A fellow partner told me we are only required to work one weekend day a week. I’ve worked every sat and sun since I started. Is this true? If so how do I bring this up to my manager?(self.starbucksbaristas)

We're not REQUIRED to work either actually

It’s all about your availability and the business needs of the store. A lot of managers I know try to give full time partners one weekend day off, but usually part timers or students tend to work both weekend days because that’s where you’ll get more hours. You can talk to your manager about changing your availability to only have one weekend day but know that if it affects the business needs (i.e. if they now have to hire another person who can fill those weekend gaps) it could be denied or your hours could be affected.

I’m supposed to be full time. My manager promised 40 hours when I started but I’ve been getting like 30-35 so idk what to do or to even bother
Ordinary-Theory-828919 points1y ago
FYI 35 hours is considered full time
mekayla96 [OP]4 points1y ago
Yeah I know but I specifically asked during my interview if she had 40 hours and she said she definitely did.
Cool_ginge_12033 points1y ago
They always say that and it’s never true. I was guaranteed 24 minimum and have been getting 16-19. The work quality of Starbucks has gone to shit the last 6 months unfortunately
hufflepuffisonfleek3 points1y ago
The company as a whole is trying to cut down on hours, so that could be the issue your seeing with the hours.
poisonwritings2 points1y ago
unionize and your store will need to give you what they guaranteed 😏
Ordinary-Theory-828913 points1y ago
There’s no policy about which days you have to work or have off. Plenty of people who ONLY work the weekends. If it’s an issue for you to work both days, you’re free to change your availability or just talk to your SM that you would appreciate having one of the 2 days off every week
Popperz4Brekkie8 points1y ago
Don’t bring it up to manager. Just submit a new availability and when they ask why, say something like “I got a second job and can’t work weekends”
Noobplzforgive11 points1y ago
Just say you found God and gotta go to church. If you want Saturday off tell them you're now a seventh day Adventist. If you want Sundays off, say you're now a devoted christian and gotta be at church all day.
hoewenn7 points1y ago
They can be Jewish if they want Saturdays off lol
TarantulaTeeth133 points1y ago
And Friday’s off, just say you have to go to masjid 🤷🏼♀️
overturned231 points1y ago
if you want saturday off, just say you’re jewish and you’re celebrating shabbos
Popperz4Brekkie1 points1y ago
Yes. I like this one too
prhamm8 points1y ago
I wouldn't recommend saying you got a second job, a lot of SMs will reeeeeally kill your hours if you say that. But submitting new availability is a great idea!
Popperz4Brekkie-5 points1y ago
Not true, but ok.
sammieduck694203 points1y ago
No- it’s true. You’d be surprised how many management people are there to basically exploit you. Even if you have a good manager, being told that you have another job just gets in the way of your availability for that job and just isn’t great. So if you have another job and your new availability affects my business, you’re out to go to your “new” or “other” job while I find someone to take over here. It’s not great- but that’s the work environment… *especially retail*
Popperz4Brekkie-9 points1y ago
Actually, no.
prhamm1 points1y ago
I mean that was just my experience. You might have a better SM than I did!
Necessary_Low9394 points1y ago
Yeah I don’t work any weekends. If u have open availability I can see why u are scheduled. Does it bother u that u are scheduled?
mekayla96 [OP]2 points1y ago
Yeah I have open availability and I’ve asked like several times to have as many hours as possible. But my coworker acted like I shouldn’t be working both days. I don’t really care as long as I’m getting 40 hours but lately they’ve been around 30 so 🥲
Necessary_Low9393 points1y ago
There’s nothing wrong with working weekends. It’s just those who want weekends off. As for u, u sound like u just wanna work in general. So just ignore him. I don’t work weekends because I have a full time job elsewhere.
ilholtstilin1 points1y ago
This is the weirdest nonexistent rule I’ve ever heard of in this sub and that’s saying a shit ton. Just set your availability when you want to work bro 😂
Murder-of-Crows81 points1y ago
Change your availability - Request specific days off in advance (ie every third Saturday) - Look it up in your HUB - Don’t go by what other partners tell you if you don’t think it’s correct, maybe they don’t really know - Talk to your SM
TarantulaTeeth131 points1y ago
If you want weekends off, just change your availability. 🤷🏼♀️ you might lose hours tho. Maybe offer to switch with some people as well?
iWonderWahl1 points1y ago
Store Managers set those requirements.
medusas-garden1 points1y ago
I worked basically every Saturday and Sunday for two years w Starbucks. I asked if I could have saturdays off since my SM needed me on sundays as a morning ssv and she basically told me no. Corporate doesn’t have any scheduling requirements, it’s down to each stores specific needs.
persona-21 points1y ago
Maybe it’s because most SMs won’t accept an availability that doesn’t have at least 1 weekend day? There is no actual rule to weekends though.
FWshift1 points1y ago
I ask for every other weekend day off so for instance I had Saturday off this week, so I’ll have Sunday off next week. Weekends at Starbucks suck, and For a bit at my old store the only SSV working weekends was me and the morning chick. After a month of that, they are lucky they get one weekend day out of me lol
icelessTrash1 points1y ago
I don't think Starbucks has any guarantees or rules like that for scheduling.
Though at union grocery licensed locations, there are negotiated contracts that have concrete rules to allow better scheduling, which the employer must follow. Things like having one preferred day off per employee (like could be always Saturdays, but it's still subject to manager approval for which day that is, not everyone can pick the same day, obvi), or (a newer contract inclusion)selecting from available shifts based on seniority, and other things like overtime for part of your shift if 2 shifts are less than 10 hours apart, etc. Business needs and assigning unclaimed shifts still allow management to adjust and finalize the schedule as needed, but gives some collaboration and control to employees. But sometimes lower seniority employees end up pushed around more and with less hours (Though then maybe it will incentivize people to come in when others call out, --instead of issues of everyone saying no, that I've heard about-- as they build seniority).

i work 3 days a week. then again, i guess im a high schooler. lol
juju4831 points1y ago
So technically not required to work any. You just have to change your availability. Keep in mind, though, this will probably reduce your hours and they can deny availability requests.
