A waste of time and food. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Used_Entrepreneur550
I’m an opener and I’ve been one since I started working at Starbucks almost 7 months ago. Setting up the pastry case with real food slows us down, especially when there’s only 30 minutes to set everything up. I hate having to try and open the plastic wrap without having to break a cinnamon coffee cake or a lemon/pumpkin loaf, leaving crumbs everywhere.

Then at the end of the day, it gets thrown out. This is such a waste of the food and our time in the morning. If Starbucks started making fake display food, I would have a little more more time to do my opening cards and check RTD&E.

setting up the display case with real food is just starbucks trying to cling to the “third place” “comfy coffee shop” when it’s actually fast food, it’s crazy they haven’t considered making fake food to put in the display case since they’re so “eco friendly”, it’s such a waste of food. we could have donated that to people who need it.

Yeah biggest waste of energy and food most count bites use cardboard pictures of the food

we only change and clean the entire pastry case once a week on clean play. And then we change the sandwiches and egg bites every other day that we don’t get a delivery. It’s worked out so great. The pastries don’t look nasty or mold in a week and we realized the savory foods would soon so we just do those every two days

We did that with our old GM but the fruit flies were getting pretty bad when we did it once a week, especially in summer

i completely understand that! we had a huge fruit fly problem that i’m convinced fixed itself. we honestly didn’t do a lot of stuff differently. for the food case maybe try twice a week, we also have done that. we’ve also done that where we’d do it on clean play and also the slowest day of the week for us which is sunday. and we’d have whoever took it down start setting it back up with pastries and the morning people would just do the savory foods

My store leaves our displays out for a week LMAO

I’ve always wanted to do this! It’s not like they’re going to look much different… and such a waste doing it daily. I wish they’d go back to the printed photos at least.

My store used to, but we got a really bad gnat problem so we had to stop :(

Totally agree. And there are 32,600+ Starbucks Stores worldwide. Think about the amount of food being thrown out every single day. And for no good reason. So gross.

For us at my store we take it down every day uhh also an opener some are fast while some are slower and it’s a pain to do…. When you have a million of other things to do. I wish they would just use those plastic food displays lol or images or even maybe a digital image since we’re being more tech savvy

Most Canada locations have scrapped the real pastry case and replaced the items with images. It looks so much better, saves us baristas a huge amount of time, and we don’t get nearly as many insects in the summer since all that food isn’t just sitting out. 10/10 would recommend

Also cut waste in half.

yeah, I don't understand why we can't have fake display food for the pastry case. the time used to set the case up, could've been used for something else 😩

I don’t understand why they don’t

It takes me like 15 mins tops to set up the pastry case. I have so much time I move on to other opening tasks. If we used fake food displays we probably wouldn’t need an opening barista and would just need a key holder to open. I love opening I’ve lost some of my opens so others can learn it because I’m a solid opener and others need to learn.

Even though the case only takes a few minutes if you have the layout memorized, we still have to count and date every individual sandwich (we get about 9 full trays every morning), restock the sandwich fridges, restock the pastry cart, unload and count the 3 RTD bins, restock the pastry tray at DT, and restock the RTD case with waters, juices, etc. All in under 30 minutes. It’s a lot. If they could remove just one of those tasks, it would be very helpful.

I'm sure they'd find something else for the other person, it's explicitly against policy to only have one employee working, so they can't get rid of them.

That’s true. It honestly depends on the day because there are days I’ve had to make backups for the day because night crew didn’t do it. When I finish setting up I just make sure we’re fully stocked. There’s always something to do. Floors first thing in the morning 🤪
