Y’all I got a question, every time I call out the shift lead always says to post about it in the group chat to find coverage, and then I am told to find coverage. Is this using my sick time or not? Isn’t it supposed to be someone else’s job to find coverage for us when we call out? I couldn’t find coverage for my whole shift so now I have to come in with a migraine and low key diarrhea to finish off my last few hours, but idk this feels hella sus

I am an opener at my store and one day I started feeling this terrible terrible pain in my stomach, so bad it made me tear up. I had the worst anxiety telling my sm who was there that morning about it (I’m a ssv and have barley called out ever) but I knew theyd be upset with me if I went home. but there was no way I could’ve made it through the day so I ended up telling them that I needed to go and they had me try and find coverage 😐 keep in mind not only am I in extreme pain but now I’m crying and panicking because it’s 6am and no one was going to answer (I was right). I ended up going to the ER and my mom took me because I couldn’t even get myself to drive🥲 anyway I do not think it’s okay to have someone find coverage if they are sick or experiencing a family emergency. You are more important than how fast someone gets their coffee. Being a ssv myself, if a partner calls out or has to leave early due to being sick, family emergency or even dealing with bad mental health for the day (which I know way too much about) I always always take it upon myself to find coverage for them, even if it happens frequently because in reality, you never know what someone is going through and I think it’s important as partners to be there for each other. Again, I’d much rather struggle to keep up with drinks/food then have someone else struggle to make it through the day. That’s just my opinion.

I have vistibular migraines that affect my depth perception and even after taking my meds (the prevention ones and the “stop a migraine” ones) I still have trouble telling how far things are so I’m a mess on bar and I burned myself on the oven today. I get so dizzy I can’t even walk to my kitchen, let alone stand and do anything right. I was still dizzy today and I was forgetting recipes and made so many drinks wrong 😑. Like I have it written down officially as a disability and my manager knows how hard it is for me sometimes. I faint too (not very often but still) and I’m terrified I will faint while steaming extra hot milk and have full body scaring from it. The worse part is when I came in to finish my shift we had plenty of people even a few extras yet I felt so guilty for something I can’t control. I wish Howard will fix this.

I hate that anyone is guilt tripped for going home when they don’t feel good. It sucks that this is so common and people have to put up with it so they can barely make it by with the little money companies pay them. We do not make enough to put the company before ourselves (honestly no amount of money is enough) I’m sorry that you’re experiencing that. No one should.

To my knowledge, partners are responsible for finding their own coverage, except when they're sick. If a partner is sick, it is up to the store manager (or store's point of contact, if SM is unavailable).
As a SSV, it usually gets put onto us to find the coverage though. 🤷♀️

If you are calling out for a reason like, a forgotten personal commitments, school etc, and it was your fault that you didn't adjust your availability for you are required to find coverage or be treated as a no show.
If you are sick or it is a FMLA related issue then you have no obligation to find coverage, that is on the SM.

okay working with any stomach issues is no bueno bc it could be food borne illness. you are actually not allowed to work if you have diarrhea or vomiting or jaundice and if any of those occur at work you are supposed to go home right away. as for the coverage, you are not required to find your own when calling in sick OR using protected sick time (for your illness, your spouse’s, or your child’s, or a drs appt, etc). if someone tells you to find coverage i would politely and clearly remind them that you are either actively sick, using sick time, or both, and remind them (again, politely) that the partner handbook states you do not need to find your own coverage when you are sick or using protected sick time

If you call out sick, the manager or SSV on duty is responsible for finding coverage. Otherwise, you're supposed to find coverage. But a lot of SSVs automatically tell whoever is calling out to find coverage no matter what, so feel free to remind them :)

No one wants to work an understaffed shift. while it’s not your responsibility to find coverage if you’re legitimately sick (and you definitely shouldn’t be asked to come in if it’s respiratory or food-borne illness whether it gets covered or not), if you’re well enough to reach out to some people it’s always appreciated. SMs are constantly reaching out for coverage to the point where it falls on deaf ears. It means more coming from the partner who needs coverage in my opinion and may be more likely to get covered.

Yeah you have to find your own coverage.

Nope! If you are calling out sick that is on the store, not you.
