyousoymatcha 38 points 1y ago
"Hi, so it's actually a health code violation for you to reach behind my bar. I'm required to file an incident report if you do it again, but you can always ask if you need something!"

I don't care if it's true but it puts the ever loving fear in most of the customers.
Enough_Raise_7167 5 points 1y ago
I feel like this should be true if it isn't...? They would be contaminating everything they touch... then again a lot of baristas don't even wash their hands 🙄
FfierceLaw 31 points 1y ago
You put white mocha in a drizzle bottle? Just relocate that stuff. Ours is between 2 mastrenas on our side of the counter
pickled_goblin [OP] 36 points 1y ago
we’re on a college campus and students request the white mocha drizzle so often!
FfierceLaw 14 points 1y ago
I’m sure our sugar craving old ladies will catch onto that
-beam-me-up- 1 points 1y ago
Omg haha I thought it was thai for a second I was about to ask where your store was located
barista-baby 2 points 1y ago
i heard the white mocha as a drizzle is really gross 😂 i have yet to try it
FfierceLaw 1 points 1y ago
I saw some TikTok baristas pulverize some dragon fruit into powder in a dry blender then mix that powder into white mocha to make a purple drizzle for a Buzz Lightyear Frappuccino
thechamelioncircuit 26 points 1y ago
A customer poured themselves more tea from a backup we had resting near the hand off plane (not on it though) and was confused when I got upset at her.
uwu420uwu 25 points 1y ago
Signs are just decorations for customers. They wont read this, only way to not have customers touch things is to move them far away unfortunately lol
Responsible_Snow7109 10 points 1y ago
Seriously lol signs are just decorations to customers. I mean during the pandemic we had stickers on the ground for where people have to stand like how far apart and it also shows how the line forms yet we still had people not standing on the round spots in line and some people also just would walk in the door and stand in a straight line instead of loop around these wicker basket things that we have which is how the line forms and people would come in and they would form the line in a correct way which cuts off the other people that were standing there before then in the incorrect area. So we had to just tell them every single day how the line forms. And by the hand off area by the bar, we had round stickers on the ground for where people should stand like away from the counter and literally people were still always standing right up against the counter trying to stare at us. Nobody reads signs
HGoddess88 22 points 1y ago
About 3 months ago There was a vanilla bottle on the side of the pastry case bc someone had just made whipped creams and the label was facing to us not the customers. This lady just comes up, uses w few pumps of vanilla in her hands and swirls them around like it was hand sanitizer 😂😂😂 omg I almost died! Then she looks at me, realizes what she did, and asks where the bathroom was! Omg it was so great
RareLingonberry 18 points 1y ago
Idk how many times I’ve had to tell customers to stop reaching their full bodies across the bar to grab straws or drink trays and just ask us for what they need.
pickled_goblin [OP] 17 points 1y ago
back when we had a plexi-glass window because of covid, we had a lil cut out square to hand drinks through. customers would reach through it and stretch their arm to grab straws and splash sticks. and I was like “hi. uhm. don’t do that.”
Enough_Raise_7167 9 points 1y ago
I had the Uber Eats person reach under the plexi and try to grab a cold lid. They touched the whole stack while trying to grab one. I told them, very loudly, to please not do that and to just ask for a lid. I don't understand the logic. They were bent down, with their face against the counter, in order to get to an angle where they could reach their arm under to reach the lids. Like, why???
jazzyaardvark 3 points 1y ago
idk how people do that when I'm so anxious that I'd rather dissolve than ask for a stopper or something
RareLingonberry 4 points 1y ago
We’ve had customers reach around and unlock our gate that blocks people from getting behind the counter and coming back to try to grab their own utensils or coffee refills. We were not busy at the time. They had not expressed any kind of need for anything. He just stood up and walked straight to the gate and unlocked it.
jazzyaardvark 4 points 1y ago
starbucks employees should be allowed to shoot one customer each month
TJW351 16 points 1y ago
I had a lady reach over the counter and grab a cinnamon powder bottle, pour it on the back of her hand, and LICK IT OFF to confirm it was in fact, cinnamon. Then she walked away with the bottle to add it to her drink at her table. She brought it back thirty minutes later after she’d finished her drink. Some people are a little clueless.
moon_light523 10 points 1y ago
naaa fuck that I would have just gone and been like “you shouldn’t have taken that from behind the bar, i’m gonna need to take that back”

that’s so ridiculous of someone to think that’s ok
pompous-pomeranian 12 points 1y ago
White mocha syrup? Never seen that before.
pickled_goblin [OP] 10 points 1y ago
I work at a cafe serving starbucks drinks that’s on a college campus, and a TON of kids request white drizz!
Affectionate_Fart 8 points 1y ago
Makes sense…it’s college and WM looks like cum…lol
Electrical_Metal_106 2 points 1y ago
Jizzle 😆
SunBusiness8291 9 points 1y ago
That's an invitation. It's like leaving a dog treat on the edge of the counter and telling him not to eat it. Probably find a different place for them.
Torirock10 6 points 1y ago
🤦‍♀️ ppl r crazy
SunflowerTeaTime 5 points 1y ago
At the beginning of the pandemic before the plexiglass shields I literally watched a man turn a syrup bottle and pump it into his hand because he thought it was sanitizer…
tellovisions 5 points 1y ago
Placement of the drizzles could be better.
dessdot 3 points 1y ago
We moved everything away from the counter because not only would they reach and grab it, but they’d act offended and get snippy when told to just ask us/to please not touch.
chamomilehugs 3 points 1y ago
Yooooo white mocha drizzle!!! I woulda never thought 😋
DecompressionIllness 3 points 1y ago
We've tried that. Doesn't work. Sometimes we have a sign at the counter, positioned so that it's directly in the customer's face when they order, that says "takeaway only". Very few people read it.
SoraSeul 2 points 1y ago
Just place it else where, People will continue to be people regardless of what you say to them
Straight_Swordfish_1 2 points 1y ago
how about moving it where customers cant reach
OakTreeTrash 3 points 1y ago
Not always possible and not always the baristas choice.
bitch-baby-2021 2 points 1y ago
why does it sit on the counter where customers might think it's okay to use it? if i saw that even i would be like oh look extra drizzle bottles to use...
pickled_goblin [OP] 3 points 1y ago
we have literally no room anywhere. the counters are filled to the brim. I moved them around so nobody could reach them, but we literally have it up on a sign that drizzle costs extra. we have the sauces next our other toppings. not to mention, the woman who did it today literally had to stretch across the counter to reach them. like, nah. you’d have to be stupid to see all that and think they were for customer use lol.
jazzysoranio 2 points 1y ago
Agreed. But I would add that this is more corporate/Schultz’s fault since he’s the one who had all the glass walls around the bars taken down because he wanted to increase customer “connection.” Yeah, connecting customer’s germs to each other’s drinks. How many other restaurants and cafes have you ever seen where ingredients are just sitting out right there within customers’ reach.
Enough_Raise_7167 4 points 1y ago
There are stores without glass surrounding the bars?? Whyyyyy? That's so gross. I would lose my mind if I was on bar and there was no glass to protect me from those animals.
jazzysoranio 3 points 1y ago
Most stores are that way. I travel across the country and I’ve only seen a couple stores in California that still had glass walls up.
Enough_Raise_7167 3 points 1y ago
I just don't see how not having a barrier is sanitary.
jazzysoranio 3 points 1y ago
Exactly. It isn’t!
darkwolf523 2 points 1y ago
I bet 10$ people still do it though
WaluigiToast 1 points 1y ago
Ooh, White Mocha Drizzle? How do you ring that up on the Register?
pickled_goblin [OP] 2 points 1y ago
we just have a button for any extra drizzle charge. We aren’t an official sbux, just a cafe serving starbucks beverages. like at barnes and noble!
WaluigiToast 2 points 1y ago
Oh, gotcha! And hey, you're official in our hearts!

You probably deal with a lot of nonsense licenses stores don't have to, so keep fighting the good fight!

...Unless you want to quit. Then I hope you find greener pastures.
sero5074 1 points 1y ago
White mocha drizzle…?
SeparateAd3473 1 points 1y ago
Lol this is funny because In my store when we hand off drinks in our cafe the straws are actually accessible behind the hand off and the customers will ask me for a straw while staring at the straws like there’s a force field there only the baristas can penetrate. I’ve had to tell customers they’re free to grab a straw if I’m preoccupied. Completely opposite problem 😂
mely15 1 points 1y ago
what’s the white sauce? we don’t have it in Australia
WingsofFlight 1 points 1y ago
We recently took down some of our plastic covers (UK) from around our bar/ hand off area. And argh, I miss them. People keep sticking their hands, heads and all sorts into our bar area. The other day? Someone reached over and grabbed the Cinnamon powder shaker. I politely asked them to ask me next time, took it back after they were done and had to wash it.
makmelaf17 1 points 1y ago
That's sad but so true
Detantevandaisy 1 points 1y ago
I almost slapped a customer once for reaching their claws onto my lids. It was an act of defense and I apologized immediately because I did it without realizing what the hell I was doing 😭 hope she learned never to touch our shit again
Sahalio 1 points 1y ago
Capitalism! Haha I personally would give them for free and not charge them lol
pickled_goblin [OP] 7 points 1y ago
1. It’s mostly the entitlement to just grab things that bother me.
2. We are a cafe on a college campus run by a food company that is contracted by the college. When students use their dining dollars, we do not make a ton of profit. We have been in the negative almost every week this past month.
When we’re in the negative, guess who gets their hours cut? 🥰🥰🥰
I’m anti-capitalist, but trying to survive capitalism too, and need hours so I can pay rent and eat food.
So yeah, I’m going to ask that people pay the extra 80 fucking cents.
Sahalio 0 points 1y ago
Lel that won’t change much imo. They could just raise prices or put more effort on baristas honestly. That’s just my opinion and I understand your point.
pickled_goblin [OP] 5 points 1y ago
almost every single student asks for drizzle. let’s say I make 200 drinks a day (I usually do) and 150 ask for extra drizzle.
i cut the charge, 150 x .85 = 127.50. if I do that every day for a week? that’s almost $900.
that’s twice what I make in a week.
Shit adds up, Capitalism won’t fix itself over night, and i’d rather not be made to feel bad for not wanting to disappoint my boss because i’m the one running the cafe, so it’s my responsibility.
Necessary_Low939 1 points 1y ago
I love these older bottles. And watch them
Not read the sign p
