Advice for green bean who keeps on making same mistakes over and over(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vera_berry
What advice would you give to a green bean who continuously keeps making the same mistakes? I’ve been working at Starbucks for at least 2 months and I feel like my progress has stalled.
I struggle with remembering with what food has run out, even if anyone tells me verbally or even if I write it down and tape it somewhere for me to see clearly. I’ve been dealing with a lot of anxiety and depression and I struggle with remaining calm while running the register. So I have trouble retaining information.

Additionally, I’m slow at bar. Oftentimes, other baristas would hop on the bar instead of me. Or, they would much prefer that they take care of the bar instead of me. If I try helping by hopping onto the cold bar while another barista is already at the hot bar, the barista at the hot bar would insist they would take care of the cold drinks. I’m usually left at register as a result.
(Other than gaining more experience to get faster at bar, I do acknowledge that I don’t remember the more complicated drinks and have to set aside time to memorize the recipe cards for that.)

I feel useless at work because other baristas seem to want to take care of everything else to prevent me from making the same mistakes and/or having someone slow at bar. I think other baristas are tired of the mistakes I keep making. I think my SSV is disappointed with me because I keep making the same mistakes and not making progress— and my SSV has been nothing but helpful since the beginning.
Would you have any advice for a green bean on what to do?

when ur on register when u click on any drink the recipe for the drink is on the right side of the screen so that's a good way to memorize drinks if they put on register a lot
Also you got this

Sorry I forgot to mention that I work at a licensed store so I don't get the same features on our register. :( We do have the recipe cards for the drinks but not allowed to take it home though

I used quizlet for my first few months while waiting for the bus. some of the recipes are outdated, but most of them are the same. just ask somebody if you're uncertain.
I've been working at a licensed store for 4 months now, and am just now getting comfortable with making drinks.

It sounds like you are being too hard on yourself. I was an older green bean. I worked in another service industry since I was a teen and was in management when I left. Even with all my prior food and customer service experience, I felt like I was in the way constantly for the first few months. One day things just started clicking. I got faster, was able to remember much more and started feeling better about myself. I did have many partners that were helpful and showed me my mistakes. My advice is to not try to do too much at once. Pick one personal goal per shift and focus on that one thing only until you get it down pat. You can do it! The fact that you are here asking shows me that you are going to succeed.
