Store manager complaining about availability (Rant) (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by HiberLupus
My store manager sent out a message to the whole store earlier this week about getting new availabilities from everyone to 'meet business needs'. They specifies that they needs 'availabilities' from everyone and not 'preferences' and that they will deny your availability if it doesn't 'meet business needs'. They also goes on to mention that more hours are up for grabs for people who have more open availabilities. The whole things ends with a veiled threat that more people will need to be hired if the availabilities aren't enough.

First off, how the hell are you going to deny someone's availabilities? If someone says they can only work those days and those times who are you to say that's not ok? They want comments on the updates to say why you can't work day/times but that's none of their damn business! Beyond that how are there more hours up for grabs? I am available all day every day but Saturday and for the past 3 weeks have gotten 17 hours and the average across the store being about 20. Mind you I'm not a green bean, I'm closing in on 2y and just transferred from one of the top stores in the market to this one so I'm not being snubbed for my abilities.

Idk, this manager I've not had the greatest opinion of since when they are there I honestly don't even notice. They do nothing to help or interact with the baristas unlike my last store. Every time I notice they're at the store I mention that "I had no clue you were in today" Because they just sit on their laptop in the lobby or the computer in the back. I know admin time is important but this store does 1/4th the business of my last one and my SM over there was right next to me on bar for every peak. I've not seen this one even touch machine.

I was just hired on at as a server somewhere else and while I was thinking/hoping to work both I'm not sure that's going to happen anymore. I'm going to put in my new availability which wouldn't effect the hours I'm already being given and if any questions are raised I'll probably just quit then and there. I'm a firm believer of working out your last 2 weeks but this store and manager may finally have broken that for me.

This ended up being twice as long as I intended but thank you to anyone who reads it. If you've got any advice feel free to leave it in the comments. Over all I've enjoyed my time with the Siren but it may be drawing to an end.

Isn’t this the whole point of asking people their availability on the application lol

Sounds really dumb

Exactly! All of these people were hired for what they have listed. I've spoken to 2 others and their schedule hasn't changed nor the hours they're available since being hired.

I mean, I'm available M-F, open to 2. My SM new that when he interviewed me, knew that when he hired me and since he needed an opener, was thrilled. He's never asked me for weekends or nights because, well golly, that's not my availability. This isn't rocket science.

Imagine that! Someone who accepts the hours given and works with them. Truly your SM is already better than mine. Funnily enough that's pretty much exactly the hours I just submitted so we'll see what is said.

My SM is pretty great, no lie.
