embarrassing to admit but i’ve been working at starbucks for almost 7 months and haven’t signed up for benefits i can’t tell you why i really don’t have an excuse but i have a question if anyone knows. i have huge tonsils it’s bad my doctor always told my mom to take them out when i was little because they were going to bother me in the future and now they are. would signing up for health care be able to cover for my tonsil surgery? and if so i would be able to get time off work right? i know this sounds dumb but it’s my first job and i’m not really sure how any of this works or if i’m even eligible for health care yet. i might have to quit soon but i was hoping to get this done before i did so i’m also wondering if it would take long.

You'd have to wait until October for the enrollment period and to be eligible you need to have had an average of 20hours per week in the previous 6 months. And after that you can chose the kind of plan that would work best to cover the surgery but to get the leave of absence you need to be with the company for a year. I don't think it's a surgery that would require that though. You can probably just request the time off for the surgery and recovery and use your sick pay.

You are eligible for benefits once you’ve worked 240 hours, however, you are only eligible if you work an average of 20 hours a week! If you have worked a minimum of 20 hours a week then you would’ve been able to unroll after working at Starbucks for 3 months.

They send out an email that will let you know when you finally eligible to unroll for Starbucks Benefits. If you didn’t get any email you can visit http://mysbuxben.ca/ and register, (only partners who are benefits eligible will be able to register and access the site.) Once you are registered and logged in, select Enroll to begin the process. The option to enroll is only accessible during your enrollment period, or during the annual open enrollment period which is usually 3 weeks in August for an effective date of October 1st.

You can select different health care packages depending on how much coverage you’re looking for, the more coverage you want the more they’ll take off of each of your paycheques.
It would be worth looking into, I’m not sure if they’d cover all expenses of your surgery or if it would be a high percentage of it. Once registered you could call the Insurance Company and inquire!

For time off, you would just need to book the amount of time off for your recovery & talk to your SM with any questions you have about paid time off. Where I live we get 5 paid sick days a year so if that applies to you then you could go that route, or there is always vacation hours🙂

You can get the best answer by calling the benefits support center at 888-SBUX-BEN. They can look up your info and tell you exactly when you might be able to get insurance. However, it's unlikely that you'd be able to get coverage in the next 2-3 months. If you need to make plans for surgery soon, you might have to look at other options for insurance on $1. Health insurance is horrendously complicated so if you're new to the process, you might want to do some research and watch some explainer videos $1, or ask someone you know and trust to help you.

Once you have insurance, the insurance company decides what to cover. (Starbucks deals with many different insurance companies, and your options will be different depending on where you live.) Any of them will probably cover your surgery **if** it's deemed medically necessary, but the cost you end up paying can vary a lot, which is why it helps to do research

In general, for Starbucks benefits, you become eligible by working 240 hours over 3 full consecutive months. After that, you get a letter in the mail inviting you to enroll, but they'll give you a deadline. If you miss the deadline, you can't do anything until the company-wide enrollment period every August, and at that point you wouldn't actually have insurance until October. (If you call the benefits center, they can tell you where you stand here.)

Once you schedule your surgery, it's best to request time off at least 3 weeks in advance, just like if you were going on vacation. But if you don't get time off approved in advance, you're still allowed to miss work for necessary doctor visits, which this would obviously be.

Good luck!
