miscommunication with shift ?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by gouachepaints
Mm i’m not sure if anyone would see this but normally a shift is supposed to know when you take your breaks and lunches, and know when you’re out right ? not saying that they need to know but most of the times they’re the ones telling you this and that; well i’m still somewhat new of a partner it’s been 3 months since i started working for starbucks and i’ve never had any problem with my shifts, except this one.

for example: I was late once (by five minutes) and had gotten a lecture that I need to run my errands after work and not before (i had gotten in at 11 but was stuck in traffic), but when my coworker came in an hour late she laughed and said just clock in.

Kind of suspect, if you ask me, but i’m still considered new i guess so what do i know right ? So today I had a short shift, 5am to 9:45am; easy right ? It was, sure i was late due waking up late because ive been being busy with moving, but regardless my day went smooth surprisingly with her being lead. Normally, with all my other shifts, when i’m out, im OUT, i’ll stop what im doing cause someone is always assigned accordingly right on time. But at 9:44, a drink for cafe came in and as i was pulling shots it was 9:45, im out. I was still working on the drink and i thought let me be nice and finish it because no one was assigned to take over front bar for me, so I went to my shift who was trying to assign two other partners who got off their ten and told her I’m out right now but I’m finishing up this last drink for cafe. She just looks at me and i go back to finishing the drink. It’s an iced white mocha so it’s quick and easy. I leave the floor and clock out and as I’m talking to my coworker who went on their ten, the shift stops me and lectures me saying, “(my name) Next time don’t be waking off the floor when you’re out, you need to tell me when you’re out cause then you mess up rotation” and just basically said that I never told her I was out. I just looked at her and said sure.

i’m still annoyed cause i work tomorrow in the morning with her; but am i in the wrong for being mad ?? like genuinely ?? I told her what i was doing and that i’m out of work, she was looking at the schedule and failed to assign someone new. but please i’m open to any opinions :/.

edit: i’m annoyed but worried because i feel like i’m asking a lot due to me transferring stores because i’m moving back to California and i would hate for her to tell my manager the wrong information while i’m trying to leave the store peacefully.

I’ve been working for a long time. Being late happens. Whatever. Don’t make it a habit.

As for leaving, it’s common courtesy to let your
Coworkers you are off. I usually say “hey I’m off now, who’s taking over for me”.

yea i’m usually never late, those were only the two times i was late, &’ It’s probably because i’m used to my shifts already assigning someone new and then i realize i’m off, i rarely work with this shift supervisor, but i was just annoyed cause I told her and she was looking at the schedule and didn’t want to assign someone new to cafe, especially when everyone knew i was off.

As a shift, I make sure to know who comes in and when. I make sure to know who gets a break and when. I make sure to use the tools provided to us in order to make everyone's day run as smoothly as possible.

I know everyone has a different leadership style but personally I like to make sure everyone is noticed, appreciated, and supported.

Rotation is MY responsibility, I'm the "person in charge" when it comes to a lot...I don't need to add an additional burden on my coworkers just because.

Personally I think your SSV is being somewhat selfish in their handling of shifts and rotation from what you have posted here.

not in the wrong. you’re scheduled at a certain time — she has eyes. she can read the day’s line-up. she should know when you’re in, when your breaks are, and when you’re out, every day, bc she reviews the DCR before every single shift. it’s NOT your fault she wasn’t prepared for you to leave, especially when you had already given her a heads up.

As a shift, I will say, it’s polite to ensure you’re restocked, set up for success, it’s not just a “byeee”. she’s also one person, she has to know everyone’s weakness and strength, she has to look at the floor and see who to replace, maybe the two coming back from break aren’t great at bar or warming, or whatever zone it takes. Mornings can roll quickly, it happens to me too, and generally takes a moment or two to figure out how the floor is (because it’s often that I’m dealing with 10 different things *money, floor, customers, restock, bar support, front support, and also figuring out where everyone is at). Give her the benefit of the doubt, maybe you’ll be a shift someday and see how difficult it can be at times. (I know during the 9-11 times, I’d have to do 18hr pull, see if there are people picking up money, starting the deposit for the day, and also trying to see who needs the next 15/30 for the day.)
