Now let me explain, I’m not anti tipshare. I just wish that if a customer handed you a tip specifically for you, you were allowed to keep it.
Yesterday I had a group of 3 ladies come in, they ordered a couple of drinks, 1 being a coffee with hazelnut syrup and cream. I made the drink exactly how the sticker said and went about making the other 2 drinks for the order. The first lady asked for a cup of cream and I smiled and gave it to her, she added some to her coffee and I could tell something was off. She explained it was her first time having syrup in her coffee and she didn’t like it so I offered another cup of coffee with no syrup. I made it, leaving a bit of space for her cream and handed it to her. You could tell right away that the new cup was exactly what she was wanting. She handed me a $5 saying for you and headed on with her day. It just seems unfair that she specifically meant it for me but it would have to be split, at least at my store you have to put it in the tip jar or you get written up.
Another thing: what if you work a day with really good tippers and a minimum crew and the next day is really crappy tippers and a full staff, like that seems unfair bc the minimum crew day is working just as hard if not harder than the full crew and they are getting the same tips.
Don’t even get me started on the people who barely work but still get tips. I’m sorry but the tip share system is broken.

Well... Then people who are the most tenured and relied on partners (bar regulars) wouldn't be making any tips... And people would always claim tips are directly for them while they work window and front.
If you want tips directly they to be signed and sealed w/ your name.

Team tips is team tips.

That’s not my problem. It’s when they hand a specific person a tip saying “for you”. We shouldn’t have to give it to the top share.

you literally are complaining about tip share lol. do the people who helped prep the coffee and the syrup and everything you used to make the drink not deserve tips just bc you were the one who helped this lady one on one? like come on

First off, I was the one who peeped the syrup during my last shift, I know that bc it was my handwriting on the bottle bc people at my store can’t write in neat cursive. But that’s not the problem. Problem is, if someone specifically hands you a top saying it’s for you, you should be allowed to keep it.

the point stands idgaf if you were the one who put the syrup out or not. if someone on window started taking tips handed to them just bc they were nice no bar partner or cs partner would ever make any tip money. it's tip sharing for a reason and you're being selfish and inconsiderate of the work other partners do to make your interaction even possible

Everyone deserves tips. People who “barely” work, still work and can still get tipped, just like you did, in the small hours they work.
The_tired_barista [OP]0 points1y ago
It’s not that. It’s the people who come to work and barely do anything.

It's $5. Do you really care that much?
If it's a substantial tip, and they want it to go directly to you, they just need to put it in an envelope with your name on it. We have this happen a lot with regulars tipping their favorite baristas 20s and 50s during the holidays

It’s not about the money per day. It’s about if I’m going above and beyond while others don’t do shit and I’m constantly having to coach them on what to do next when they have worked there longer than me, I should be allowed to keep the tips people specifically mean ti give me and only me.

I'm just putting it out there that if the customers really cared enough to tip specifically, they can do that.
Yes, some days generate more tips than others. If your store divides them by hours, the difference is negligible. If you feel you're working harder and therefore deserve more, talk to your SM about it.
If you're relying on tips to supplement your income, there are easier jobs paying the same in most of the US right now. And with everything going on, a lot of them can offer more hours

When a guy gives tip directly to me when I’m not on he register I take that shit. It’s mine.
