Do you ever purposely spell somebody’s name wrong because you’re bored? (self.starbucksbaristas)

A few examples: Karen = K-Ron and Jessi = Gecpsy

I worked in a store by my high school and one of the coaches names was jim so I always wrote it gym 😂
Blonde-RU2-Mastrena 36 points 1y ago
Nope. I always assume someone might be offended about it so I ask them how to spell it.
Supperdudehasrabies [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I’ve gotten away with a lot, but I think it’s because I work in a chill part of town.
Every-Might-4699 25 points 1y ago
no, but I’m about to start

i had one lady be like "my name is \_\_\_\_ and spell it correctly this time" in a super rude tone. i wanted to spell her name in the worst way possible after that but i didnt want to give her reason to get a recovery card or anything like that so i just didnt write it on there.

i understand names are important to people and i too have a name that is commonly mispelled but it's really not that deep. we're not going to memorize everyone's name and we don't have the time to ask everyone how it's spelled. starbucks is a business, it's not your friend. sure it'll try to tell you otherwise but that's just so you feel better about paying $7 for a cup of coffee. that's it.

Sometimes I’ll throw an 3 in there in place of an E for good measure if the names to easy to spell wrong
Mx0rion 8 points 1y ago
the opposite, seriously. i've had multiple customers come in with unique/uncommon names and when i ask them how to spell it they tell me to Guess because they like to see what baristas come up with 😥 i had a ... courtlette? come in today and do it to me
meeeganthevegan 8 points 1y ago
We literally don't have time to be bored. We're drowning in mobile orders and things to do any given moment
Puddle_Duck88 6 points 1y ago
This. Sometimes I have a second to ask for spelling but most of the time I skip the name completely because they won’t give it to me the first time I ask
Supperdudehasrabies [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I hope things get easier for you.

martinifather 6 points 1y ago
I spell Jeff as Geoff for the laughs
Logical-Doubt-6021 6 points 1y ago
yeah lol
OneRoseDark 5 points 1y ago
No. Because names are important to people and I know I get a little sad whenever my name is spelled wrong. I go out of my way to make sure I'm spelling people's names correctly and I've had many people thank me for doing so.

As someone who chose my name with purpose and intent, I know being addressed correctly has significant power in making someone's day better or worse. I've never understood people who don't ascribe importance to names.

I get where you’re coming from!

However, my government name is a basic white girl name that is NEVER spelt right 😩 & the name I go by is rarely spelt right. So.. I guess that’s my villain origin story as to why I do it to others 🤷🏻‍♀️
croissantboyy 4 points 1y ago
no but if there's multiple ways to spell a name i'll almost always spell it the way i prefer. like i'd spell Kaitlyn over caitlyn katelyn kaitlin katelin catelyn etc or i'll spell it Elisabeth over elizabeth. Meghan instead of megan or meagan. john instead of jon. kasey instead of kacey or kacy. sera instead of sarah or sara and so on

although for some reason if i get a mark i'll usually ask "is that mark with a k or a c" once someone said "actually with a q" so now i'll ask if it's a k, c, or q lol
dayahorne 4 points 1y ago
I had a Karen two weeks ago and she was rude as hell, she was like my name is Jodi J. O. D. I. And I spelled it Jody. Because why not?
poopylilbutt 2 points 1y ago
I thought her name was Karen
dayahorne 1 points 1y ago
Lol no she was being one

I spell the names wrong if they are “odd” meaning like teens giving fake names and theyrrr not even names there odd things to say aloud so I mispell then so the person on bar doesn’t have to uncomfortable with saying they. And if I am on bar and there’s a inappropriate or uncomfortable name to call out I mispronounce it
darling2 8 points 1y ago
When people have inappropriate names on their accounts (it’s rare but I hate it) I don’t hand out their drink. I set it off to the side so they’re forced to come up and ask for their order. “Hi there, are you missing something? Oh, what was the name on that?” “…Uh, Balls…” 😀 Lmao
iamnotabarbie 2 points 1y ago
I did that they never came to get their drink I did it 2x actually and the first person pointed and said that was the name and drink and the 2nd never showed up (Mobile ordered it)
Foreign_Service3102 2 points 1y ago
There's a lady who had the name "nurse ratchet" and everytime she'd have a different fictional character to call her by.
darling2 1 points 1y ago
That’s funny! Funnier than Balls. Less freaky than Bodybag— that one feels like a threat lmfao that guy actually freaks me out
estrellamontse 3 points 1y ago
all. the. damn. time. i honestly really try to push it to the absolute most i can
Supperdudehasrabies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
LOVE THE ENERGY!!!
iambriwiggles 3 points 1y ago
I don’t miss spell it like that, but I like to make their names .. spicy 👩🏻‍🍳
😂😂😂

Like: Emily - Emmalee or Emilee, Jordan - Jordyn, Amy - Aimee, Carly - Carleigh, Nicholas - Nikolas

I’ve never had a complaint directly. I’ve heard whispers of “they spelt my name wrong”. And I had one girl say “awe! I love the way they spelt my name”
CommitteeJazzlike185 2 points 1y ago
one time i got a pedro and i wrote “pedo”=fart in spanish
littlekatie3 2 points 1y ago
Yup! Or when I’m at the end of my shift
reclusivegiraffe 2 points 1y ago
we had someone say her name was “princess” and my coworker accidentally typed in “priness”. he left it that way.
NontrivialZeros 2 points 1y ago
No, but I nearly sent Shay in as “Shat” with my manager standing over me.

Caught it at the last second. I’ll never know if the POS would have accepted it, but he and I tried our best to not to burst out laughing in front of Shay lol
Intelligent-Ad1273 2 points 1y ago
No bc it makes it harder for handoff. They don’t have time to figure out that gheofffe is Jeff and then the customer may not know that their name has been called. Also, for the love of god stop putting adskjeblp in place of a name
The_tired_barista 2 points 1y ago
If we get mobiles and are slow enough, we’ll horribly mispronounce names when we call their drinks out.
0x52and1x52 2 points 1y ago
Yes lol
kennsnaps 2 points 1y ago
I do, starting now
Supperdudehasrabies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Quick tip, if it’s a name like Bob you can just spell it backwards letters. That usually gets a laugh out of everybody.
croissantboyy 3 points 1y ago
once i couldn't hear the name someone gave me after having them repeat it so i asked them to spell it and they gave me a confused look and said "b o b" i wanted to die
Supperdudehasrabies [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Same 😭
