Recipe advice for an Americano at home? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SadContribution4478
I just moved and there is YET to be a starbucks close to home. So Im DYING. Can anyone help me replicate an americano at home? I know "google it" is the easy option but i dont have time or energy for trial and error. I have a basic french press im willing to invest a few bucks in something better if i need it. But is there a secret? Whats the right ratio of coffee to water? Or the right milk? Or creamer? Temperature? Give me all the details please and thank u!!! 😊

Americanos are made with espresso shots, so you’ll need an espresso machine. 1 to 2 ratio. 1 shot 2 equal parts hot water. Then whatever sugar/milk you want to dress it up with.

Another option is to brew espresso roast either at normal ratios which would give you the taste of an americano but the full body of a brewed coffee or brew it at a high potency ratio(using enough grounds for a full cup but brewing a 1/4 of a cup) then adding water for the espresso taste but thinness of the added water

you could also use an espresso roast in a moka pot😋

you’ll need an espresso machine, your preferred blend of beans ground fine, and patience! it’s a learning process and that’s okay. here’re our cup sizes to shot ratio: short, 1 shot, 8oz- tall, 2 shots, 12oz- grande, 3 shots, 16oz- venti hot, 4 shots, 20oz. for the sake of ease a shot is ~roughly 1 ounce but it’s useful to have a scale at home so you can really dial in the weight of your shot. our machines are automatic so we don’t weight them. so however many shots you choose, milk you add, subtract that from the oz you’re trying to get to. there’s also r/barista, i see people asking about at-home tips and tricks there all the time so i bet it’s worth following and utilizing also!

An Americano is just to make espresso more like a brewed cup of coffee (literally watering it down), so using the french press appropriately and spending a little more on the coffee you purchase and making sure it’s fresh and stored properly will yield great coffee at home. Other option is a pour over, which if used with a paper filter won’t have the fine sediment or as much of the coffee oils as the press leaves behind. Fresh coffee, filtered water, the right grind and ratio for your preference. Store it like wine (no light/heat/moisture).

Like the other comments said, espresso is steam pressurized through really finely ground coffee, so you’re not going to get the same result through a different brewing method.

Like the other comments have pointed out an Americano requires espresso or espresso-adjacent coffee. Since getting an espresso machine probabky is a bit unnecessary something like a Moka pot or even an aero press would get the job done nicely.

I second the aero press, it's cheap and you can easily approximate an Americano by using more grounds to water in the initial press and then adding hot water after

i third the Aeropress it’s ridiculously affordable and easy to use

I like to do americano-style coffee with my moka pot at home -moka pots brew more espresso-like coffee (& you can pick up a moka pot for like 20 bucks so it’s a lot cheaper then an espresso machine). You have to play around with grind settings to get the best cup but once you get the hang of it you can get pretty close to an americano
