Very Interested in Applying! Any Tips?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Sugatatas
I live in a state with a very low minimum wage and I’m on the college student hustle, so I would love to work somewhere with a more accommodating wage.
I want to apply to Starbucks, but I have no prior knowledge of a “fast-food-esque” work environment. I currently work as a florist at a midsized grocery store, so I can handle insults and overly friendly customer interaction, but I would really appreciate any advice you may have since I’d be completely new to working the register, drive-thrus, and making drinks.
I have heard there are flash cards on quizlet to help memorize drink recipes, but is there anything else I can do to be a productive member of the team?
Thank you so much :)

I've noticed that a lot of people on this subreddit don't like their jobs and 75% of the posts are people complaining but I FREAKING LOVE MY JOB! It definitely helps learning the drinks if you've been a customer before. If you're interested in getting a lot of bar time (making drinks) then ADK ASK ASK and take initiative. Training is heavy and can be overwhelming but once you know your stuff it's a cake walk. Be ready to deal with customers who don't want to pay alot of money so they try and cheat the system. Stand your ground and do the right thing. Also prioritize doing things correctly over speed. Starbucks is always pushing the baristas to be faster but that comes at the cost of quality. Always swirl the syrup with the espresso before you pour the milk, always ring in the orders correctly when on drive through. It's worth it. Customers will love you if you can remember them too. In my store, I work opening and peak like a 4:30 to 10 am and I know every single regular customer. They pull up to the drive through and I see them in the camera and I greet them with their name and ask if they're getting their (insert drink here) my coworkers have told me that we get CONSIDERABLY MORE tips when I'm working window or drive through order.
That's a lot but basically perform excellence. Shift supervisors and managers love baristas that have a passion for the job. It's more about making money and doing a job. It's about being apart of a customers morning routine, asking about their life, making that customer connection. We get to be apart of their lives and make their favorite coffee. I think that's really special and a lot of people take it for granted. I hope you love Starbucks as much as I do and I would love to hear how it goes for you in the future so feel free to reach out!

I'm convinced that 90% of the people in this subreddit haven't worked another job in their life. It took me working somewhere else to appreciate Starbucks. I came back and have been so much happier here than any job I've ever had.
-Amazing benefits (my gf with a 9-5 job that pays more than what I make has insurance that can't even compare to sbux).
-Plenty of perks.
-The ability to pick up shifts when you want.
-Grants and stocks through Fidelity.
-401k.
Like it's a CUSTOMER SERVICE job at one of the most profitable and successful companies in the world. We signed up for it when we got hired, get over it. If a customer is a shitbag to me I just laugh because I know that my life isn't as shitty as theirs that I have to belittle people at a coffee shop. It's literally just coffee. The company has also enabled us to stand up for ourselves if we aren't being truly respected.
If none of that is applicable to you above then it's not a Starbucks issue. It's a management issue. You just have to make the effort to seek a relocation.

I’ve work many places before and after Starbucks. It all depends on your SM and DM. If they suck it’s hard to have an enjoyable experience. I loved my time working there, my coworkers all of those things. But there’s things that my SM did that really took things away from it for me. I also think working in big city vs small town changes things too
Thee_Lizard_Head3 points1y ago
Yes exactly! It's definitely more a leadership issue!

shaken espressos… get half pumps of syrup? all of them? not just brown sugar?
interyx3 points1y ago
Correct. When they moved from Starbucks Doubleshot on Ice to Shaken Espresso all the pumps were cut in half.

Starbucks is always hiring especially right now so the fact that you have any experience in customer service at all you more than likely will have no issues :) someone got hired at a Starbucks near me who I trained at my store and there last experience was working at a thrift store
Sugatatas [OP]2 points1y ago
Thank you! I’m glad I’ll have one foot in the door with dealing with customers

I have a love hate relationship with Starbucks. There’s no in between for me. It’s either one of the best jobs or one of the worst jobs depending on what kind of day I’m having. I will say it’s a lot even for a seasoned fast food/customer/people facing employee. You will feel overwhelmed in the start. By 2 months you’ll feel pretty comfortable and by the 3-4 month things will really click. Your partners will help you as much as possible. I do feel like my manager has been very flexible with me and is giving me the opportunity to move up to SSV even with my availability limited a little due to school. Coworkers are awesome! Ask questions, learn, and grow. It’s probably the most I test fast food jobs I’ve had but it can be great!

Thank you so much!
SeparateAd34731 points1y ago
I hope it helps! The first few months are tough but it’s nice to have the flexibility and you get to meet some great people (coworkers/partners, animals and regulars) the days go by very fast and if you love coffee/Starbucks drinks you’ll get your fill! It’s just a lot to learn in the beginning so I wanted to add that so you don’t get discouraged. A lot of partners use Reddit to vent, myself included, so if you’re truly interested in Starbucks don’t let it scare you off. Good luck OP, you got this!

Are you a minor ?
Sugatatas [OP]2 points1y ago
Not anymore lol, turned 18 not too long ago, which is why I was never trained on a register at the grocery store I work at since I was underage for a large majority of my time there
Dasy6175 points1y ago
Good if your a minor you don’t get much hours coming from experience lol they tend to be stricter on everything
Sugatatas [OP]2 points1y ago
Yeah, I’ve seen that everywhere:// I hope I’m over that work phase

Don't think about learning the drinks right now. You will get trained. Being on bar is the easiest position you can be once you get the hang of it.
I would say, for most job environments and of course Starbucks as well, the most overlooked things are:
1. Communication 2. Workplace relationships
Communicate - if you don't lack any learning capacity, the most important thing to do when you're new is to ASK. If you don't know, ask. They will be accommodating because you are new. It is important that you own up to your mistakes and take initiative to fix them by asking somrone who knows. This is the core value you need to get ahead in a new work environment. The drinks will follow suit if you can build this quality in yourself.
Workplace relationships - don't be shy but don't overstep! Don't talk bad about your co workers especially when you're new and at the very bottom of the workplace hierarchy. I would very much love for politics not to exist in the workplace but they do. Be nice to everyone and don't point out people's flaws or mistakes even when you know they're doing something wrong - not as a newbie, until you've been there a while and know exactly what you're doing. Even if you're the best worker in the world, if your co workers don't like you, you're going to have a very difficult time.
Additional tip: work on knowing what your co workers need right now to perform their job well. This is the customer support position. Do small things especially things people generally don't like doing, like cleaning or fetching ingredients just to make their job run smoother. When you can't do the main tasks right now, small little supportive things mean a lot.
I've been at Starbucks for a while and can say we absolutely dislike it when newbies don't take initiatives to learn or are too egotistical. It's okay to make mistakes, everyone does and we still do. It's not okay to not own up and do what you can do improve.
Starbucks is a haven compared to other fast food places. I've never dreaded going to work because I have such good relationships with all my partners and we work as a team to get the job done. In a nutshell, it's all about perspective. If you make your workplace a miserable place in your head, it will become one. Learn to love what you do.

if you are a female , just dont say anything bad about the company and you’ll be good
Sugatatas [OP]1 points1y ago
Not too hard to do lol, thank you

Store manger here! What I look for in a potential hire is someone who likes making connections with people, always willing to make the moment right, and genuinely excited about the position. Decent availability doesn’t hurt either. Just be yourself! Be able to speak as to why you want to work at Starbucks. Hope this helps! 💚
