union pros and cons? advice please.(self.starbucksbaristas)

i'm really proud of all the stores that are pushing for unionization and there are several in my district that have already voted. i'm pro union myself, but i also live in a smaller city and my store hasn't been hit by labor cuts too hard yet despite the attempts from corporate (i.e. most of my coworkers and my own hours are still at approx. 20-25 every week). while i understand stores in bigger areas/cities needing the protection and support of unions, i'm worried about a vote coming to my little southern appalachian store. does anyone have any advice on what it's like to go through the process?
Union dues are substantial, even when everything is “normal” - you still pay for them to sit on the sidelines.

I guess you missed the part where she asked what the pros & cons were? I worked for Kroger and saw $17’ish per paycheck disappear. I didn’t stay very long after that realization.

Fortunately, every union is different! I believe the Kroger unions are UCFW or something along those letters.
The Starbucks union is Workers United, and have already set their union dues: should be about $11 if you work over 25 hours that week.
I'm sorry your union didn't work out for you, but don't apply your bad experience to *all* unions lol

Let’s look at the Detroit auto workers then? Not one single union boss has been able to prevent layoffs since the 70s. Unions originally came about because of poor working conditions during the Industrial Age. Those conditions perfectly justified why you needed unions. Have any six year olds die on the job serving coffee? All I’m saying here is you really have to come up with scenarios to see what conditions must exist before they’d lay you off, so you go into this with eyes open. I suspect that the powers that be already researching coffee making automation that could eliminate positions.
