help??? trainer questions (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sweetmiilkk
hi so i have been a trainer since about october. i love it! my favorite part of my job is training. lately my manager has been having me train two people at a time, as well as giving me less than 20 hours of training time with my trainees. i consider myself really good at training, but this feels so impossible. i’m exhausted, and i’m worried my trainees can feel my stress as i try to squeeze in all of the things we need to cover in these short shifts. i’ve trained two people at once several times now and every time i become incredibly frustrated because it’s just far too many people on the floor, and on top of it, i can’t ever meet the needs of both trainees. one trainee might move faster or require less practice than another and it sucks for the both of them. my manager also has me on the schedule to train someone in 12 hours next weekend. i guess his availability is weekends only but then i should be training him for two consecutive weekends instead of being expected to make a miracle happen and somehow train the entirety of barista basics in two shifts. does anyone else deal with this?

As someone who was trained by one person who had two trainers, I can offer exactly one suggestion. My trainer had one of us do computer work / modules while the other worked with her for practical experience on the floor. We switched every hour. Once I finished all the modules, my "off" hour was spent practicing something. (e.g. they gave me the extra hot bar and i took as many stickers from the main bar as i could handle, or they gave me a second POS so i could ring up some customers.) One-on-one time and independent work really helped make sure that we got a balance of learning new stuff with practicing the stuff we'd already learned. and everyone else on the floor was more than happy to coach the independent trainee on POS or bar.

this is a dream! unfortunately, both my trainees had already completed their online modules before we started training on the floor. maybe in the future i can try to map it out like this, that one on one time is super important to me

Seconding this. This is the standard training plan at my store even if there's only 1 new partner. We have them do a module then practice it real time before the next module.

With multiple trainees, it allows you to cater to their individual learning styles to have them alternate who's doing modules and getting more one-on-one training with you.
