All this was *kinda* a thing many many eons ago. SSVs are encouraged to open the store early/before official opening hours if they’re ready to accept customers, and if there are still customers in line at the time of closing to not lock the door/turn away new customers until everyone is actually out (the last one is a bit of a difficult balancing act), but it’s not an official “you must open 10 min before the store is actually “open”” thing….

i mean yeah i've been w the company for 3 years so i'm aware of that old policy. it's definitely not something we still do, especially with the brutal labor cuts lately, there is just no way we have time to serve folks if they show up At close.
i honestly just hate these clickbait headlines because no one reads the actual article. it's just gonna encourage folks to try to show up late, demand to be served, and take out their anger on us when they inevitably get told no 🙃
KJ2998SJ108 points1y ago
I emailed the editorial because I know that isn't true in my area (I wasn't sure if it was a thing elsewhere) and they amended it to include a bit saying to check with your store before assuming. If it's actually utterly untrue everywhere, please guys, I urge you to email them and let them know so they can take it down completely. There is a contact email for their editorial team at the bottom of the page.
thebestdaysofmyflerm37 points1y ago
Lol it's a tabloid, they don't give a single shit about accurate reporting.
KJ2998SJ2 points1y ago
They do. Within an hour of me emailing them about it, they changed it. So they will certainly take it down if they receive information that it is completely false.
WesternEvery177910 points1y ago
It's an old policy. It doesn't apply anywhere.

When I worked at Jamba Juice we had a 10-minute rule. We had to open 10 minutes before the posted open time and close ten minutes after the posted close time. I hated it so much, but I really only ever had to deal with the closing problem because I also wasn't allowed to unlock the doors if I was the only one in there, and they never scheduled a second person until opening time on the dot. So... ¯\\_(ツ)\_/¯
CurranLynn7 points1y ago
I thought at Jamba it was 5 minutes. 😂 but then Again there was less to do to open the store at Jamba.
OneRoseDark8 points1y ago
Might've been! It's been four or five years since I escaped that hellhole.
I could open the whole store by myself in an hour. Had that shit timed to the minute including my playlist. That part was glorious.
Comfortable-Plane94448 points1y ago
Who is the garbage person that wrote this. This type of clickbait just encourages bad behavior from customers
miitopia_emblem22 points1y ago
Sara Whitman wrote this. Sara Whitman then saw it fit to remove the name “Sara Whitman” from Sara Whitman’s blatantly false article, which is interesting since Sara Whitman and other “Lifestyle Reporters” are still going to benefit from asshole customers taking Sara Whitman’s article at face value.

I’ve worked for the Bux for a very, very long time, and back when I started in a mid sized cafe we had a 45 minute close with three partners, the pre closer leaving literally at close. Now I work in a similar sized store and we have a two floor for the last four hours of the night and 30 minutes to close. Of course we used to be able to stay open a little later for people, we weren’t rushing around in a panic with the threat of write ups over our heads if we don’t clock out on time.
Starbucks can’t expect us to live the same values we did in 2006 when they give us less than half the labor we used to have.
Illustrious_Ad_864335 points1y ago
Yo people need to stop posting their custom drinks and Starbucks hacks and “little known rules”. Like I’m not making a drink for you even if you state this rule if my bars are all closed and clean and we have locked everything up- you’re not special enough for me to have to set everything back up and open everything up and then clean everything again and put it away. I don’t think they realize it makes our job harder and more annoying. Like I’m sure if someone did that stuff at their job they wouldn’t like it either. People need to be more considerate of their baristas. We’re humans with things to do and places to go after our shift is over. Just because it’s “fast food” doesn’t mean we have to be treated like subhumans. Sorry rant over.
melodiic_ [OP]4 points1y ago
period!
sheep_heavenly15 points1y ago
What kind of closing can you even get done in those 10 minutes??? So dumb, no store I've worked at has ever done that. If we blazed through open we'll unlock a few early but that's it...
I can only imagine the conversation if they DID try to enforce it. "Yeah I know you're understaffed and the closes are suffering as a result, but can you do it ten minutes faster so we can disregard our posted hours? Kthxxxxxx"
imlysscining13 points1y ago
I once had a lady come in 30 minutes after close (tarbucks) and i said, “Sorry, we’re closed!” And she goes, “Ugh, it said you were open until 10!!!” Me: “No, that’s how long Target itself is open. We close at 9 everyday except Sunday.” Her: “uGH! But it says you’re open!!! Can’t I just get a chai latte?!” Me: “No, my machines are cleaned, my registers are off, and I’m closed. It’s 9:30.” Her: “UGH! I shOuLd aT LeAST gEt a fREe DrINk bEcaUsE oF tHIs!!!!” Me: “sorry, we’re closed. We open at 8 AM tomorrow. We don’t serve anyone past close.” She walked away in a huge huff. It was so infuriating. People just think they can have whatever, whenever.
rudebii13 points1y ago
We were so tight on labor and I was so pressured to get closers clocked out asap there was no way in hell we would have doors unlocked the second we got the closing time.
leopardsocks12 points1y ago
Oooh not at my store! We literally need every single second before open to prep??? And we lock the doors right at closing and anyone in line gets walked to the door after getting their order to avoid people trying to sneak in when we are “officially” closed.

Edited this morning to remove Sara Whitman’s name from the article.
ashley092711 points1y ago
My store now has a rule that we have only 30 minutes to finish our closing duties and we HAVE TO clock out. We will get in trouble for going over those 30 minutes after close. I really hope customers don’t read this and try to order past close. It’s literally impossible.
Greennooblet8 points1y ago
I really think the you have to be finished in 30mins or else is bullshit, because on one hand they want you out the door on time, but on the other hand they want you to service customers to the last freaking minute. What if you next extra time to prep for the morning, or clean something to food safe standers.
nicathor11 points1y ago
Bahahahaha! Hell no! We gladly turn customers away the moment the clock strike 5!
Kimmikkokat2 points1y ago
You're only open until 5?? Are you a standalone store?
ShannyES10 points1y ago
As a closer my headset is off at 10:00:00. Period. And my ass is walking up to lock the cafe door. Because I’ve already given cafe a friendly and considerate ten minute warning that we’re closing. I have scheduled off time just like anyone else does during the day. My time is no different or less valuable than a mid shift worker. 🤷🏼♀️ you hear that corporate? 🗣
ckt11389 points1y ago
My DM has actually told us that we don't have to honor the 10 minute rule. I personally subscribe to a policy that I will not take any orders with less than 50 seconds left on the clock before close.
naxiai9 points1y ago
Little known rule aka ✨breaking into the store✨
melodiic_ [OP]3 points1y ago
no one tell tiktok about this hack 🤭
Business_Custard70568 points1y ago
The end of the article is hurting me
"Several Starbucks baristas have claimed their store has done away with this rule. ...Furthermore, Moore said you should expect to get your coffee served with a smile. 'The employee handbook, called 'The Green Apron,' talks about connecting, discovering and responding, smiling… as a way to bond with customers,' he noted."
Like it didn't even matter what we said omg
ItzBoogieMan8 points1y ago
Dumbest fuckin rule I’ve ever heard of. If you want the store to open 10 minutes early then change the stores official hours to that. Starbucks corporate can lick my ass.
MiaLba4 points1y ago
I don’t even work at Sb but they can lick my ass too lol fuck that. I worked retail for many years and when 9pm came we were closed and tough luck if u wanted to shop, I’m not letting you. I don’t give a shit how mad they got.
DianaSilverthorn7 points1y ago
Fuck you lifestyle reporter
melodiic_ [OP]6 points1y ago
yes, i have been a partner for 3 years. yes, i know this Was a real policy when i started with the company. no, i will never enforce it on any shift i ever run, these tabloids shouldn't be promoting this to customers
Assiqtaq6 points1y ago
Yeah I saw that too. So grateful to work in a fakebucks. When I was in a corporate store we used to have a pack of people who would get to the door just at closing time and beg their way in because they "just had a couple of drinks" and were liars every time until the manager started closing 4 minutes or so early.
LZARDKING6 points1y ago
Oh fuck off
melodiic_ [OP]5 points1y ago
???
LZARDKING15 points1y ago
To the writer of this article not you
Druid_of_Twilight4 points1y ago
This must be why people are shocked when I ask them to leave as they walk in at close 🙄
star_pants3 points1y ago
Hahaha no. I remember the old "rule" and I refused it then and still do now
Vlnvln20213 points1y ago
I love how he’s a “former corporate” something-or-other…
jazzysoranio2 points1y ago
Yeah, good luck with that. Just try showing up ten minutes after close and the doors are locked and see what happens. Spoiler alert, even if we unlock the doors for you, which we are not gonna do for safety reasons, we can’t help you if all the machines have been turned off and the parts have been sent to the back for cleaning and all the hoppers have been emptied and the registers have been unassigned and the safe has been opened.
somewheredaydreaming2 points1y ago
This is actually a policy, yes that no one follows but one non the less. The reasoning is all over the place though. . . It's literally just for statistics... It helps to see if the store would benefit from adjusted hours. If the store gets bombarded with customers within the 10-minute windows then they use that data to adjust. It's not a posted rule though for customers to abuse. . . Sad that. Nothing is sacred anymore. Lmao. Definitely only something OG managers know and rarely follow. I unfortunately had such a manager at one point 🥲 ahhh the days
