Dairy alternatives should not cost extra. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by EarthLaser
It’s an industry-wide standard that makes no sense and needs to end. Because non-dairies have a longer shelf life, they are not lossed as often as dairy. Plus, they don’t require refrigeration so storing them costs nothing. And it’s not like it requires any more labor to reach for the oat milk than it does to reach for the 2%. It will affect the texture and flavor of the drink, but I wouldn’t necessarily consider it an upgrade.

Charging extra for dairy alternatives is an unjust tax for lactose intolerant people and vegans. Milk alternatives more than preference, for some people they are a requirement. Dairy, however, is a preference. If I ran a coffee shop, I would make regular milk cost extra as a deterrent due to the environmental and economic impact of dairy farming.

They are a more expensive product. While the bonuses you’ve pointed out are 💯 valid, it doesn’t reduce the overall c.p.u. Also, animal dairy is still the milk of choice in most Us markets, even though it leaves a larger footprint environmentally. Not to mention the proven health implications dairy causes due to continued consumption. But, just like the tobacco Industry, big dairy will have to answer for its actions hopefully sooner then later.

They cost multiple times more than gallons of dairy milk, per much smaller cartons. And are still only good 5 days once opened. Cost difference is significant, so they definitely have a valid reason.
csaine 58 points 1y ago
Non-dairy milk should be refrigerated after opening. It says so on the box. Please don't leave open cartons of milk on the counter to get warm. The health inspector will temp them the same as any dairy milk because they should be kept cold after being opened.

I'm pretty sure OP knows this, they were probably talking about when keeping extra in the back. Non-dairy milks don't need to be refrigerated before opening, therefore your saving money buy not needing refrigerated storage.
csaine 14 points 1y ago
True, but a lot of stores don't necessarily have shelf space outside of a fridge either. Most backrooms I've seen are pretty small and are packed with other product already.
Advanced-Grapefruit4 3 points 1y ago
That is 100% true, I know for my store the shelf space is super tiny. I definitely understand how it's just easier to stick to the current system and keep the large refrigerators. Hopefully one day shelf space won't be to scarce.
StealthModePhoenix 2 points 1y ago
Isn't it standard that oatmilks and coconut milks need refrigerated 4 hours before use?

When you go to the grocery store what costs more, a Litre of Oat Milk or a Litre 2%?
vkapadia 18 points 1y ago
It's even more of a difference in America. What costs more, a liter of oat milk or an entire gallon of milk?
Downtown0317 9 points 1y ago
If we’re talking oatly, it’s a little more than $5 for a half gallon of oat milk. It’s less than $3 for 2%
xCherryBombshell 6 points 1y ago
Right and then when you factor in the markup to make a profit. (Which all businesses do) then you get the price of what they charge for the change in milk.

They also have analysts consider labour, rent, renovations, salaries, training, equipment, upkeep, etc.

Our bars alone break down twice a week and they are the new M2s. And when you see the bill for the dude to come and clean it out and replace a tiny little valve you'll want to vomit lol

And this isn't me drinking the kool-aid, it's just looking at numbers and knowing the actual variables associated with running a business. It's insane on the level that the bux is on haha
Downtown0317 5 points 1y ago
Yup yup, it makes sense, and generally speaking a different milk is gonna be a up charge anywhere you go.
BeardiesRule112 21 points 1y ago
Why should blind people have to pay for glasses? Why should women have to pay for pads/tampons? *crickets*
Fearless_While_9824 11 points 1y ago
In CA, vision impaired individuals are completely supported. As for tampons, many government programs assist to procure feminine products at no cost. However, tampons are a “specialty “ product but napkins are not. Each state is different, and I would highly recommend to all who are in need of quality of life products, to investigate your local city or state government programs. A lot of times social programs exist that you didn’t know about, because you’ve never been in need of them, until you are 😊. Best to you.
vkapadia 18 points 1y ago
Those products are also necessary for the people that use them. Alt milks are not.
Fearless_While_9824 14 points 1y ago
very good point! all milks are a choice. water is the only fluid humans need to survive past the age of 2, as with most all mammals. 😊
Fearless_While_9824 8 points 1y ago
don’t know why this statement was downvoted. 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s very accurate
EarthLaser [OP] 2 points 1y ago
True. All milks are a choice. That’s humbling.
Ali-McWonderland 3 points 1y ago
Little known fact: 28 states impose a “tampon tax” on feminine hygiene products. They are considered “luxury goods.”
KenansCloud 1 points 1y ago
Good question
itachisbigbootygf 19 points 1y ago
Maybe bc they cost more to make? lol.
robxnarchist 4 points 1y ago
They don’t, the US just subsidizes dairy, making them cheaper to consumers

While I completely agree with you (am lactose intolerant) I’d rather Starbucks eat the cost of giving all of you a just raise than the price of dairy alternatives. I love all of you. Starbucks is a ridiculous fucking job with ridiculous fucking standards. You deserve a livable wage.
JJ_Pause 6 points 1y ago
Since the start of the year they have been free in the UK
Have_Donut 5 points 1y ago
Dairy milk is an order of magnitude cheaper to produce.
myeyehurtsrn 5 points 1y ago
In the UK they've stopped charging for their dairy alternatives since January, which is kinda cool!
IslandSwirl21 3 points 1y ago
I agree with this because I have a severe milk allergy where if I eat/ drink with milk then my throat will close and I can die. I get it for free cause I work there but it’s messed up that I have to pay for my life threatening allergy.
calyix 3 points 1y ago
In the UK they recently made all dairy alternatives free which is one of the few things I'll commend the company on tbh
kenkiii 2 points 1y ago
They're free at my store
Sad_Current_1383 1 points 1y ago
I'm lactose intolerant and a Starbucks partner, I agree wholeheartedly.
DaddyGray69 1 points 1y ago
They charge more because people will pay it. If people refused to go to starbucks over it, they'd have to eat the cost, but nobody wants to inconvenience themselves for the sake of change in modern society. 🙄
Ordinary-Theory-8289 1 points 1y ago
They’ll have a hard time finding another coffee shop if the principle of their boycott is an added charge for non dairy milks. OP Even said this is an industry standard
DaddyGray69 1 points 1y ago
I dunno, I could go to Walmart and get my own coffee setup for less money than some people spend in one week at Starbucks.
Ordinary-Theory-8289 1 points 1y ago
Well yeah, obviously

if anything, we should charge people for dairy milk
Ordinary-Theory-8289 5 points 1y ago
Can you explain your reasoning? Bc dairy milk is significantly cheaper
missgurll 0 points 1y ago
because it doesnt come @ the cost of an animals life + its more environmentally impactful
Ordinary-Theory-8289 1 points 1y ago
Unfortunately that’s not how cost is determined
missgurll -1 points 1y ago
in my world it is
