Customers that Mobile Ordered to a Different Store (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Lt-Starbuck
I just wanted to know what other stores do when customers come in (DT or cafe) to pick up their mobile order only to realize they mobile ordered their items to a different store. Sometimes it turns out they actually ordered to the other location down the street but I've also had some order it to a completely different city 30+ miles away. I'm trying to search for the best way to standardize this that minimizes customers attempting to get free drinks while also being accommodating.

It's not free drinks, they paid for it. They paid Starbucks, they get a drink from Starbucks.

Right. So what's stopping them from driving down the street and picking up their actual mobile order that's there waiting for them? Two for the price of one.

Yea we have actually had someone do that before in my area involving my store and another one several minutes away. cuz both managers knew eachother and found out about it. Its pretty crazy. We also had one girl come in and say she placed a mobile order for our store and we asked to see her mobile order receipt so we can help her figure out wats going on and she tool a while to pull it up and what do ya kno....wen she did pull up the app, she never placed an order to any starbucks. But my manager at my store says that if this happens, we can only give it to em free from our store if its like an iced coffee or hot coffee or cold brew or iced tea. But my manager said otherwise, we have to charge em for it here and that they can call the other store and go get a refund from them wenever its convenient for them.

You give them the benefit of the doubt, but if it becomes a pattern, partners will recognize it and put a stop to it

We had a person call us because they accidentally mobile ordered to our store, which is on an island meanwhile they live on the mainland at least 100km away. We just gave away the food they ordered to nice people. People genuinely do this by mistake all the time so I usually give them the benefit of the doubt

Ask to see their app and then generally just make it and give it to them.

If it’s a giant order we do tell them they need to go to the correct store or contact corporate. I’m not remaking a 4+ drink and food order.

I just tell them it’s not here and that it’s the store down the block (nyc) so they can’t pull this shit.

if we have everything to make their order and it’s not too busy i’ll just tell them that if they call the other store to let them know they aren’t coming then i can make it for them

Always assume the best in others first, and then if they make a habit of doing this, take action!

If they show us their mobile order, and we see it's just at a different store, we just make it. And advise them to call the other store if it's like 30+mins away.

If it's a couple drinks and food items we just make it for them, but my store is centrally located near several wedding locations so on the weekends we get 20+item mobile orders several times a day. For those we ask they go pick it up at the correct store because it impacts our customer wait times & supply.

Our next closest store is 3 mins away so if it’s a large order we don’t make it for them

at my store we ask to see their order placed on the app before remaking it. sometimes they'll notice it's at another store and leave and go there but if not then we can remake it bc they paid for it already. we don't remake anything without seeing proof they placed the mobile tho

So at my store we didn’t have someone come in because they placed it at the wrong store, we had someone who was in another state call to try and cancel their order.

I would not give anything away, they can get a refund on their own time and reorder and pay you. Licensed store, we don't even do mobile orders but when covid shut everyone else in town down, the app did weird things and people came in trying to demand their stuff after ordering from stores a whole boat ride away. We would have made no money for our hard work during a pandemic. Not reasonable. Esp now when it's clearly failing to check location, wholly on their part.

Tell them to cancel/request a refund from the other store or online customer service; they have live chat and a phone #. And meanwhile, if they want to, they can order what's available at your store. Can't be giving whole orders away because of a customer error. Imagine if you ordered a product for pickup from any other store/restaurant/business and physically couldn't pick it up, they'd have to cancel the order to make things right, and we can't do any of that for them.

That's the only reasonable option, they can work on requesting a refund while you get paid for your store's work and product.
