dumb question but are the managers allowed to vote on unionization? Is that why it seems like theres always at least a few no votes ?
Sunrae29 [OP] 29 points 1y ago
Managers aren’t allowed to vote however I think assistant managers are able to. The no votes we had I’m pretty sure were from older partners. They made it very clear they would vote no lol

fair... follow up question any advise on how to pull together baristas for unionization if youre somewhat new? Ive been w starbucks almost a year but was forced to transfer or get 5 hours a week... the new stores partners are great but I dont have the connection I did for unionization to feel like it would work
Sunrae29 [OP] 8 points 1y ago
I’m so sorry to hear that!! If you have anyone that you’re close to there I would suggest maybe mentioning it to them and seeing how they feel. We started with a small group of people in our store and then slowly began asking others what their thoughts were. It will take time but just keep working towards it!

awesome thank you

Why do you think the older partners were against it? If anything they’ve had to put up with the most/longest crappy treatment over the years

Also congratulations to you guys!!!

Propaganda and a vicious anti-union campaign across the US. Union membership fell in the 1980s to 2000s as employers began screening for union sympathizers and frequently employing anti-union firms. The NLRB and DOL don't address violations quickly enough, so people burned by unfair labor practices or know someone who did leave with the misdirected impression that the unionizing is what caused it, not illegal behavior from their employer as a result of unionizing.

And Reagan. Just. Reagan. Republican president that utterly fucking neutered unions by both actions and anti-union appointments to both the NLRB and the DOL. As a result, anti-union sentiments (especially among conservatives) became far, far more common.

I've seen 40+ y/o baristas struggling to survive argue that minimum wage shouldn't increase. There's no logic, just propaganda and fear.

This is why I've been arguing that minimum wage should be based on the revenue of the company. It's not fair to charge a minimum wage across the board for every company because some companies can't afford it because they're too small. But if they made it based on revenue, and had to supply a certain amount of hours to employees (not cutting hours to make up for the wage increase), then it would be fair. Not sure if it's worth the time or if someone in Congress has already tried to push for something like this, but if they don't know, it'd be a good idea to contact your senators about it. Although, that's assuming the corruption doesn't run that deep...

from what ive heard the unions offer no more support then what we were already getting, so whats gonna change for you guys now?
Sunrae29 [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Our next step is going to be to go into collective bargaining. With that we are able to negotiate the things that we want in this union. We would never agree to terms that were the same or worse than they are now. It may take some time but we are hopeful :)
gemi-high 2 points 1y ago
i hate that i just cant know 100% which what the truths are, i believe everything im being told but it still seems like the unions are in the right but my starbucks isnt ready to go down that path yet. we actually have a good boss who said if we did she wouldnt be mad or like try to stop us. still a very big decision.
Sunrae29 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Definitely a big decision to make for sure!! I would just suggest taking your time and researching whether your store plans to unionize or not. Knowledge is power my friend :)

We’ll see you in 2-3 years when you actually reach an agreement…😂

Helping to ruin a company. But Starbucks was doing that itself ...so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
