How many people have had customers in drive just trauma dump? Today I had one customer talk about her late mother. And another who told me about the chemical burn their 6 month old obtained from malpractice at her daycare. Dude all I was trying to do was talk about the cute baby… but now I know so much. How do you steer those conversations? Because my manager just kinda looked at me wide eyed while he was taking orders.

These customers are truly my favorites though. I don't feel so much like a cog in the machine when I have a heart to heart with a customer. We're all just people suffering on this tiny planet, why not show a little empathy and compassion?

This lady had a whole therapy session with me. The whole time I’m going “uh huh. Yeah” cus I have terrible hearing and didn’t hear half of what she was saying 😓

I had a guy tear up because he is terminally ill. He had an oxygen machine and he gave me a speech about the dangers of smoking (I don’t). We are next to a hospital so I’ve seen a few people coming from surgeries and things of that sort

Customer told me today that they just found out they’re dying… like, I extend my sympathy but I’m just a stranger.

I’m in school for psychology and I know for a lot of people talking with strangers is easier than talking with close ones. But it’s.. uncomfortable and draining. Because it’s consistent and there’s no way to place boundaries in. We had someone write in to our store thanking us for the kind service because they were terminally ill and find value in the experience we provided.
