Does anyone else feel like we don’t get paid enough to make customer connections? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by xylophonezygote
Like I’m barely making rent, we’re getting just a bit more than minimum wage, I really don’t feel compelled to break my back talking to strangers who hate me

There is zero motivation to connect with customers. Our tips are pooled and a lot of them take it as sexual interest. Management putting giant signs everywhere with store connection scores and a list of demands related to it certainly isn't motivating. Especially when everyone knows the reason the customers are rating low is because daddy bux raises the prices every other month. No amount of "How was your weekend?" is going to make them feel better about a $7 latte.
cookiemonstah87 48 points 1y ago
Running out of everything all the time, sometimes for weeks at a time, sure doesn't help, either

Months*
mylilyaurora 119 points 1y ago
I’m really friendly and kind. I have customers that tell me things waaay above my pay grade. I help when I can but when I come home I crack. Most recent one being me comforting a woman who’s husband just found out he has terminal cancer. It’s too much for me without proper training
abandon_hopeless 65 points 1y ago
We have a regular with some memory and other general mental health issues and whenever she comes in she will just trauma dump to whoever will listen. There is always a huge lineup when she's at the register because she just will not stop talking. Today i heard about her friend whose in the hospital dying, about how she's in credit card debt, about how she has a spiteful ex who put condoms in her radiator, has no family that cares about her, etc.

We do not get paid enough
Furiosa_xo 15 points 1y ago
My store (Drive Thru only) has two regular customers (a married couple) that are older and just....same story. I think it's more physical health than mental health, but every time they come, it's a long narrative about their recent health problems, hospitalizations, financial problems, etc. They can be really nice guys, but it's just a lot because every time they are at the window other customers are waiting and waiting. I know they are older and slower, so I try to be patient, but every time they come through it's a long ordeal, and then they aren't sure about how much money is on their app, and then they feel like they reloaded money last time but it isn't there, and then they feel like they are missing stars, and then ...you get the picture. I feel bad for them, I really do, but it's a lot. One of them once followed me to the trash dumpster shed to tell me in detail about his diarrhea and colon problems.
mylilyaurora 10 points 1y ago
Dude… that sucks
strangeyeena 18 points 1y ago
I literally had a conversation with a woman who was telling me she was gonna go visit her dead father the other day. It was terribly awkward and uncomfortable. I hope I didn’t say anything that made her upset. I absolutely hate customer connections.
banannon999 6 points 1y ago
I feel that. Broke my heart when we ran out of blueberry scones thanksgiving day and she says that was going to be her thanksgiving dinner.
FfierceLaw 84 points 1y ago
It's called Emotional Labor and it's much harder than crafting a beverage or operating a POS. It should be highly compensated
luv_u_bb 80 points 1y ago
i find it so funny that we are expected to care about customer connection scores and drive times. like what do i get out of it? nothing! lol why would i bust my ass for nothing
borrowedurmumsvcard 46 points 1y ago
exactly. why *should* I give a fuck. do I get an incentive? no. do I get a raise or a bonus? no. do I keep getting bullied by 40 year old toddlers? yuh
badatlife15 7 points 1y ago
And they literally contradict each other. Make connections, but make them fast. 🙄
im_feeling_cold 74 points 1y ago
i’m a shift and yet i can barely be assed to do this. i normally only do it when the customer initiates the connection, and i’ll only reciprocate if it’s not a creepy feeling encounter.
J-cat_loves_dogs14 6 points 1y ago
If my initial interaction with them keeps ending in one word answers, they don’t want to talk so i cash them out and wait for their stuff to be ready, i am not trying to make conversation.
lilly260_ 69 points 1y ago
i used to do it but it took too much out of me if i was on window for awhile. i’ll just greet them, say the total, say thank you, and tell them their drink will be out in a second. we do not get paid enough to initiate full conversations car to car. also the way they score is so dumb. it’s random and 1/2 the time the complainants at my store are about how horrible our drive thru set up is, its not our fault it used to be a bank.
BatWeary 14 points 1y ago
same here. our store used to be a bank also, and all i ever hear is “your drive thru set up is awful” from every damn customer. I KNOW. STOP TELLING ME.
cookiemonstah87 5 points 1y ago
This is exactly what I do. Aldo doesn't help that I can rarely hear the customer over the window fan, so that's my excuse
Glittering-Charge-83 36 points 1y ago
it’s literally impossible. normally there’s a whole LINE behind them AND everyone expects the dt times to be immaculate. there’s 0 time for customer connections unless you’re okay with holding up the line behind you, cutting off your conversation to take the next order, and having your dt times in the red. there’s no time.
BatWeary 18 points 1y ago
i do the “smile and nod” move when a customer insists on telling me their life story while my headset is dinging and the people at the box are like “HELLOOOOO?”
Glittering-Charge-83 4 points 1y ago
the “HELLO??!!??!!?!” is the WORST
badatlife15 15 points 1y ago
Our SM likes to give us an update of how our CC scores and Drive times were each week. This week she was so proud because our CC was much higher than it has been, but concerned because our times were going up a bit. Like no shit Sherlock if we’re trying to connect and also have labor cut our times are going to go down. You can’t have it all.
SeparateAd3473 21 points 1y ago
Lately I’m so mentally, emotionally, and physically drained I’m not in my normal bubbly mood. Months of working two jobs and saving every single penny I can has drained the life out of me. I wouldn’t mind talking to people but I am introverted and really trying to conserve my energy now. I’m considering looking for something else but I feel like I’m trapped because I need the flexibility for school. 🥲 even when I get that raise to 15 I’m not sure if it’s enough.
godskrimp 20 points 1y ago
I literally do not look at anyone in our lobby if i can help it. My store is so busy people (custies and workers) will actively get mad at you if you are talking with people instead of making drinks/food or taking orders.

The moment i dont have to complete a 3 drink 3 food order in 30sec is the moment i start trying to talk to the custies.
marilynmansonsbitch 18 points 1y ago
our cc score went up by like 20 points in the last month or so and my manager told me today we were going to have a pizza party bc of it

i just thought it was so comedy like im really living in a meme world
richayy420 3 points 1y ago
We always get a pizza party when our customer connection score is really good, I literally look forward to it too 😂
Minute-General-2090 18 points 1y ago
yes. I get told constantly by my co-workers and manager to "connect with customers" and yet, I know dang well that my lack of hours doesn't pay me well enough to have a connection with customers. The only ones I make are with the regulars which is only three out of 9 because the rest are quiet or assholes. but yes, my paycheck doesn't cover me making connections plus, why? they want their coffee and to get out. most customers hate small talk and ignore you. it's basically putting your neck out for customers to chop it off for nothing.
EarthLaser 21 points 1y ago
I was bored at work so I was reading reviews of our store. We had a one star review from someone complaining that the cashier asked too many questions and that they came in for a coffee not an interview. Customer connections is clumsy metric for assessing the quality of our customer service.
cookiemonstah87 5 points 1y ago
I'm this customer. I know it's the person's job so I'm not going to complain about them specifically or anything (hell, i try to leave positive feedback for service workers whenever I can/remember) but I might actually go out of my way to tell higher ups of a given company that I REALLY don't like it when people use my real name or try to get to friendly with me when I've offered no information willingly. The name especially. Somewhere like a coffee shop or a restaurant waiting for a table, sure. You gotta ask my name so you can get my attention. That's fine, they asked for my name, and I gave it to them. But if I'm at Target or something and they just read it off my card when i pay, it feels so icky. I didn't tell you my name, reading it off of something I had no choice but to give you feels like my personal space is being violated.

I despise name tags for this reason and I love that Starbucks name tags are hand-written so I can make mine ever so slightly difficult to read and people won't typically get creepy about using it.
Pyrexiana 15 points 1y ago
This is what bugs me the most about being constantly told I need to connect with customers more- like have you considered that the customer who is staring at their phone and standing as far away from the counter as possible while waiting for their drink does not at all want to make small talk about how their day is going and where they work?
Responsible_Snow7109 4 points 1y ago
Exactly lol most customers are staring into their phones or far from the counter on their phones and the ones that are glaring at u are usually impatient and mean people who want to police every move u make while making "their" drink and wondering why its not out 1 minute after ordering it
keyboardseizur 14 points 1y ago
I'm a customer and I might get downvoted for this, but I'd rather not interact with employees outside of ordering and picking up my drink/food. The employee should focus on what their doing. Plus I hate small talk.
Illustrious_Ad_8643 6 points 1y ago
See I wish corporate could understand this. Yes we can try to make customer connections if we’re feeling up to it and the customer is up to it, but to try to connect with every customer is a lot. Sometimes we don’t want to do it and we know y’all don’t want to either. We should really just be allowed to read the situation and not force it on anyone or ourselves.
Electrical_Metal_106 10 points 1y ago
I personally love chatting up the customers-but I’m doing it for my own entertainment-not because “they” want me to.
Js_On_My_Yeet 10 points 1y ago
We don't get paid enough. Fixed it for you.
Eastern_Effective_49 9 points 1y ago
I never did it
FearlessSentence9667 8 points 1y ago
i love connecting but only when i’m in a position where i’m not doing much else (window when we have a stager, handoff, handheld when the line is too long and the cars are stopped, etc.) but if i’m on front, or bar, or anything else where i’m having to do other things, connecting is Not worth it
fan_Artic15 8 points 1y ago
Sometimes i fake it by finding something random to compliment them on, but i also bust my ass on bar to not talk to people
cookiemonstah87 7 points 1y ago
Same! I don't mind front-end, but window kills me and I'm honestly not great at it aside from the taking money and handing them stuff part. It's so hard for me to stand there waiting for their order to be ready, I just want to go help make it, especially when it's a large order!

"When they're waiting for their order is when you should be socializing!" Pft. They're already ignoring me because that large order is for all the people in their car that they're currently talking to, and I can barely hear them over the window fan, anyway. I can never even hear them asking for a straw, and about 75% of our customers ask for straws.
ProofFeeling8600 6 points 1y ago
Considering we make the equivalent of 2 drinks per hour after tax, yeah I'd say we're underpaid. I'd much rather a higher wage and pay for my spotify.
Monsterknc 6 points 1y ago
No fr!!! When my shifts were pushing for it in the summer my response was “are we getting paid more?”
NoEstate6533 5 points 1y ago
Like bro just making two of those customized drinks is our hourly pay lol
cookiemonstah87 2 points 1y ago
I always love when customers complain about prices going up and I can tell them "you're telling me! The only reason any of us can even afford any of our drinks is because we get them for free while on the clock, and now they're even MORE expensive!"

I've considered mentioning that their two drink order cost more than I make in an hour, but haven't quite gotten to that level of passive-aggression
Melodic_Journalist_5 5 points 1y ago
Maybe when we have enough staff on the floor where I'm not constantly doing 2 people's jobs, I'll try to make customer connections, but until then 🤷‍♀️
Necessary_Low939 5 points 1y ago
For those who get less than 20 hrs… I don’t think u should make any connections. Literally don’t get paid enough to do this.
Responsible_Snow7109 3 points 1y ago
100%. Like ur guna screw with my livelihood and take a TON of my hours away and pay me shit and expect me to bust my ass working the jobs of more than 1 barista all while trying to cOnNeCt WiTh CuStOmErS
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
Not only that, my coworkers now are getting second jobs because we don’t get paid enough
Responsible_Snow7109 1 points 1y ago
Ive been in the process of looking for a different job alltogether. But i hate transitioning to another health insurance which takes time and i have a few health issues that can get pricy if that happens but once i find another job that pays considerably well with more hours than starbucks then i wouldnt mind the insurance transition
Necessary_Low939 2 points 1y ago
Correct, it’s sad for people that truly enjoys the job but have to go elsewhere because corporate is money hungry. Like… Earning a little bit less won’t kill them… give people at least 20 hrs if they asked, raise the pay, keep and enforce the benefits… and everyone would be happy. I really don’t see this slow season since there are still customers and when there’s still many things to do in the store (apparently, nothing gets done with or without the people at my store). Before they did extend the opening hrs and customers are not used to the longer hrs, that’s when it really felt slow, we’ll close the store earlier!
Hazel_is_Trans 5 points 1y ago
My sov yells at me for not doing it... also I'm socially awkward and a introvert so most of my conversations are about weather news and or there day I dont know how connect but if I vibe with someone I get yelled at because of window time. ..

Fun
Hazel_is_Trans 3 points 1y ago
Sorry brain no work
J-cat_loves_dogs14 1 points 1y ago
I know how that goes I don’t always like talking to people, but when I do I hold up the line talking.
LavalampClock 4 points 1y ago
bb we don't get paid enough period.
muted_fire_ 4 points 1y ago
Agreed. Our district got all hours slashed so hard in the last month. And we are averaging 3 barista and one shift per peak. Where’s our manager you might ask???… opening a new store 🥲 no time to make “connections” I’m kind but nothing more, I don’t care anymore. (3 years really takes the sparkle away)
MomtoMax 4 points 1y ago
I met my husband 22 years ago when I worked at Starbucks and he was a customer but that was a different time. I watch partners now and I don't know how ya'll do it. It seems like you barely have enough time to catch your breath let alone make chit chat with customers.
cookiemonstah87 1 points 1y ago
Catch our breath? What's that? I don't understand, I'm working ovens which means I have to take the orders of all these customers lined up in the cafe, brew more coffee before we run out, and make sure none of the 20 breakfast sandwiches someone just ordered from the drive-thru catch on fire because someone is taking a minute to tell me their order, all at once. Doesn't seem to matter which I try to prioritize, it always seems to be the wrong choice and I get yelled at for doing the wrong thing...
Business_Custard7056 4 points 1y ago
Our customer connection score is currently dropping because we are out of things like syrups/milks/etc. What am I supposed to do about that 😂
marvelmanda 4 points 1y ago
Customer connections help my mental health honestly. 🤷🏼‍♀️
lpablito 2 points 1y ago
Same made me better as a person and learned how to small talk tbh. I’m really bad at it.
cynicosm 3 points 1y ago
go to any other drivethru for any other chain. they will not ask you your name, how you're doing, or get to know you. they are there to do their job, and they get paid just as much, if not more in some cases.

(this isn't meant to shit on other drive thru workers, just pointing out the disparities and how sbux emphasizes CC with no sort of compensation)
lonelyinthesun 3 points 1y ago
Another problem with is is life outside of starbucks. When I'm not on the clock I'm not required to talk to you. Yet I've had many people recognize and talk to me and still tell me about their problems. It gets old after awhile. And I dont want to listen to your problems on my free time I have enough of my own (and choose not to dump them on customer service workers.)
Heliotrope88 3 points 1y ago
Not paid enough to do emotional labor.
haydensidun 3 points 1y ago
People have more to say when they’re pissed than they do when they have a positive or otherwise normal experience. The few customers who have a bad experience are the majority of those who take those customer surveys, hence why customer connection scores are generally so low.

I try my best to be nice and friendly to customers, even when I’m in a shit mood and I’ve had a shit day, but that can only go so far.
RawkusAurelius 3 points 1y ago
While CEO Howard Schultz is free to turn his back on and straight up walk out on the heroic protests of barista Gianna Reeve for fair union elections, the actual workers at Starbucks are still forced to smile and chat up every nightmare customer "for the sake of the brand".
Illustrious-Air9834 3 points 1y ago
It’s honestly very emotionally draining
screddachedda 3 points 1y ago
I’m sooooo happy to not be working at Starbucks anymore
Legitimate-Back-822 2 points 1y ago
We don't get paid enough for how much the company makes!!
Illustrious_Ad_8643 2 points 1y ago
The thing is I’m still new myself (I’ve been working for about 3 months). I’m lucky enough to pay really cheap rent considering I’m in Florida, but it’s still barely enough. I do try to make customer connections when I work on window (our SBUX is in the process of unionizing, and it’s been pretty tense so I try my best to avoid any retaliation by playing it safe and following the rules) but I always hope and pray whenever I go in that I don’t have to. While bar and support are physically draining I find that window is so mentally and emotionally exhausting that I tend to be even more tired from a day on window than on bar. I have to take a nap on those days. And some people are just so rude yet I have to sit there and grovel to them because they are a paying customer? I have to take disrespect from them just because the customer is right? It’s not ok.
cookiemonstah87 1 points 1y ago
I feel the same way. My body being tired is one thing. I can still sit at my desk and do things on my computer, or watch a movie, play games, etc. Mind being tired means I can't function.
Illustrious_Ad_8643 2 points 1y ago
Had a lady come through the drive the other day and she seemed stressed out.I- being the genuinely concerned and kind person that I am- asked her how her day has been so far. She had a thick European accent and said to me “Not too good honestly”. I asked her why and if everything is ok. She said “My family is in Ukraine and you know what’s happening there don’t you?” I said “Of course! I’m so very sorry. I hope your family is safe!” And she responded with “That’s the thing. I haven’t heard from them in two weeks”. My heart broke instantly and I served her her coffee and told her that “I’ll be thinking about her and her family and I hope they get back to her soon”. Never saw her again but I have thought about her every day since.
BluAngelSpedd 2 points 1y ago
I had a woman come up to my drive thru window crying and immediately told me she had just put her dog down... I didn't know what to say or do so I just gave her her drink for free. Went home that night and hugged my dog super tight.
nikkicarter1111 2 points 1y ago
Yes.
WanderingRube 1 points 1y ago
When our score gets hit from people posting "I ordered a grande cappuccino and it was only half full! This is ridiculous!" from a mobile order that they waited an hour to pick up, what can we do?
Imaginarybluntallday 1 points 1y ago
It’s really hard with the labor cuts too… I know personally that my district, even if we are short staffed, would rather have a solo bar during peak instead of solo drive. Like I’m running a four floor for peak, and if we had more hands to get more done during that time, maybe they would be happy with the amount of production, but when everyone is doing two jobs basically, it’s insane… and then slap the “customer connections is the main focus as being a Starbucks partner.” Like no, serving someone a gross coffee and then a smile will not make that connection score go up 🤡 let me focus on my art and you take care of Karen.
Great_Introduction73 1 points 1y ago
your brain is telling you they hate you, although a lot of people are negative i would try to talk more then you are compelled to. Self-preservation instincts tell you you shouldn’t when in reality it’s a source of endorphins you could be taking advantage of

Customer connection is actually my favorite part of the job. I tend to be very shy, and I'm terribly anxious, but this job and my last has helped me talk to people. I enjoy making sure the customer is happy, and I like making little connections with them. Honestly, if I could get some sort of job just doing direct customer relations work somewhere, I definitely would take it.
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
how much does your area pay my ex Starbucks paid damn near 2x the state minimum wage but than again my states minimum wage is $7.25 an hour and i was making $14.50
cookiemonstah87 1 points 1y ago
I'm currently making $13.50 which is only $0.50 above my state's minimum.
Mermaidtron 1 points 1y ago
Yeessss...im literally making it with my shifts and these customer connections just ain't it 😒
muthafackin_g_420 1 points 1y ago
PERIOD 👏🏻👏🏻 so glad i got fired
raycamaro 0 points 1y ago
Wow. There are lots of places hiring guys. Go check it out.
bman14613 0 points 1y ago
Customer connection is more about creating an environment where everyone feels safe to freely communicate. Makes them come back for more. It’s a level of professionalism where you can view the customer as an actual person instead of an annoying frappacino hoe.

Ps. stranger does not hate you, they hate how you portray yourself at work 😝
bluezuzu -7 points 1y ago
Babe…. We’re getting paid $15 here in less than two months. How much more do you want to be paid to TALK to people pls 😭😭😭
taarla_grimoire 1 points 1y ago
yo for people like me in big cities and certain areas where min wage is *literally higher than $15* this means nothing. so yes for some people it’s great but it changes absolutely nothing for others. they still don’t care, just trying to act as if they do.
chronic_life -1 points 1y ago
Its not that hard tbh haha try doing chick fil a yall wouldn’t last a day
cookiemonstah87 1 points 1y ago
Just because chick-fil-a requires more doesn't mean it's easy, and they don't get paid enough, either. Emotional labor takes a toll on people, some more than others.
chronic_life 1 points 1y ago
They actually do get paid enough at chick fil a haha i bought three cadillacs in 4 years so you cant say that lmao. I feel like its all about controlling your emotions and growing the fuck up haha. People complain about the smallest shit now

I don’t think it was for everyone, might just be my store but I don’t think so. it most definitely was not outlined for me or for a decent amount of my coworkers either. I thought the drive thru experience I had before would put me ahead but I was so wrong, and my managers loved me on drive in my last workplace. I honestly really tried to make every “customer experience” nice and often went the extra mile to make it “memorable.” but at SBUX literally no matter what you do it seems it’s never enough. it kinda sucks.
cookiemonstah87 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, I was aware this is a customer service job. That's what it was explained as in my interview. I've worked customer service almost my entire adult life, so I know what that means for most companies.

I didn't know Starbucks expects so much more until I was halfway through my iPad training. Mind you I could have quit at that point, but I do still need to make money for rent, and this job is better than a lot of others, even if we still don't get paid enough.

And yeah, I'm starting to get really worn down by the fact that no matter what I do or how hard I try, somehow it's always the wrong thing, and never enough. My shift is constantly telling me what to do when. I'll be on both ovens and front-end during peak, trying to make sure food is getting out fast enough while not ignoring customers, but the second I turn my back on someone to pull something out of the oven, I'm getting yelled at for ignoring customers. If I take too long to get someone's order in (usually because they're still thinking or it's a big order), I get yelled at because drive-thru is waiting on food. Then as soon as there's half a second to breathe, I try to stretch my back and shoulders a bit so I don't develop any physical problems, I'm getting yelled at to get ice for bar, restock cups, wipe down windows, etc. The fuck am I supposed to do??? It's not like I'm just leaning on the counter, playing on my phone!!!

I want to ask my shift for some specific feedback because it feels like I can never do enough, and the extra stress of her breathing down my neck is more exhausting than the job itself, but we never have any down time when I could actually talk to her.
cookiemonstah87 2 points 1y ago
