anyone else's sm making you keep the drive thru camera on?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by anonbiotch01
It's literally driving me insane. There's no customer connection like they say there will be and i just get to look at my ugly face all day. Ugh
PriparaParadise105 points1y ago
what?!?! that’s so crazy and uncomfortable
Dzfranken1 points1y ago
Why is it any different than serving a customer in the cafe in terms of uncomfortableness
moldyhotpocket13 points1y ago
talking face to face and interacting through a camera is so different. people dont go through drive thru expecting to see the order takers face pop up on the screen, its weird. they dont even realize we can see them half the time too so it makes it awkward most of the time.
Dzfranken1 points1y ago
All it is doing is removing a barrier of connection to be honest with you. Just need to get used to people getting the same experience in the drive-through as they do in the cafe. There are other companies that do face-to-face ordering through video. If you don't like it brace yourself for the future.
moldyhotpocket4 points1y ago
I mean, alot of other companies don’t though? All i can think of is like, chic fil a or something. i just think (esp from a customers pov), drive thru isnt really meant to be face to face. they want it to be quick and non-confrontational.
PriparaParadise5 points1y ago
some people don’t like being seen on camera. when you’re in the cafe, there are other people and things around you, but on camera, you’re the only person. it’s like being the one person who has their google meet camera on
Dzfranken0 points1y ago
I think it's just your perception but perception is reality so for you this is the truth. However there are still things around for them to get distracted by just because your face is on a video screen and not in person in front of you doesn't put anymore focus on you. If anything it keeps the customers engaged and ordering instead of goofing off in the car or scrolling through their phone.. I literally have people pull up to my drive-through and scroll through their phone for 30 seconds finishing their IG or whatever and then they say OK I'm ready
PriparaParadise3 points1y ago
ok? not everyone enjoys being on camera lol it’s not that deep
spicedtear53 points1y ago
me and i always look like 👁👄👁
notrachelmar39 points1y ago
haha i work at an older store so there’s no screen outside so i am thankful
anonbiotch01 [OP]5 points1y ago
Omg i wish
idkwhothisisbutokay26 points1y ago
id hate it if my sm ever did that to us. i feel uncomfortable and ugly enough as is going thru drive at my store while i’m off lmao. i definitely would not want custy’s to see my face as i’m taking their order in drive.
accountedthrowaway520 points1y ago
that is the craziest thing ive ever heard….
betsylang17 points1y ago
Not all the time. Generally it's during peak w 2 in drive, and luckily my sm is never really on the floor- doing v important manager stuff I'm sure- so I generally ignore it.
Similar_Ad28914 points1y ago
when I used to work for sbux my sm and an ssv tried rlly hard to push it and say it was required but another worker and I fought it and there's absolutely nothing they could find to prove that we /had/ to do that so they eventually stopped requiring it
muddywun12 points1y ago
Yes! And I’ve noticed I look like I’m rolling my eyes when I look at the screen with the times on it 😭
anonbiotch01 [OP]5 points1y ago
No because same!! I'll be looking up at the times and orders and it looks like I'm rolling my eyes 😭😭😭
dystopidrip12 points1y ago
no because my store is older and doesn’t have a screen, but i worked at a store for a few shifts that did this and it was the most uncomfortable thing in the world lol
chronic_life10 points1y ago
We put a sticker over our camera lol
Remarkable_Hold_234210 points1y ago
No?? We turn it on out of no where as a joke sometimes but we aren’t forced to keep it on.
sammieduck694202 points1y ago
I would totally do that
Levinem7179 points1y ago
I’ve experienced this both as a barista and a customer. From the barista perspective it’s awkward, but I don’t see how it’s different from someone seeing you in the window. As a customer, it made the experience better for me. I’m not sure what to make of it. But I hate how when you voice that you’re uncomfortable and you give valid reasons, SM’s will still tell you to turn the camera on.
BeardiesRule11210 points1y ago
It’s in our training that you can refuse any jobs you’re uncomfortable with. Start using it.
Levinem7175 points1y ago
Exactly! Why can’t we say no to the camera? I’m not against the camera, but I’m against being forced to use it.
BeardiesRule1123 points1y ago
You absolutely can say no, that’s what I’m trying to convey!
Levinem7172 points1y ago
Oh I see, I thought that the manager was adamant that the camera must remain on.
Significant_Sound_179 points1y ago
Ugh my SM does the same it gives me so much anxiety and I hate seeing how awful I look! Plus we have had customers sexual harass us just from seeing our face on the screen.
anonbiotch01 [OP]5 points1y ago
That's terrible :( I'm so sorry
sweet-seat5 points1y ago
i wish our camera worked like that when i was a barista. id pop up and be like peekaboo what can we get for u

bestowcurse4 points1y ago
Yo wtf....
badatlife153 points1y ago
No, I do turn it on sometimes when customers that i recognize from the screen and start telling them their order get weirded out, so I figure if I can see them I return the favor to show them they can see me lol.
Lyelacks3 points1y ago
That would make me so ridiculously uncomfy, so sorry you’re dealing with that!
xxbleeding_outxx2 points1y ago
its not efficient if theres only one person on drive because usually im turning off my headset and cashing someone out while im listening to the next order, especially during peak or a mid shift in general!!
It_is_Katy2 points1y ago
lmao my sm put a sticker over the inside camera because she thinks it's stupid.
I'm so sorry your sm is like that, ew
80sserialkiller2 points1y ago
the customer would just see the wall cause our DTO is always running around doing other shit while taking orders. the one time i used the camera was on accident and i said “help! help!” over the headset cause i didnt know how to turn it off.
kamrissoon2 points1y ago
If I'm remembering correctly it used to be standard for peak I think but a while back they changed it to not being a standard and it was a big deal cause we all hated it. I can't imagine them forcing you to use it is entirely ethical....
xovilloxo2 points1y ago
not my SM but my DM does 🥴
joshberry7772 points1y ago
No. It's literally them having a "power trip"...
[deleted]2 points1y ago
yup 🙃
rlogranite1 points1y ago
Just turn it off
ittybittybakerkitty1 points1y ago
No but it's also too high up and if we move the screen down for the camera to see me the dto screen goes black so if we did turn on the camera they'll just get straight forehead
skinniestbarista1 points1y ago
if you press settings beside the outside camera view, you can disable the camera 😉
ProfessionalRock79401 points1y ago
My sm mentioned that the dm wants us to start doing it but idkkkk

anonbiotch01 [OP]1 points1y ago
I know, it's so pointless
Kimmikkokat1 points1y ago
Yes but not rn, cuz our outside screen is broken. But typically yes. It's more annoying, but you can technically wear your mask there to make it less awkward with the customers seeing your face.
kittykat-kay1 points1y ago
Oh god oh please no I can’t stand that thing

Nah friendo it seems like a punishment because we aren't well taken care of and protected in the workplace but also sometimes it takes spoons to exist with other people but especially yourself. Some people are just not comfortable with that and that's ok. Like. Dysphoria and bodily dismorphia are real things that can and should be taken into account here idk. But it's not just that. Yes it is a drive thru, yes corporate wants high connection - but if I wanted to really connect with someone I would do it IN CAFE, where I could actually take the time to connect with my barista, as opposed to holding up the line talking the tea.
anonbiotch01 [OP]1 points1y ago
Thank you. I have extreme body dysmorphia and the cameras do not help it one bit.
anonbiotch01 [OP]10 points1y ago
It has not made any good connections at my store at all. And idk what about my post made you so hostile but you can tone it down thank you .
Levinem7171 points1y ago
They weren’t hostile at all.
anonbiotch01 [OP]1 points1y ago
Ok thats your opinion
StefaniRose820-1 points1y ago
It’s not meant to be hostile at all. I’m genuinely sorry if it came off that way. Trying to give some info on why it’s important and how to help, but I could see how it sounds aggressive. Genuinely didn’t mean it.
It_is_Katy0 points1y ago
how's that corporate boot taste, buddy?
StefaniRose820-2 points1y ago
I honestly don’t understand the hostility I’m receiving now. Did you all not sign up for the job? Is someone holding a gun to your head and forcing you to work? You sign up for the job you choose. If you don’t like the way any company runs not just Starbucks don’t work there. Don’t give them the satisfaction to run you down and make you uncomfortable. I was offering some advice from someone who’s worked in many different coffee shop scenarios. Been brand new, was manager at a small family business, and everything in between. It has NOTHING to do with licking corporate boots and everything to do with taking care of my peers, so I can try to help people through or hopefully avoid the breakdowns this company gives people, but go ahead and be a bully because you don’t like that I didn’t just jump on the down with cameras train. You’re truly horrible people who are only here to complain and hate on people who may actually be suited for this job and make them feel bad about that fact.
It_is_Katy2 points1y ago
I actually love my job lol. I'm just not under the delusion that things like drive times and customer connections are anything more than corporate bullshit.
StefaniRose820-2 points1y ago
I’m not saying it’s not corporate bullshit. It 100% is. It means NOTHING in the grand scheme of things and managers only push it cause it directly affects their bonuses. These aren’t things that are hidden if you ask questions or do the research, but it’s still part of the job you applied and signed up for. Just because it’s corporate bullshit doesn’t mean anyones entitled to not do their job. Like If you personally didn’t like the coffee smells that doesn’t mean you can just not be on hot bar and only make refreshers. That’s not how jobs work. You need to find a work around to make yourself okay doing the job that’s asked of you, or don’t and get reprimanded. It’s a process that’s been in place literally since society and jobs became a thing. that all aside I’m a straightforward person I say things like they are, and I acknowledged that my original comment could have come across aggressively and apologized, but I meant it as one peer helping another try to find another way of looking at things to help with the anxiety….but I guess from your comment, and in most stores from the sound of it only cooperate bootlickers, or managers try to help out their fellow partners. I just don’t understand the point any of you trying to make by using those as an insult. I’m literally so over this whining and I’m sorry I tried to offer a different perspective in the first place.
