“If you don’t feel you’re being paid enough then quit.” (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by skieslarr
today i had an unfortunate conversation with my sm where i vocalized how tired and worn out i was that i am not being paid a living wage or making livable hours. for context i live in PA (republican state) that is entirely anti union.
i’m worn out with labor cuts. i work with barely 2-3 other people during peak at one of the busiest cafes (non-drivethru) in the district. we work with the same amount of people regardless of trucks arrival, regardless of when my sm has meetings and conference calls where he can’t be on the floor, regardless of how busy our day is. i’m TIRED. i’m EXHAUSTED. my labor is supposed to meet those of at minimum two people and i can’t even be paid a living wage.
today when i brought this to my sm and explained i don’t blame him but i’m frustrated he got angry at me. he told me to quit if i didn’t think i was being paid enough, that he’s seen enough people come and go, and that i just need to hold tight until july for pay raises. he is also very anti union. i love my job, i really do love my customers, and i’m good at what i do. i’m worn out. i want my labor to be actually valued, i want to be able to afford to live with my fiancé. i want to not live paycheck to paycheck. i want to not be scared that this time of year every year i will have no money or be unable to afford my rent. i just had a partner quit because he couldn’t afford housing and had to move into a shelter.
i’m TIRED. we’re all tired. corporate doesn’t care.

I literally had this exact same conversation with my manager about 3 years ago and decided the siren wasn’t worth my time if they couldn’t pay me what I’m worth. I applied at plenty of different places and nabbed a job as a teller at a bank. I’ve now been promoted twice and am making more than double what I was making and I have a much better schedule (Banker hours rock).

I am putting in my 2 week notice on Monday for this exact reason. Starbucks is fast food, there is no way around it. At the end of the day, there is no education required to make a drink, clean the bathroom, clean the drains, the oven , the lobby , the ice machine etc. The point being, Starbucks will not pay a cent more then they absolutely have to.

We are having labor cuts to make quarter numbers look better for investors. If management can figure out how to run the store with just robots, they will absolutely do it.

I wanna start by saying I’m sorry you were met with anger. But at the end of the day is loving your job payin the bills. I have to ask myself this every day. 80% of my customers are amazing and are what keep me coming back.

I used to work for Panera making 9 bucks per hour as a teenager and wanted more. So i picked up a wine book and basic cookimg book. Learned a few wines basic terms. Got hired at a mid level resteraunt and became a waiter. 1k a week was easy. I only worked 5 days at night and one brunch. Why don't you go work at a decent high volume resteruant. I used to make your paycheck in a few days.
